When the farmers markets are closed, this is where we go for local and also some bulk foods. Locavore is more than a store, it's an important nonprofit organization making it possible for local farmers, ranchers, honeybee outfits to reach us customers. Big freezers full of lamb, beef, other meats from local ranches. Prices have gotten so high we can't afford local meat so often anymore, when we can it's great to have Locavore to stop by. Good selection of local-made gift items and food items. Pickles, soaps, farmers market types of things. Small selection of produce, typical high prices for local, nice to have it available. Customer service and friendliness of staff is hit-or-miss. Some people might be volunteers? They seem untrained or like they don't understand what customer service is about. My wife has a disability and was surprised by how dismissive they were when she needed help. That got me mad but she says they followed up well, once she complained, she's happy now so I am too. Nice to have a place for high quality bulk organic foods like nuts, quinoa, oils, good stuff from Hummingbird over in Eugene. However the prices aren't always great. Sometimes we pay twice as much compared to a similar item over at Natural Grocers. Unfortunately at Natural Grocers they don't have Oregon-local and they don't have real bulk foods either. They call it bulk but it is prepackaged. So, Locavore is the only place I know of in Central Oregon with this level of high quality bulk foods. read more

Locavore is where I get 95% of my food in Bend. This grocery store is like an always on farmers market featuring tons of local ranchers, producers, and makers. What does this mean? One-stop shopping with a conscience. I was so impressed by the staff and the selection of food and wares from local farmers and merchants. They do a great job of picking some of the best products in the area and putting them all under one roof. While the goal is for locals (and visitors, I suppose) to do all their grocery shopping here, it is a bit of a challenge. Currently their hours are limited (Wed - Sat from 12:00 - 6:00p) and the amenities (like parking) are minimal. This non-profit even plans to give shoppers a discount that bike or walk to the store. It is pretty close to downtown, but I only spotted it because of the hand painted sign at the corner of Olney and 1st Street. I noticed that they offer on-line ordering, so I suppose you can also place your order before you start your trip and pick up your groceries when you hit town. A list of products is on the website (http://centraloregonlocavore.com/products.aspx). They also had very specific information in the store about the different farms and suppliers. The market is divided into sections and it has a great homespun, whimsical quality. For example, they've repurposed a M&M machine to hold their beans, oats and rice. Only a partially successful experiment because not all of the grains fit well through the slots. The back of the store is filled with refrigerators with various meats and products from local farms. So not just a vegetarian market, although they are definitely going for the environmentally conscious consumer. The front room has housewares, cleaning and beauty products and herbal remedies. This store seems to fit in well with the fiercely local spirit of Bend. A couple CSAs in the area, also make their deliveries here, so you can pick up your weekly delivery and do a little more shopping as well. And they offer classes on a variety of topics as well. A fun new discovery for me in the area, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue to evolve. read more

This business should not be in the business to serve the public. The employees are rude and unreasonable. In my case, I ordered something online and it got delivered to Locavore for pick up. I did not get to the store within one day of the first phone call. They called again and said if I don't pick it up by the next day it would be donated! Really? My order was not perishable. So I sent my husband there to pick it up and he also said the women were rude even without knowledge of my previous experience. They finally came with the package and said they found it in recycling. Don't bother patronizing this business if you need customer service. read more

This shop's mission targets something very important to me and that's the concept of shopping local. A store made up primarily of vendors from Central Oregon. An effort bring sustainability to our community, farmers and artisans. A generous selection if local meats. Beef, lamb, pork and then a rather extensive selection of other meats like bison, buffalo, ostrich, etc. the meat is all in freezers, staff can help you find what you're looking for. Fresh eggs, fresh eggs, fresh eggs. Can't be beat. Nice seasonal selection of veggies including garlic, shallots and potatoes. I purchased a 5lb. bag of local frozen blueberries, they were awesome and I've been back twice for more. Huge tea selection, lots of dried goods, granola from Sparrow, coffee from Backporch, coconut oil products, etc. Huge bath and body inventory. Hand knit goods. I can't do all my shopping here, but what I do buy here is of the highest quality. read more

Not everything sold is grown in Oregon (or even the US) but it's nice to have a store with just local things in one place. I imagine for meat eaters it's a great find as probably 1/3 of the store is dedicated to that. It has a good selection of basics (grains, beans, flours, vegetables, spices, condiments, baking) for being as small as it is. Reminds of of health food stores pre-whole foods markets read more

I did an azure drop order and had it delivered to locavore (which I've done a couple times before without issue) and the employee made my husband buy a locavore membership or he wasn't allowed to pick it up. I looked on azure and it says there's no drop fee to pick up the order. I wouldn't have made The azure order in the first place if I knew I was going to have to pay as much as my order for a locavore membership to even pick it up. read more

Interesting selection of local and organic products. Prices are surprisingly high - even in comparison to other options such as Whole Foods or Natural Grocers. Most noticeable attribute is their poor orientation toward customer service. We have experienced abrupt and dismissive behavior from employees who acted like we shouldn't be shopping there if we didn't know where to find what we were looking for. It's unfortunate - they could easily present themselves differently with just a small amount of effort and training. read more

This was the best source of local produce when we visited in October the week after the farmers market stopped. I would love to be there more in high season. They had very good cherry tomatoes and salad greens. Also some frozen huckleberries. read more

Gotta say at first glance this place was amazing, however I bought some frozen bacon and assumed that because of the atmosphere, name and general hippiness of the place I could buy food here without having to worry about food additives. WRONG!! Got home and looked at the bacon ingredients.....which contained less than 2% propylene glycol. If you are unaware, propylene glycol is a petroleum derivative and added as antifreeze. Other applications include flavored teas and salad dressings (among other things). My aim is not to blacklist this place but to bring about awareness that if you do (and should) go here don't be stupid like me and assume anything - read the labels as not to make the same $10 mistake I did. read more

Great place to find Raw Honey from local hives.. Cool shop with a lot of options for local products.. I did not like the line/slow check out or the sales pitch to become a member ( which only had a 5 % discount for a minimum $75 fee) .. Everything else fit well with its name and likely will become and increasingly popular store in Bend !! read more

I believe this store was founded on a good idea. They offer local produce and meats for sale, and are a quick stop on your way home. I even have friends that supply salad greens and meat to them. It always made me feel good to be supporting local. However, they had someone working the counter who was really rude when I came to pick up my bulk Azure order. He was upset that I did not have a current membership, and even said "how am I going to make any money off this." He was short, rude, and didn't really seam to fit the non-profit platform they advertise. I don't think I will be shopping at Locavore anymore. It's not all bad, I will just have to buy more local from the farmers direct. Bend also has several other Azure drops in town to choose from. I will just send my next order to another drop location, and avoid Locavore all together. Just wanted to share this bad experience, and I really hope no one else has to go through this. read more

I was really excited when I walked into this place but was quickly disappointed by the customer service I received. I had some questions about a certain product and the staff member was really quick & short with his answers. He then walks away as soon as he is done talking, not giving me a chance to ask anything else. I approached him again to ask a couple of things about the origin and source of the product and he told me he didn't have any information and to go to the website myself. I was there to buy bulk product for my business and was hoping to establish a relationship with a local store. Even though this store had the exact product I needed, I walked away without buying anything and decided to order it online instead. Under no circumstances should a customer ever feel rushed or like an inconvenience for the staff, specially when there is only 1 other customer in the entire store who is not asking for any assistance. It makes me sad to not be able to support a local business but bad customer service is unacceptable. read more
