I Just love to visit other towns Farmers Markets when I have the opportunity. Since we were spending a week in Bend, Oregon I was happy that I would get to attend their weekly market. Their market runs from May - October and is located in downtown Bend in Brooks Alley. It was not as big as I had hoped but there was still an ample amount of fruits, veggies, meats, baked goods, flowers, pies, and other vendors showing their products. What I was so excited about was how fresh the produce was. Being a desert dweller, so much of our produce has to travel in from other places and it tends to get so dry. The strawberries here were just so juicy! The red peppers were gorgeous. After we walked around for a bit, It was close to lunch to I ordered a wood fired pizza. Fresh out of the oven, it was just what we needed. There are tables where you can eat or you can walk down to Drake Park and enjoy a great view of the Deschutes River while you dine. All the vendors were friendly and helpful and when I return I will attend again. read more

Great place to pick up local food and food products. Nothing better than fresh from the farm produce. We even got some local made whiskeys. I grew up with an Italian plum tree in my backyard and was happy to get a little taste of a childhood memory. read more

The market itself is a bit lackluster. I was disappointed to see a lack of variety of stands. I ended up getting strawberries (delicious but tiny and only lasted 1 day till I had to throw them out) and some veggies. I wish I could write a separate review of Sunsweet Flower Garden though! This cute father-daughter stand made my wedding bouquet in about 7 minutes and they did the most FANTASTIC job. I told her the colors I'd like and asked her to just get creative with the arrangement and I am just beyond thrilled with the vibrancy of the flowers and the reasonable price as well. There was a crowd around this tent just watching this duo create beautiful bouquets on the spot. Highly Highly recommend! read more

I was dazzled by the location, but disappointed by the price and limited selection. I love to visit farmers markets and this one operates twice a week at two different locations in Bend during the summer months. I went to the Wednesday afternoon market in Mirror Pond Park in downtown overlooking the river. There were long lines on a hot afternoon and a small, but nice selection of locally grown berries and vegetables. They had live music and a couple of booths where you could purchase bakery and food items and drinks ($4 lemonade). Just a couple non-food vendors selling jewelry and artwork. Now those that are accustomed to Portland's farmers market will consider this small and quaint, but the prices seemed high - no bargains here. As Jen F. noted, lots of signs saying "no dogs". I'm going to echo the lukewarm reviews of other Yelpers re Bend's downtown based Wednesday Farmers Market. As we wait on the market to open this season, we might hope that the organizers are thinking about how to do this better. My hubby and I are Farmers Market junkies, going out of our way to visit them when we travel or sometimes adjusting our travel plans to attend one and sometimes even taking a short trip for the main purpose of attending a Farmers Market. (As in trips we make to Portland for that reason at times.) In our life before Bend, when we lived in cities that had Farmers Markets we were regular shoppers at them. Based on all of that experience, Bend's is the only one that comes to mind as being held on inaccessible surfacing...that is dense, deep or uneven grass that does not allow market carts or strollers (to say nothing of wheelchairs or walkers) to easily use the market. One might even argue that this is an ADA violation. Regardless, it is just darned awkward for all users. It is worth taking a look at Jen F's 2007 comments on layout that I pull forward here: "The layout is OK, but I really don't think they make good use of the space. Several very narrow spaces were very clogged with shoppers, or were blocked by long lines of people waiting to pay. I just didn't feel like there was a natural path through the market..." Exactly. Plus add in inaccessible surfacing and this a tough place to navigate. It seems logical that people aren't going to shop where things are made difficult for them to do that. The solution here would be to either move the booths to face forward along the paver walking paths of Drake Park or move the market to another location where there is more ample parking and paved pathways to provide equal access for everyone. The Old Mill area is one such example, so is the old Mt. Batchelor Park and Ride lot off of Colorado. Or even move the market onto a downtown cross street like other cities do. There are lots of solutions here and seemingly little leadership to try to employ one of them. The same group that runs the downtown market also runs the Friday market at the SCMC location and has the same deep grass, uneven surfacing problems there - and also grassy knoll locations for some vendor booths to add to the equal access barriers. Very sad to say that when we want to attend an easily accessible, well stocked Farmer's Market we drive to Portland or Beaverton. And forunately for Bend, beginning this market season there is the independently run Northwest Crossing Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings that does provide equal access, although it is much smaller for options. The people running the Bend Farmers Markets are capable of doing better and should. Universally accessible markets benefit all vendors and shoppers. Until they make good access possible, we just can't get jazzed about spending our dollars at the Bend Farmers Markets. read more

Ok, they've resolved the ADA problems and moved the farmers market up to Brooks Alley. So great that there is better access, I'm totally good with that. It's all downhill from there. A significant reduction in the number of vendors, or at least it seems that way. Plus, no more food. (Sweet Saigon does offer a couple of items from their back deck, spring rolls and pork buns) Okay, it's a farmer's market, I get that it isn't supposed to necessarily be a food venue, but that taco stand was pretty darn good. The venue is not great in my opinion. Granted it seems that every Wednesday we are having record temperatures, but it's so dang hot there. There is no relief from the sun. I see the vendors sweltering in the heat, trying to put on a brave face, but they've also been vocal about it. Nice selection of produce vendors and several meat vendors. read more

Next week is the last week until spring. We come here every week for veggies and fruit. You never know what you will find week to week but it's always fresh and interesting. We have tried the Newport fish man but have not tried the two meat guys yet. There are also lots of baked goods and pasta as well as desert items to be had. read more

During the summer I try really hard to buy local, fresh produce. There are several great grocery stores with nice produce sections, but I wanted to give the local farmers market a try. Drake Park is a great location, adjacent to downtown Bend. We were planning our first summer bbq with guests, so I headed downtown with my list. It wasn't really what I expected. What comes to your mind when you picture a farmers market? I expected the majority of booths to be laden with fresh (if not local) produce, with a few other items (crafts, breads, flowers) tossed in. I am used to seeing the workers visiting with the patrons, offering samples of their products. What I found? A couple vegie stands (with lots of lettuce) and a couple fruit stands (with lots of berries). But mostly, there were flowers, bakeries, ranches (including a smoker), and local restaurants. Huh? It was more like a Saturday Market, if anything. The layout is OK, but I really don't think they make good use of the space. Several very narrow spaces were very clogged with shoppers, or were blocked by long lines of people waiting to pay. I just didn't feel like there was a natural path through the market, and we had to make a couple of passes to ensure that we really saw everything (and I am still not sure we DID see everything!). There was a "no dogs allowed" sign (can they do that in a public park?) but I saw several people with their dogs. I managed to find a couple of things on my list, and it was extremely expensive. I ended up purchasing most of my produce at a local grocery store. read more

I love farmers markets. I love being outside, seeing fresh, local fare. I can honestly say, though, that this market was pretty average. I love that some of the local bakeries and coffee roasters come and bring some goodies, but aside from that this farmers market is pretty lackluster. Nothing to write home about. The produce is pretty expensive, and I think I'd probably just end up buying my fruits and veggies at the grocery store. The only highlight for me was the presence of Sparrow Bakery, Village Bakery, and the little cheese stand. read more

Why is this market only open June-September? Even the Boise Idaho market is open April 1- October 30. How do Bend farmers make a living and how does the public use the farmers market as a viable produce source? Farmers know how to use season extension techniques no matter the climate. Hoop houses work wonders. In my humble opinion the market manager needs to work with the city to make this something more than a summer tourist attraction. Most good towns have great farmers markets these days. They're important! read more

3.5/ 5 stars the market is a bit overpriced with some vegetables and at some vendors. i have only visited in summer when lots of great veg. are ripe and the berries are insane right now. there are 2 different local coffee roasters, 2 bakers and a plethora of veggie and berry farms also for sale is free range eggs and a good mix of game meat-elk and the like as well as rabbit turkey etc. local kombucha, more egg vendors and tumalo falls lavender sets up shop here there is not a huge selection of warm food options, but usually i prefer to cook or eat my way through my slow food purchases rather than buy a sloppy burrito. while visiting i would not hesitate to stop by the market. its a great way to support the local economy . USE the market, or LOSE it read more

I find the prices to be a bit steep. Not a market I'd visit every week. It's early in the season, so selection is small.

Great place for fresh vegetables fruit and bread parking was available but get there early. Down side is they can't sell anything until 3 pm. But that's ok it gave us time to look for the items we wanted read more

Way over priced. I want to support local, eat local, and mostly organic. But at these prices, I couldn't feed my family. Hot, tiny, skinny paved area makes it like swimming upstream, jockeying for a position to look at goods and then waving money at people to pay for your stuff (and they are hot and annoyed also). I love farmer's markets but this one is not worth it. So I go to the one at Northwest Crossing, but, there aren't as many fruit/veggie vendors there so I lose out. read more

I love the farmers market and feel so lucky to have access to such beautiful fruit and vegetables. I would give it a 5 star if that had left it's location on the grass. They have moved it to the asphalt which becomes very hot in the summer wilting the fruit and vegetables as well as the people. I do feel the prices are a little high. I go every week anyway. read more
