The best Gyros in the city. I also like the soup and spinach pies. Dinka's are good for desert. It's a full size Greek decor family style resturant. Service is fine and friendly. There is street parking and a parking Garage Accross the street. Pay the box. It might be possible to find street parking blocks away. It is located on Central Ave near Belmont Ave

Well this is an update from eating at Central gyros. It is with big disappointment because more in the service because it took them more than 20 minutes to serve my entrees especially a spinach pie they used to be a lot faster. As for the braised leg of lamb it was a big disappointment. I used to get a lot more raised like a lamb and a lot more potatoes with rice they really shortened the portions and yet they want more in regards to the cost of their food in the menu including their gyros. It is now almost $18 for chicken or traditional gyros. With how the service was slow I don't think I would come back next to how over price it is. Ambience was the same. I think they changed owners last I came a year a half ago

Been going here for 40 years and still amazing! We used to live near by and came to central gyros all the time. Far away now, but worth the trip! I had a beer, the delicious hot and tasty lemon soup and the amazing tender, flavorful gyros. If I was with a group I would have had the Saganaki for sure. Their flaming cheese and fresh chewy crust bread was always the best. I am just so glad i got gyro, because I almost didn't. Recently I have had several gyros at other greek places and the dry, overcooked or greasy meat had turned me off of them. Central gyros are how a gyros should taste! Try their food! Only criticism is that they need to make their sign visible! The trees have completely hidden their cool street sign. They would really get more people if the sign was not buried behind the two trees. Call the city.

Our server has been working there for 20+ years and is super sweet and awesome at her job! My gf and I always go back and forth about who has better gyros (central gyros or gyros express). Well, I finally got to see what she is raving about. Saganaki is phenomenal! Best I have ever tasted, melts in your mouth. On top of their bread was perfection. Gyros, were delicious (but gyros express is better). Was a bit disappointed with the portion size. Normally, when we get a platter with an extra pita, we can stuff our gyros so they can barely close and still have more to pick at, this wasn't the case....we had to order and extra side of meat. So what really makes it a platter? Not sure. The restaurant itself has a great Greek feeling and decor.

I've been coming to Central Gyros ever since I was a little kid - how have I not reviewed this place yet?!?! Central Gyros is by far my favorite Greek restaurant. This restaurant is incredibly humble, down-to-earth, spacious, and extremely delicious. They have a die hard staff that has been for years. The service here is spectacular - they're so hard working and they know their menu off the back of their hands. I also found out they have new owners now during my most recent visit a few days ago; I've always loved the staff here! The food is where the gold's at. This Greek food is GOOOOOD. I highly recommend their chicken shish kabob plate that comes with rice, potatoes, and a soup. Their avgolemono soup is the best in the area. I squeeze extra lemon in it to make it more sour. Their gyros are to die for and their Greek salad is light and refreshing. Their fries are very thick and potatoey, too - my family absolutely loves the fries. The complimentary seeded bread is endless and yummy. They also have the best Greek potatoes I've ever had at any Greek place. It's all reasonably priced, as well. Overall, if you're looking for a delicious, down-to-earth spot for some Greek food, you've found it!

Central Gyros seems to be super popular and a favorite for many. I had to check this place out, because one of my favorite foods is gyros. I did a carry-out, in which I ordered the Gyro sandwich - I did ask for this well-done, extra onions, with the tzaziki and the tomatoes. They definitely delivered on the onions, which I super appreciated. However, the pita bread was kind of stale - should have been buttered up and super fluffy. The gyro meat was a little hard and chewy, as if they were already cooked in advanced and barely warmed up; I was expecting more of the 'fried' that they describe on the menu, which would have been more crispy and more greasy... Definitely on the saltier end, which I didn't mind. The portion is great, and you could easily make two pita sandwiches out of the meat. The restaurant itself had a funny odor; not sure if there was carpeting inside or not, but there was some type of a musty smell that I was not a fan of. Staff were super friendly and welcoming! There's a free city parking garage across the street, which is super convenient - just be careful crossing Central, as it's a super busy street. +chewy gyro meat +friendly service! +free city garage across the street

A real neighborhood spot with authentic Greek food. In between fast casual and upscale dining in a dining room setting. The decor is reminiscent of old style Greek murals that adorn the walls. It is bright and airy and the tables are a decent distance apart so you're not on top of each other. The restrooms and super clean which is a big plus with me. I always get an idea of how owners and management feels about their establishment by the sense of the restrooms and quality of napkins. Here, with get a big ups! The server was excellent! I wish i remember his name as I always make it a point to ask names of those who so graciously choose to serve my meal. It's not an easy job and these folks don't get nearly enough kudos. I super nice Hispanic guy who knew his menu well and suggested choices from the menu. Their offerings are 100% Greek and authentic in every way. You really can't go wrong here on what you order. There is something for everyone vegetarian and carnivore alike. Greek food being generally vegetarian friendly offers excellent non meat selections. I try different things here though today went with the gyros plate. A plate full of of quality gyros meat on a bed of fresh cut white onion and sliced tomatoes. Pita bread on the side with their Tzatziki sauce makes for an excellent filling lunch. There is the option between rice or very good steak fries with you plate. I've had the rice and it's excellent however this was a fry day. The fries are thick long and not at all greasy. If I had to give a 5 star on any particular item it would be the Avgolemonos soup. A Greek style egg drop should with rice in a thin lemon broth with an excellent flavor. This is my absolute favorite and of soups and I know soup. Central Gyros hands down has the absolute best Avgolemonos in the city. This alone with their legit Greek salad would be an excellent meal anytime a day. This soup will warm you and fill your taste buds with joy. So try some soon. An excellent choice to dine at lunch or dinner.

    Gyros and fries. So good!!

The moment I stepped inside, I felt like I had been transported to a small Greek taverna. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and our server was incredibly friendly and welcoming. One of the highlights for me was being able to order and converse in Greek, it made the experience feel that much more authentic and special. Of course, I couldn't decide on just one dish, so I had to order a little bit of everything. Why not? The saganaki was absolutely delicious and is definitely a must-try. The avgolemono was decent and comforting, though it wasn't quite as memorable for me. The pastitsio was a bit of a mix. The flavor was delicious and packed with that classic Greek comfort-food goodness, but unfortunately, the béchamel was overcooked and had become too firm. Overall, between the friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, and flavorful food, I had a very good experience at Greek Islands. There are still plenty of classic dishes I'd like to try, so I wouldn't hesitate to come back the next time I'm in Chicago.

As soon as we walk inside we see how beautiful and modern the interior looks. They had a lot of seating available and we got a nice table by the window with a view We wanted to eat light before the tour so we shared a bunch of small plates. We ordered the mushroom escargot, lemon Caesar, crispy potatoes, a couple orders of hummus and some chicken kebabs. That mushroom escargot was one of my favorite things I ate during the entire Chicago trip. The mushrooms were creamy and rich. It tasted umami, bright from the lemon, slightly spicy from the Calabrian breadcrumbs, and paired perfectly with some warm pita bread on the side. The hummus was smooth and well seasoned. The lemon caesar was fresh and fairly standard. The crispy potatoes were perfectly textured and were soft and pillowy on the inside. As long as they sat on the table they never lost their crisp. The chicken kebabs were tenderly, juicy and garlicky. We were all putting together our perfect bite combinations with the pita bread. Everything we ordered I would actually order again. Though may want to try a different salad next time since the Caesar was pretty simple. Regardless, still no real complaints with the food Our server was charismatic and funny. He had a great attitude and entertained us throughout the meal. Everything came out promptly as well so we made it out and could take our time walking to the riverboats. Lucky for our friends the tour said they'd be docked for a few minutes after our scheduled start time to set everything up. As 3 minutes after our start time we see group 2 sprinting up from a couple blocks away Overall Ema was consistent, flavorful and reliable. Not a bad price point either for what you get. While it was shown on the lunch menu on their website, the Prawns Saganaki was actually not on the lunch menu. Luckily, the kitchen has prepared it (for dinner) so I was able to try it. In total 4 pc of big shrimp, served with tomato sauce, crumbled feta and cherry tomatoes. The feta was so finely crumbled that it could easily "melt" in the sauce. The cherry tomatoes added more juiciness to it. Overall great, and definitely paired well with the pita. What made me disappointed, if not annoyed, was the check-in. I waited for nearly 6 min until someone finally noticed me. The staff said she would come "just a minute". At that time a woman (white) went into the restaurant and sat at the bar. Then she started to greet her, and discussed the menu with her, and even took the order! Looked like she completely forgot my presence. Possibly some discrimination/racism idk. i would have left if the restaurant did not charge a no-show fee for reservation. The decor is beautiful throughout and the large glass windows overlooking the park lovely. Our waitress was great and very attentive throughout the evening. The Pikilia was a great bang for your buck and the tzatziki and tirokafteri were favorites! I had the chicken souvlaki which was flavorful and others enjoyed the shrimp souvlaki, broccolini, greek fries, salmon and lamb shank! The brussels sprouts were incredible with the pomegranate giving them such a bright twist! The only other note was that there were a number of large events the night we were there so it was quite loud on the first floor and a bit hard to hear each other at the table. All part of the price to pay to go to a busy, in demand spot though but just something to think about for your party's level of comfort with noise!
