The search continues for a good seafood restaurant in or around Jacksonville. Our first time here and our last time here. This place needs a good cleaning. It would be a good idea to remind staff to clean in between patrons, as well. When someone is taken to the table and they have to wait because the hostess/waitress is flinging food off the booth and the table it's a bad look. That was our first clue it wasn't going to go well. This is not a made fresh, cooked restaurant. Box food, frozen, canned. Mac and cheese was Kraft...omg! I deplore powdered orange fake soggy pasta. Then it is served after sitting on a warmer, so it's dried and crispy on top...mmmm yummy, not! The coleslaw is in a plastic tub GFS that was used to supply KFC years ago, I'm talking 90's. 1 of the few things I ate. A bit of nostalgia. LOL. Clam strips are frozen, very similar to Adelphia Seafood. Honestly, not worth the price. A note, throwing cayenne on shrimp does not equal hot & spicy. It's just shrimp with cayenne. 8 gator bites at an OUTRAGEOUS COST and bland, no seasoning. We won't be back because the cost does not justify what you get. I cannot say enough good things about Cedar River. Me and my friends drove all the way from Amelia Island 45 minutes just to tear this up. We all got an assortment of food, including the trio platter, and the mates platter. This is the only place in Florida that doesn't have bleached shrimp. The crunch of the fried fish takes you back to the days of you were a kid. The deviled crab is something out of a five star restaurant and don't get me started on the scallops. My friend Casey and Jack both opted for the platters as well as Jason and let me tell you they were not disappointed. Sean went with a Poboy that would pair well on a hamburger bun. The restaurant didn't look very inviting on the inside. We had to wait to be seated and it wasn't crowded. The waitress did a good job. The wait time for the food was about 20 minutes. It came out hot and correct. The crab crake was not tasty. They didn't look presentable. They tasted like batter, I couldn't taste any crab meat. The fish and shrimp tasted ok. They were bland, no seasoning. I probably will not visit again. read more

Good old fashioned seafood restaurant where the majority of the food is fried and tastes delicious. Daily lunch and dinner specials. Good prices and decent sized portions. Service is good. Restaurant is a bit worn and could really use a refresh, but the food was really good. Several of us eating together. Couple of us got the lunch special of flounder and shrimp with hush puppies and two sides. Coleslaw and french fries were good. Fish and shrimp were tasty. Other companion got the salmon which she enjoyed with a variety of southern veggies which she enjoyed. Even at 2:30 for a late lunch the place was still a bit busy with a couple groups. Once upon a time, Cedar River had locations all around the Jacksonville area and they were all great. This is one of the last and probably should have closed when they were at the top of their game. The place is very dated, paneling walls, dingy floors and uncomfortable booths. The food is OK at best. If you get the shrimp, be sure to get it fried, the others are very small. I think the fish is flounder, OK but thin and there are so many better options this close to the coast in Florida. Sides are hit or miss, green beans=nasty, slaw=bland and baked potatoes are often undercooked. I will say you get a pile of food but it is all just OK. Beware if you have allergies of any kind. My wife has an allergy that will stop her breathing, we asked for it to be separated ( I was going to eat it) and the cook put it on the plate, when the server told him about it again, he just pushed it on to another plate. Thank goodness she saw him and made him fix it. read more

We so enjoyed our lunch at this restaurant. A place where you'll find mostly locals which is always a god sign. Jess was our server and was just great. I am a little picky and she was spot on and my food came out just as I asked for it! The food came out really quickly as well. Got the blackened flounder fillet on a lunch special, comes with two sides. Fantastic deal and delicious. Pleasant place. Lots of families dining there. Service was pleasant and efficient. They were even patient with my silly questions about the vinegar pepper sauce. read more

We were 8 hours into a long road trip and saw the parking lot was full at 2PM (always a good sign!) so stopped in. Hubby and I both ordered lunch platters with fried seafood - everything was fried just right - not too oily or overdone. Collard greens, okra and coleslaw were all really good. Server was excellent. Went for lunch they have good lunch specials during ring the week. Plenty of food for the price. I had a combo with broiled grouper and fried shrimp. Was cooked well, shrimp did not have a heavy batter coating(was good). Cole slaw is somewhat like KFCs. And had good hush puppies. We will go back. read more

I have mixed feelings about Cedar River. My family loves this place and we come here a lot with large groups. The staff is always accommodating and friendly. I know at least one of the waitresses has worked there since I was a kid. We love the small town, casual vibe here. But, the food has gone down hill. The last several times I've eaten here I've felt sicker and sicker after we leave. I think the oil they use is bad or something. I barely touched my entree after eating only a few bites of the appetizers. I hate to stop coming here since I've more or less been a life time customer, but it's not worth feeling sick. read more

I give it zero stars. Stopped there after taking our grandson to the airport. Having had dinners at the Fernandina Beach location we though this would be at least as good. Well Wish we kept going. Worse service and the food ever. Awful experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. Inside needs a good cleaning and makeover. Service was terrible. But the biggest disappointment was the food. My Combo platter of shrimp and scallops (which is $2.99 extra) was awful. 6 shrimp and 4 very greasy scallops, warm coleslaw, gumbo which looked and tasted days old. Wife's crab cakes all filler and probably frozen boxed and tasted like reheated, coleslaw warm, baked potato hard and musty tasting. On top of all that, not worth half the price we paid for our dinners. But the worse was yet to come. That night, we both felt sick and nauseous. How this restaurant get even more than 2 stars is disturbing. I suggest you see this place, just keep going you'll save yourself money, aggravation and health. read more

First, our waitress was great! Crystal did a great job taking care of us. However, it's obvious the owner is not putting money back in the business. The entire building could use a makeover. Urinals with plastic bags halfway taped over them, seats with tape patching holes. Air conditioner was barely operable and floor fans placed about trying to create a breeze. Cedar River Northside is near my home. Each time I drive by, my auto wants to stop in. My old boss loves shrimp. When he retired we took him to Cedar River to celebrate. We told the sweet and attractive waitress Jim wanted shrimp, LOTS OF SHRIMP! Somehow, the nearly 30 of us were served all about the same time. Here came Jim's shrimp, carried on a large platter piled high(!) with all the "fixens!" We placed bets on whether "skinny Jimmy" could eat it all. In addition to shrimp were delicious hush puppies, large home fries, baked beans, and a small (fresh) tossed salad, plus a large sweet tea. I had similar fixings with flounder. A few had catfish, haddock, or trout. Also available is steak. Quite often, prior to 4pm, you can get a platter of flounder and shrimp, plus side items for only $10.99. Cedar river is flexible with its menu items. The servers are friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is a little "seaside homey" but when your meal is served, you forget about that. read more

I almost didn't stop here due to the reviews and rating. As I looked into them, the reviews were from years ago. Today I ordered a take out flounder lunch and shrimp lunch. When I got home with the order I noticed immediately that the shrimp was extremely salty. I called the store to see what could be done. After speaking with Lexi she informed me that the staff do not salt anything and she had no resolution to offer. She gave excuse after excuse....that maybe it was the "breader" if that's how it came than that's how it came and there was nothing she could do! It is rarely that I patronize an establishment and have a problem with the food and there isn't some resolution offered but this is a first and a definite last when it comes to Cedar River. If I'm not appreciated as a patron than I will carry my business elsewhere and I will suggest to all I know to do the same. read more

This used to be a great place to go on a Sunday & enjoy seafood. Me & my husband went on our way home & we were looking forward to it. Nope....food was so bad....oysters burnt...green beans bland...salad sad....everything else was terrible including the service. Cooks leering at waitresses from the doorway. I was seriously thinking of Gordon Ramsey 24 hours restaurant show. I hardly touched my food & wish I didn't due to diarrhea the next morning. Oh & the prices had gone up. This place is along our travel route from Ga to FL so have stopped in many times. Although the place is a bit dated you get large portions at a good price. The fried seafood is their speciality and does not disappoint. I had the fried oyster plate and my husband had the combo flounder and clams. Both were fried to perfection with just the right amount of breading. The waitress was courteous and checked on us frequently. Our total price with drinks was under 30.00.
