My brother took his duelly's transmission (5spd manual) there sept '22. 3 times they had the trans out before they finally got it right. The last time the truck was there they hit something with the truck (I'm guessing a rack) and wrinkled the front fender and broke a headlight. When confronted about the damage they denied doing it and would not fess up to any part of the damage. We know they had to be aware they did it because we could tell the headlight had been replaced and they left a chunk of the glass in the bed. Honestly I'm surprised they even replaced the headlight( old style halogen). Given a choice, I'd go somewhere else. read more

In mid January my son was driving back to school. Our 2015 Chevy Tahoe blew its transmission and Cedar Rapids Transmissions helped us out of a tough spot on a very cold couple of days. Took my vehicle in to get looked at. Didn't hear back and when I called to get an update they were already in the process of replacing the transmission ($2000)! They were unapologetic and rude. Got the vehicle home and still had the same problem (was it even the transmission)? Craig and Scott, who I dealt with "are no longer with the company" and so I get some guy who just started and 'didnt know as he just moved here. So then I get Randy. Never dealt with anyone so rude. He asked if I thought I was gonna get it fixed for $20 or free. When I tried to explain the history he said he didn't want to hear it. Wouldn't even take my info. I asked for his superior and he said "good luck thats the owner and they are never here". Appauling service throughout!!! read more

I took my car that was having some minor transmission issues over and was told that there would be a $0.00 charge to look at the car. Also got told that before he would do anything he would call me for approval.I received a voicemail that said the total was $214.00 so I called to find out that they had changed the transmission fluid without my consent. Then when I went to go get my car the service guy was basically treating me as I am a waste of time, He didn't care that he did work to my car that he didn't have consent to do. I refused to pay the full amount, I offered to cover the cost of the fluid and nothing more. I will NEVER bring another vehicle here. read more

My wife had transmission problems while shopping in Coralville. I called Fountain Transmission and got no answer. Called 3-4 more times over the next hour when someone finally answered at 1:15 PM. He said they close from noon to 1:00 each day. Never heard of an answering machine? Or a website? Or posting your hours online? It's free people and it's just common courtesy. Apparently they don't need any more business as he said they couldn't look at our car for a week and half. I then called CR Transmission and although they were busy, said they would look at it when we got it in. The towing company got the car there around 3:30 and by 4:30 they phoned with the diagnosis. The diagnosis was spot on, their rates are fair and the service was fast and courteous. Highly recommend. read more

I was driving from California to Massachusetts this past summer when my car broke down in Iowa. Luckily, I grew up in the Cedar Rapids area and was planning to visit family there anyway. The car was a 1999 Jeep that wouldn't switch to higher gears. I took advantage of the fact that I could still drive it (provided the speed was less than 30mph) to get a few estimates and opinions from local shops. The local branch of the AAMCO chain did a free computer diagnostic. The guy there said that the problem was probably the transfer case, but they were booked up for the entire week and couldn't start working on it for at least 6 days. Next stop was Affordable Transmission Service (ATS) downtown. The guys there didn't hook it up to the computer at all. They were convinced it required a new transmission at a price of about $1200. When we suggested that it could be the transfer case, they laughed. We decided to get another opinion, and they tried to stop us in the parking lot with an offer to put in a used transmission for only $1000. The hard sell didn't make it seem like they had my best interest in mind. Next, I went to Cedar Rapids Transmissions to see which diagnosis they would make. The guys did a diagnostic and said it was a problem with the transfer case not the transmission. They couldn't be sure how severe it was until they took it apart. The mechanic noticed the California license plates and asked about our plans. We told them our story and said we needed to get the car fixed as quickly as possible. Although they seemed to be very busy, they made our car a priority. They finished the work in two days since they had all the parts on hand. The total cost was about $750, and it has run well ever since. Unlike the team at ATS, Cedar Rapids Transmissions cares about fixing the real problem as quickly as possible and at a fair price. They even showed us the part that was broken and explained how it works. Since I don't know a lot about cars, they could have easily convinced me to pay for a new transmission, but it's clear that they have high ethical standards. That's probably what has kept them in business despite suffering from the floods of 2008. read more

We had our vehicle repaired with a rebuilt tranny and torque converter. The minute we drove off the lot we had problems. Leaking and shuttering of the vehicle at certain speeds. Took the vehicle back. Was told it was repaired. The leak was the shuttering was not. Called them and Scott said well it should be ok and there really wasn't any more they could see wrong with it. Now the torque converter went totally out. Of course the warranty is over. I did take the vehicle back to them. Was told the converter was out and it could be $650-1100 to repair. They already got $1,200 the first time. Other tranny shops told me the converter had issues after they put it in. It should have been fixed correctly the first time we complained and the second time when it was still doing this I asked to have Scott call me, he never did. Gave him one week to call. Nothing... So the following week I called and was told they lost my number. Yeah ok I am in the phone book. Ridiculous excuse. Talked with Scott..his reply seemed to be some what helpful and said let me make some calls. What calls I do not know. But now 2 weeks have passed and no return call again. I do not trust these guys. They sent us out the door with problems. And never fully repaired the shuttering. Other transmission shops have stated that they should have done the right thing and pulled the whole tranny if necessary to make the repair. Would I recommend them? No. They don't care if they get return business or not I guess. And they allowed us to drive a vehicle that was not correctly repaired. read more
