We stumbled upon Cedar Crest and Bernice the cow in August. We made a special trip back today. WORTH THE DRIVE!!! ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE CALORIES!! I got lemon cheesecake this time - EXCELLENT!!! Just the right amount of lemon and cheesecake bits. My husband always gets vanilla. He says Cedar Crest has the best vanilla anywhere. When in Wisconsin, look for Cedar Crest ice cream at local grocery stores. If you're anywhere close to Manitowoc, go see Bernice! We wish we lived closer. We'd be regulars!!! You can't drive past this ice cream shop with a huge cow out front calling your name and not stop for a treat. The shop's interior is decently sized to hold the longer lines on nice days. No matter the length of the line this ice cream is worth the wait. The scoops are generous, I ordered a kiddie and had plenty to enjoy. Kind of a "must-do" while you staying in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. You are in the dairy capital of the United States so how can you skip stopping when you see a giant cow? Prices are very reasonable, at the time that we went it was $4.50 for two large scoops of ice cream. A special Sunday would run you 5 to 6 bucks, which is very comparable to like a Dairy Queen. I had Scotcheroo, a butterscotch ice cream base with peanut butter swirl and chocolate covered crispies, a flavor I haven't been able to find at the grocery store before. Scotcheroo: A few years ago, I was browsing the ice cream section when the description of this ice cream caught my eye. At the time, in my ignorance I did not know Scotcheroos are also a type of dessert and not just this flavor of ice cream. So, for those of you who are also behind on the times like I once was, a scotcheroo is a dessert bar made with chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, and Rice Krispies. Apparently the recipe was originally printed on Rice Krispies boxes in the mid-1960s and they remain a popular treat in the Midwest (which explains why I've eaten them before, but did not know they were "officially" called Scotcheroos).With that out of the way, Cedar Crest's ice cream is comprised of butterscotch ice cream, milk chocolate covered crisped rice, and a peanut butter swirl. I was completely wowed by this flavor back then and I still am today! The peanut butter swirl does an excellent job of cutting the super sweet butterscotch ice cream and the milk chocolate crisped rice continue to be a real game changer. Every time we are in Manitowoc, we stop at the Big Cow (Cedar Crest if you're looking it up on a map). If you haven't had their ice cream, you haven't had ice cream. Try the butter pecan, or the moose tracks. Go for strawberry or vanilla. Mint chocolate person? Right there with you. You literally cannot go wrong here. If you want a reasonable serving, get the kids cup. A single is actually a double and they just get bigger from there: and yes, they can do multiple flavors in a single gel if you can't decide. And they'll give tastes to help you narrow it down. Sundaes are amazing but most people just get the ice cream because it's that good. If you're from out of town, prepare to be very pleased at the pieces. If you live there, ya, it's gone up, and so? There are a few tables if you want to sit inside, a few more tables outside. Anyways, the Cedar Crest ice cream shop has many, many flavors to choose from, freshly made right there in the factory. They offer kiddie scoops, one scoop, or two scoops. You have your choice of a dish, a cake cone, or a waffle cone. They offer a slew of toppings, specialty sundaes, root beer floats, and other goodies. We came here on a Saturday. We arrived a few minutes before they opened. They opened at 1 pm. We could review the special flavors on the board. Once they opened the door, I knew exactly what I wanted. I ordered the bourbon southern pecan. This is a special flavor for April. Immediately, I could taste the bourbon. This is a sweet, nutty ice cream with a kick. I enjoyed every bite. I will have to stop in next month to see what new flavor shows up. read more

Wow, what a great find while traveling through the area! This shop had probably 30+ flavors to pick, some were very unusual. I got pineapple upside down cake and campfire s'more. Both were delicious. My wife is a peanut butter fiend! She tried two different ones both with peanut butter and both were yummy. The prices are fabulous. $4.50 for two very nice scoops! The shop was clean as was the outside seating area. We sat by the huge cow at a concrete table. The staff was friendly and pretty quick to serve us. read more

To simple Manitowoc folks, this place is referred to as "The Big Cow". The ice cream is pretty average, but it is truly the culture of cedar crest that makes this place special! If you are driving past, you will see the Big Cow dressed up from time to time (once it was an alien to celebrate Sputnik-fest). The other impressive aspect about The Big Cow is the number of flavors that there are to choose from on the menu. Likewise, the prices are quite reasonable. Even though the prices have gone up recently it is still a good deal and its the best ice cream around. Kids love the "Big Cow" outside and everyone loves the huge selection of flavors! My personal favorites are Black Cherry, Malted Milk and Pistachio. So many others to chose from. Located not too far from the Car Ferry Dock.... Don't leave town with out getting a cone! Limited hours in the winter months. They do sell quarts to go for those who don't want to pig out at one of the tables! read more

I was disappointed maybe our expectations were too high or maybe it was too close to the end of the season but we could've had the exact experience at a gas station that sells this brand of ice cream. Some of the girls working were nice but some were cranky. The cow out front is big but you can see it from the road, stopping isn't necessary. There was not a lot of flavor options. The ice cream is good but better enjoyed buying a pint at the store and eating it at home. read more

It's always cool to drive by a dairy and see an ice cream parlor attached to one end. This ice cream parlor also has a 50'+ cow in front of it. In a land (Wisconsin) of great ice cream there's stood out as above average. The service was friendly and they were generous with their toppings unlike some other places (Unfortunately some ice cream places think it's okay to merely drizzle hot fudge over a sundae). Three of us got ice cream for around $10 so their pricing is a real plus in my book. Cedar Crest is a solid choice for ice cream treats (and it has a really big cow in front of it). read more

On August 14, 2020, I was looking forward to the yearly Cool City Classic Car Cruise and we all decided to stop at the Cedar Crest Ice Cream Shop in Manitowoc. Well, from there my experiences went in the toilet. I have always loved Cedar Crest Ice Cream, and buy it repeatedly at both the grocery stores and ice cream parlors. Unfortunately, that will be a thing of the past. Because of the virus precautions, we were told we had to wait in line in the blazing sun. They only let one family in at a time. Normally, at this point, I would just move on to something else in my day. But I really like their ice cream! So I sweated, and when we got to the door, we claimed medical exemption, no masks. The girl said she had to clear out the lobby before we could go in, for our protection (yeah, right). She then let us in, where we proceeded 6 feet to the three people behind the counter. All three had just watched her put me through the wringer once. But that wasn't enough, the girl at the counter started to give me the mask lecture. I cut her off, saying she just say the other girl do it, and did she think the other girl was not doing her job? She said she was just double checking, so yeah, despite the fact that she knew I just went through all that, she felt the need to harass me about all over again. I definitely lost my temper then when she proceeded to start the spiel all over again. I said that an ice cream cone was not worth going through all of that. I said I was just going to leave, and as I turned away, the young man at the counter said "Good". What happened to respect and manners? Harassment? An applauding attitude because I was leaving? I don't think those are part of the governor's mandates! So everybody wants to say that they have to right to set their policy, but let's look at what that policy and poor manners cost them. I am just one person, but I bet others got a bad taste in their mouth also. So I went on a Facebook site that is putting information out there like this. So now everybody on that site has a bad idea of Cedar Crest's reputation, but a very good impression of other companies that don't go "Nazi" on their customers. I doubt Cedar Crest will care because their real customers are the large grocery chains. But at the cost of their reputation? And while my future ice cream purchases will total at least $1600.00, I don't think they care. But those purchases won't be with Cedar Crest..... read more

The big cow is a Manitowoc icon and a popular tourist draw. As such, it is a novelty draw. This is a Cedar Crest manufacturing facility, which sells its product at the attached ice cream parlor. However, Cedar Crest is merely average ice cream. This is worth a drive-by, but continue north across the river and get your ice cream at Beerntsen's. read more
