An old-fashioned candy parlor. They are known for their chocolate candy mold creations, unique dining experience, and a creative list of Sundaes. We were welcomed with a nice greeting and given space to enjoy all the creations behind the glass case. I purchased a bar of Bernstein's almond sea salt for $5.22. I also took advantage of a scale for a penny that gave my weight and a fortune. That was fun but the scale was off by 10lbs lololol well that is my story and I am sticking to it. There was a dining room in the back I was told served soup and sandwiches. We didn't stay only bought some candy to go. The establishment felt very historic and authentic. Tight quarters can get crowded quickly but the line moved quickly so you didn't have to wait long. Nice stop for some good hard candies, and chocolates.

This is a great little old-fashioned ice cream and chocolate shop that also serves food. The ambience is quintessential, small town ice cream sundae parlor. This is where we stock up for Christmas chocolates and other treats.

Beerntsen's has been here forever! Owners have come and gone over the years, but all of them have been smart enough to keep this historic name. They have also kept the place pretty much unchanged... which is pretty cool. The show room in the front is full of chocolates and candies and the parlor in the back has old wooden booths where you can eat lunch or enjoy some old fashioned ice cream sundaes. Sure, the menu is not huge, and you can get ice cream at the chain stores cheaper, but taking a step back in time makes this place a must see in Manitowoc. So if your coming off the Car Ferry or visiting the Maritime Museum, or just busting downtown Manitowoc, add a trip to the past and enjoy a treat at Beerntsen's.

Having had chocolates from here for YEARS from my grandparents and parents, I finally decided that I needed to stop in myself! Located right in the heart of downtown Manitowoc, it was a nice little walk! Couldn't miss the entrance with their awesome neon sign! You could also smell the enticing aroma of chocolate before you even get through the front door :) I was surprised to see a fun back dining area, I had no idea! Definitely would be a fun spot to catch up with friends or bring family/kids. I picked up my favorites, chocolate covered raisins and malted milk balls! I will say that as it was my first time purchasing the items myself, I was a little surprised at the pricing, but it is high quality and homemade, so you get what you pay for! Can't wait to come back again to treat myself, and will think of Beerntsen's in a whole new way now that I've been into the shop after only ever partaking in the goods for so many years!

A true confectionary! Feels like a step back in time. All your classic sweet needs from malt floats to chocolate molded treats. We enjoyed a hot fudge sundae and chocolate cookie dough custard at one of their tables--so good! It seems everything from the recipes to the decor is as it was when it first opened in 1932. Even the kitchen had copper mixers and frosted glass light fixtures. All the sugar candies and chocolate are made with care and detail. We bought a bag of cherry candies on the wire--you won't find gems like that at most candy stores. Prices were affordable. Wouldn't mind coming back here for lunch, they serve sandwiches too. Whether driving through Manitowoc or here for a long stay, make sure you to check this place out!

This place is so cool! So many different shapes of chocolate - I'm talking pianos, dogs, pumpkins, horses - all of it. Really good homemade ice cream too. It's a cute spot!

We saw Beerntsten featured on "Around the Corner" and we're both like "what? How did we miss an old-timey candy shop in Manitowoc?" So we made it a point to stop on a recent weekend drive. Though Beerntsen is right on the main drag, it does fly under the radar - the storefront is relatively unassuming and easy to walk right by. That all changes when you walk in the door - you'll be greeted by the smell & sight of chocolatey delights and experience an intact antique interior. All the cases, woodwork and beautiful wood booths are original and impeccably maintained. The back half of the store is an ice cream parlour where you can get sundaes, phosphates, malts and other frozen treats. The Mister had a chocolate malt, and liked it but wished for a stronger malt flavor. I had a S'Mores sundae and really liked it - it was just the right mix of each ingredient. Service was friendly but a little slow. If you don't want ice cream you can get simple sandwiches and soup too. Be aware that the candy part of the store is very cramped and isn't fun to be in when there's more than a few people inside.

Mint chip and Door County cherry hot fudge sundaes. One scoop if you can believe it.

A piece of history. Get a sundae, buy some chocolate. The sundaes are huge, photo below is one scoop. Chocolate fudge sauce was just OK, lacked flavor and thickness, not up to the quality of the ice cream. They make cute molded chocolates which are very nicely done, but I would not put them in the "artisanal" category. The ambiance will take you back 100 years - really a fun experience. The staff are helpful and friendly. A great way to take a break for an hour and get the blood sugar back up!

We stumbled upon this cute place downtown and the ice cream and chocolates hit the spot. I love that they have kept the nostalgia of the original sign and location alive because that is the biggest draw to this gorgeous little establishment.

Beerntsen's located in downtown Manitowoc, is a landmark of sorts; it's unique and historical ice cream shop is the place you must stop if you're passing through. This is a great place to take out of town guests to give them a little flavor of Manitowoc past. When you enter the store you are in the chocolate area! There are always samples (full-size chocolate turtles when I visited there), and you can find a chocolate gift for any occasion. The dining area has wooden boots where you can enjoy a lunch or dinner, always followed by a unique ice cream concoction. Beerntsen's is definitely a stop you want to make.

There is a misunderstanding with the service today however once I was able to speak with the owner it was resolved amicably.

The carmelcorn popcorn is highly addictive...in a good way. Ever wanted to know the difference between gelato and ice cream, both are made here and you can try and buy both. Tables are available for enjoying your treats. Also varieties of chocolate for your chocolate fix of the day. The young lady who served us was very nice. We've had a couple of pleasant visits. Nice spot across from Lake Michigan. If you're looking to treat yourself to something really good, it would behoove you to stop by and walk in the door. 1 Share

This is an amazing find! Driving by, I see this little sign for chocolates and I have to stop in…read more I walk in and I'm greeted by one of the chocolatiers and owners, welcoming me and explaining all that is on the shelves and more importantly what is NOT on the shelves. We'll get to that later. I find Chocolate grahm crackers, rice crispies, nutter butters, Oreo's, and of course artistic pretzels to name a few. All are hand dipped and decorated beautifully, no machine could make each so perfect. I move on and find chocolate spoons for drinks, I am intrigued by the alcohol infused craft chocolate and then... I see chocolate covered key lime pie! well and others but really? Who thinks of this? Well that is not the end. Every time I stop in, I learn more and more. They offer individualized wedding offerings and other event ideas. They really care about what a consumer may want and ask every time I arrive, what it is I might like to see made on the shelf and sometimes I may get to taste test something new! I'm not going to lie, I mention, I may just like chocolate covered gummy bears. I know not so elegant but they are surprisingly pleasant :) Ok so cost for these items are reasonable and fair. Reasonable enough that I plan to organize something original for the office this holiday season. I did hear that the personalization is expanding to that....soon... you may be able to pick your pleasure and they may just make it right there while you wait! Now this is amazing. Bottom line: Amazing craft chocolates for reasonable prices. A business that really cares what YOU think and welcomes feedback to continue to elevate their creations, how? No idea. The chocolate is decadent and delicious. I will keep coming back for my favorites but also to see what is next this innovative chocolatier is doing!
