Pine River Dairy is a must-visit if you're in the area! The highlight is definitely their 50 cent Cedar Crest cones. Cheese is a bit pricey, but very fresh and tasty. Big variety for a small place. My favorite is the mozzarella cheese whips, and their cheese curds and cracker spreads are amazing as well! They have a very nice sitting area outside to enjoy your treats, like a small park. They also carry some Wisconsin souvenir-type items, local meat market Newton Meats beef and ham sticks and summer sausage, and locally made goat milk products. Their fresh cheese curds are divine and will give you the best "squeaky cheese" experience ever. Whenever I travel home and have at least 20 minutes to spare, I check out their cheese cases and have a scoop of the Cedar Crest ice cream for $0.25/scoop. You are greeted immediately as you enter. This family of employees is so knowledgeable from the types and making of cheese to how to transport it. They offer the best cheese in my opinion and offer many options for gifting. I would recommend the cheese spreads any day of the week! It was recommend that if we wanted any cheese to go to Pine River Dairy. I wasn't that excited about it because we were on vacation and this place was 10 miles away. It's in the country near nothing or so it seemed. Told my wife we should skip it and I'll buy her some Velveeta at Walmart. But Happy Wife - Happy Life... so guess where we went. First, we couldn't hardly get in the door. People kept coming out. It was crowded in there. This place is very popular. They have every cheese known to man and probably some unknown to man. My wife bought maybe 12 different kinds. The prices were really good. Better than the prices at our local cheese store where we live. Oh and because it was only around 9:0am and everyone walking out the door with ice cream? We had ice cream for breakfast. It was also very good. I learned that this place will ship cheese to you. Great little country cheese store famous for 25 cent ice cream cones and lots of varieties of cheese. For years my brother has sent us cheese from this local spot at Christmas and since I was in town for a visit, we decided to take the short drive out into the country and get some cheese. The shop is bursting with a wide variety of cheese including 2, 5 and 10-year aged cheddar, local butter, and a great collection of Green Bay Packer souvenirs to show your true Wisconsin spirit. Of special note are the 25 cent ice cream cones (one scoop) or splurge and get 2 scoops for a whopping 50 cents. These aren't huge and the day we were there in August they only had about 6 flavor to choose from, but the ice cream was fresh and tasty. Absolutely wonderful cheese and butter shop! You can often see them making giant vats of fresh butter behind the window in the door connected to the front shop. Huge selection of cheeses at great prices. Some of the cheese may not necessarily be made at the Pine River Dairy but it's repackaged with their label and sold at a very decent price. The butter is what keeps us coming back, not to mention the made daily, fresh, squeaky cheese curds. It also doesn't hurt that they sell 25 cent ice cream cones, which are actually free if you buy some cheese. Meat sticks, sausage, bacon. I could keep on going but you get the idea. The place is pretty much in the middle of no where but it's not hard to find and once you find it you'll keep coming back. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming to boot. On a hot summer day, there's nothing like getting fresh cheese curds and and ice cream cone then sitting in the park across the street from the store. read more

This place REALLY IS out here in the middle of nowhere (just under three miles from my rural farm). When you think there's no way it's out among all these farms, THERE IT IS! What a find! Pine River Dairy is an amazing place to visit. Fantastic local cheese, wonderful homemade ice cream. We stopped here as part of the Open Air Tours convertible event. All of us enjoyed an ice cream cone as part of our visit. It was so delicious! But eyeing the local cheeses and spreads was equally as delightful. If you have never been to Wisconsin, then you haven't truly had ice cream! Pine River Dairy has some of the best ice cream I have ever had, and it's only 25 CENTS A SCOOP! There are certainly better places for ice cream in the area (Scoops in Chilton and Cedar Crest in Manitowoc, off the top of my head). But Pine River Dairy isn't that far off, and is WAY cheaper! They usually have 8 (I think) flavors each day, and every day there will be something different. I usually pick up to 3 flavors and get one scoop of each. I have gotten 4 scoops before, because sometimes it is hard to narrow the choices down to just 3. Some of my favorite flavors are Blue Moon, Great Lakes Spumoni, Superman, and Zanzibar (think more chocolatey than chocolate itself). I think I have gotten those four every time it was available. Actually, the first time I had Zanzibar, it actually came in 4th place and I got three scoops that day. After leaving, I had some post-purchase remorse, wishing I had tried the Zanzibar. I guess it was meant to be, though, because as soon as I got home, I was sent back to pick up some butter. So I got some Zanzibar and it instantly became a favorite! You can get your ice cream on a cone or in a bowl. I recommend a cone for one scoop, but a bowl for two or more, because it can melt pretty quickly, especially on a hot summer day, which can get messy real fast. But it's not all about the ice cream! They have a plethora of cheeses of every kind (the sign out front says over 250 varieties). My favorite is the 10-year aged cheddar. They have fresh squeaky cheese curds (a very Wisconsin thing) every morning, and their butter is top notch. I have heard comments on their butter like, "It tastes like cream!" and "I used to think butter is butter. Then I tried butter from Pine River Dairy!" They also have a limited selection of dry sausages. They have all kinds of Wisconsin related souvenirs like the foam Cheesehead hats, and Pine River Dairy t-shirts. And they also have gift boxes for people who are visiting or looking to send something to loved ones far away. To top it all off, the best thing about Pine River Dairy (yes, even better than the ice cream) are the lovely ladies who work there. They are all fantastic, friendly, and very helpful! One negative is the small parking lot that can fill up quickly during busy times, especially during the summer. But most of the time that is not the case. And even when the parking lot is full, there is plenty of street parking available. One more recommendation: there is a small park across the street where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream. When the weather is good, it really is the best place to enjoy your ice cream while you take a few moments to sit, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. I just left Wisconsin last week. I don't know when I will be back again. But one thing I will definitely miss is Pine River Dairy! read more

My three favorite places to buy cheese are (in this order) Saxon's creamery in Cleveland, Henning's near Kiel and Pine River. They all offer outstanding cheese. I find myself leaning towards Pine River because it's the closest one to my house. I couldn't tell you how many varieties of cheese they have at Pine River, there could be a 100. They always have fresh cheese curds, those squeaky little treats that are as Wisconsin as the Green Bay Packers. But my favorites are the very sharp cheddars. 4 year old, 8 year old, 12 year old...bring it on! An added plus to going out to Pine River is the opportunity to get yourself a cheap (but tasty) ice cream cone. Fresh butter is also available. Don't forget to try their award winning cheese spreads. Best. Cheeses. Ever. Pine River is a gem hidden among miles of cornfields and cows. As an Illinois native, I have to stop here every time I'm in Manitowoc and I also had my Dad ship me packages when I was in school in NY. Some of my friends didn't even know what a cheese curd was, and let me tell you, I've never had curds more fresh than these. You can tell because they're still squeaky and wet. They have such a huge variety of cheeses, personal favorites are colby with bacon, garlic cheddar, and the smoked string cheese. I like to get something different every time. And also, stock up on some of the bricks of butter for baking, which are made and packaged onsite. Everything is very reasonably priced, too! read more

I was in Manitowoc for 4 days and came here twice. I guess you could say that I liked it. :) This store is CRAZY busy. So many people that it's actually hard to maneuver- go in knowing you will be rubbing up on some strangers. Small price to pay for all of the cheese ever. They have souvenirs if you are feeling kitschy... we got a magnet that says, "I Cheese Curds"! And they have cheeses shaped like cows and WI state and a badger, these are wrapped in wax and are perfect for gifting. We picked up a bunch of block cheese, cheese curds, spreading cheese, and summer sausage to take back to Seattle with us. The staff gave us some free ice packs to throw in our cooler bag.
