Good: the vegan cupcakes are probably the best around…read more Bad: their prices are high in comparison with GF bakeries basically in any major city, and they have an illegal "No Cash" policy (illegal under DC law. The owner should look up the law because she's way out of compliance: https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/laws/23-187), but charge a 3% fee if you pay by credit card, which you are required to. They basically give you no option to avoid paying a fee. (In response to the owner's response below: They have a sign that says NO CASH, so is a customer supposed to believe they'll accept cash IF the customer has exact change, as the owner says they will? And if they do accept that cash, then they would, in fact, have cash on hand anyway, which undercuts her claim they have no cash on hand...but they don't because they have a sign that says NO CASH. Every other business in the community doesn't blame the city for their own non-compliant policies, as the owner does, and accepts cash in the same circumstances. Plenty of places are happy to take cash and prefer it, and it is required by DC law. I was surprised to see this NO CASH sign after emailing with the owner about it *a year and a half ago.* I walked right out when I saw the sign.) They also now have a self-serve bar which invites the spread of things like norovirus. There are no sneeze guards. They make it hard for me to support them even though I really have been trying to for years.

During brunch, Tatte is always bustling with customers from the diverse diaspora of life in DC, and the staff never fail to deliver under pressure. I am so grateful

We went for a late Thursday breakfast (~9:30) and were able to find some seating but they were at 90%+ capacity. We crammed our group of four into a spot normally meant for 2-3 people. Seating is at a premium as there are people using the restaurant as a place to work out of because they serve coffee. It's a bit of an odd dynamic since people need to sit to eat and sometimes tables are occupied by laptops instead of dining patrons. The food: Lamb Meatball Shakshuka - I had the regular Shakshuka the first time visiting, since I wanted to try the original. Stewed tomatoes with eggs served with toast. I think the lamb is a nice upgrade since the meat cuts the acidity of the tomato, and there is just a lot of tomato. Strawberry & Raspberry Cheesecake Cup - this delivers exactly what I would want for a cheesecake in a cup. Cheesecake is in the middle of for texture between fluffy and very dense cheesecake. Sesame Latte - an interesting drink fusion - coffee with black sesame. I think this is fairly well balanced with it tasting a little like black sesame and a little like coffee. Pistachio and Ham & Cheese Croissants - we asked these to be heated prior to eating. I thought they were slightly crusty on the outside, inside was soft without much structure (a little flat). They were ok and I liked the Pistachio one better. Overall, a solid, clean and modern place to get a beverage or meal. They offer some unique items to make things interesting.

Irish Car Bomb: Chocolate cake perfectly balanced with the moist Jameson center. The bailey's frosting is the sweet compliment bringing out the rich chocolate. Cowboy Coffee: EXTREMELY chocolatey, with a rich dark taste. Hint of espresso goes back and forth with the Jameson. Both have perfect moist centers that taste as if they were lightly soaked in alcohol, and the cake was ACTUALLY BETTER than the frosting (only other place that accomplishes this is The Sweet Lobby). I'm not downing on the frosting, though. It is perfectly complimentary. As of right now they sell them in bars/private events/festivals. But I hope to see a store front in the future.
