Four of us jazz lovers visited Caveau de la Huchette on a recent trip to Paris hoping to hear some great music on the Left Bank. We arrived there about 10:30 on a Sunday night. Success on that score, but all too brief. Unfortunately, the venue was terrible. This place is obviously interested in collecting as many admissions fees as possible, and unconcerned about the safety of its patrons. The music area was jam packed, with standing room only, and people were literally pressed into one another to the point that it was not only impossible to move, but also difficult to breathe. . And the box office was still selling admissions! Apparently, there's no fire code here. It's super uncomfortable, but if you don't have a loved one to press your body up against, maybe this place is your cup of tea. My group left after about 15 minutes. Bottom line: great music, safety hazard, super uncomfortable and nerve-wracking. Do not recommend. read more

Caveau de la Huchette is one of those iconic spots you want to love--and there's definitely a lot to like--but our experience had a few hiccups that kept it from being a full 5 stars. We got there early to line up, but were told by someone to wait across the street, which made things a bit confusing from the start. Once inside, there wasn't much direction or signage about where to go for the stage or where the band would actually be performing. We ended up upstairs kind of waiting around without clarity. When we finally found a spot, the view was pretty obstructed. People would stop on the stairs to watch, which ended up blocking anyone behind them, and the overall setup just didn't feel as smooth or well-organized as we expected (keep in mind this venue is mainly underground). That said, the music itself was great and the energy on the dance floor made it fun once things got going. The location--right by Notre-Dame Cathedral--also adds to the experience. Not perfect, but still a memorable night. read more

Don't come here because the bartenders will "accidentally" charge you over 350 euros for two spritz. Had to go out of my way to go back to the club and they couldn't refund me there and had to email them and they didn't respond for two days and could only transfer it to an international bank. Also it's packed, sweaty, hot, and filled with American students studying abroad. Not worth it at all. I really enjoyed Paris but this ruined my experience. read more

Good music but watch out as they keep packing people in. The space should have a maximum of 150 people. When we got there at 10pm it was about 200 people. By 11 pm there was no room to move and they kept allowing more people in. Very dangerous. Be carefully if you go on a busy night. read more

Entry is 10€ for students, even foreign ones. I didn't have my student id, but I showed my moodle and got in. It wasn't very crowded on the main floor when we entered around 9/10. This was my first time drinking so I'll try to not let it color my review, but let's just say white wine isn't for me (it was very fruity). The bartender was nice and could speak English. Downstairs was where they shot Lala Land. It's MUCH more crowded downstairs, and very hot. If you're standing don't be surprised if someone dancing knocks into you and spills your drink over you. A live band plays and they were good. I liked the "special guest" they brought in towards the end of their performance, can't remember her name. Getting down to the sub level one and the toilets required going down a kinda terrible staircase; especially the one going from the -1 level to the bathroom. Both in the sense that you have to duck if you're tall and the quality of the steps. Just be careful, even if you're sober (idk how drunk people navigate those steps). If you leave, you can come back as long as you get stamped. read more

Then winded down narrow dark 500 year old stairs to the cave. It was a Monday night and they were rocking! It was several people taking shifts at performing on the "stage" tons of dancing. Incredibly unique and fun jazz bar with live music in the basement caves! I loved the atmosphere but unfortunately didn't stay long because it was incredibly crowded and hot/humid. Cover was €15 per person and drinks were pricey for a short pour (around €18 euro for vodka soda) but fun to experience at least once. read more

First of all the long wait outside was crazy to get in and then when they let everyone in, they let in what must have been an illegal amount of people in a small space with nowhere to stand or sit like sardines packed in a can. Then the music began, and the disappointment increased. Definitely subpar entertainment not worth paying for. Don't believe all of the hype. read more

Cute lively jazz bar that inspired the bar in La La Land! There is a cover charge to get in (cash or card) but if you show a student ID you can get a discounted cover. It was a really fun experience -- the best part is dancing with the locals, so don't be afraid to move your feet and don't shy away when someone wants to dance with you (they're probably not being weird, they just want to dance). It is really touristy though, so that's something to keep in mind. I heard English being spoken more than any other language and it was filled to the brim with Americans. I honestly wouldn't go back, but I'm glad I went at least once. read more

One of my most memorable nights in Paris. Arrive early, so you don't have to wait in a long line. The staff was friendly and everyone in the club was very kind and mindful of your personal space. Really disappointing! While I can appreciate the history and the significance of this place I wouldn't visit again. Firstly there is a cover to get in (16€), and the cocktails are on the more expensive side (12€). The Moscow Mule was so sour that I couldn't drink it. The real bummer was how crowded it was! The cellar downstairs where the band plays is rather small. They let in so many people which causes there to barely be any room to move or see the performers/dancers! I really think they should limit admission/the amount of people they let in at a time. The jazz band playing was actually rather good and I was bummed that we couldn't actually enjoy their set. A speakeasy-style jazz bar that welcomes all ages. The building layout itself is super interesting. The ground floor you enter from seems to be the main bar area where you order drinks. Then go down to the basement for live jazz music and dancing! The spiral staircase with the old brick walls leading to the upstairs restroom seems like a secret passageway you'd find in a castle from centuries ago. It was my last night in Paris and I was pleasantly surprised at the large crowd on a late Tuesday night (came in almost at midnight). My partner and I couldn't find seats at the beginning but people come and go pretty fast here. The ambiance is casual and there's no pressure to order drinks or anything, but there is a 13 Euro cover fee which is very reasonable to support the jazz bands that perform here. One of the best things about this place is the crowd it attracts. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and the dance floor was constantly moving. I can't say it was perfect but it was close. It's a quaint spot where you see a blend of all ages. The bartender was just a gem humorous and welcoming and could be present with the tourist. This is a diamond in a sea of tourist populated places. It was 13,000 euros to get in . Drinks were reasonable and not a minimum need to drink. Seating was limited. But the talent was priceless. It was a swing night with a young band from Norway. They were great and all the people dancing was just a nice spot to experiencing something timeless. read more

Fun and fun! After paying the cover fee to the man in the little entry booth, I had no idea what to expect descending the stairs into the "cave." What I found, was a gem! I think I got there as the actual bar/club was opening so nothing was going on ... just yet. I went downstairs and plopped myself in the perfect area for watching the little stage and the dance floor. As I sat there, more and more people started heading down, each selecting their seats carefully. Then, the band came in and the party started. They played a set with no one dance ... just yet. The next set, and the cave getting now being crowded, the place was buzzing with people dancing. Some folks looked like professionals and others were just learning. It was awesome because everyone was having a good time! One of the things I loved most about this place is that it seemed to be a mix of locals and tourists and they were all dancing together. There was a lovely range of ages as well, from 20 something's to 70 something's. So wonderful! Some of the more seasoned dancers would ask others to dance and even teach them some moves. Some people were in their own world and cutting a rug all by themselves. There was no judgement ... just ... dancing and having fun ... and it was AWESOME! I did read a review of someone saying this place was touristy and not real jazz. I also heard another American sitting in earshot say, "this isn't real jazz." Here's what I say ... "Who cares?" I have no clue if what I was hearing was legit "Jazz" or "Swing" or a mix of both. I just know it was fun and people were having a marvelous time. I also know that many of the people having a good time in there weren't tourists as well. Whatever it is, its a good time if you want it to be ... and I had a great time there! My only regret is not getting up and trying some fancy moves myself. Oh well ... next time! read more

Gotta say, amazing atmosphere. Came here around 10pm, paid cover, got a drink upstairs at this old school bar, and headed downstairs to the music. We had no idea what to expect, so we were plenty surprised when we saw that it was actually bunker! It was super packed and filled with people dancing to the music. Some of the old dudes in there can really dance. The band would switch up the styles here and there to accommodate different tastes, and all sounded great. Played some classics as well! Warning - it can be super super hot down there. We went in the summer and let's say the ice in my drinks didn't last very long. We were lucky and was able to grab a bench seat so we had a good time just people watching and listening to music. A lot of people stood for the whole time, and while doable, it's a bit less enjoyable, especially if people are walking by trying to find a spot the whole time. read more

While spending a romantic week in Paris, we wanted to hit the town and dance the night away, and we had heard that Parisian Jazz was a must music scene. we decided to head to Caveau DH and we're surprised to have our cab drop us off right in front of Notre Dame in the Latin Quarter! This is was great plus for us because we got to enjoy the night view of the cathedral. We got to Caveau around 11pm and headed into the medival style stone bar and descended into the basement which is actually an old dungeon. The place has an incredible jazz band and vocalist, who blew the doors off the place all night. This place is for dancers and we wore our shoe soles out to some of the best live jazz we have ever heard. Great bar, and unforgettable ambience. Don't miss this spot on your next trip. read more

Man, this will not be for everyone! Yes, it can get really crowded but it's a fun, good natured crowd, not the typical crush of tourists pushing to get up the The Eiffel Tower with crying children. It does have some real physical quirks. For me, it only makes the place more interesting. For one thing, it's small. How small? On YouTube, type "La La Land Caveau de la Huchette," and you'll see that beautiful scene bathed in blue, with actor Ryan Gosling's character playing in a small jazz combo. Thing is, that's not the stage you're looking at. That is, pretty much, the whole of the music club, except the caverns that project off the dancefloor with tables, the tables and benches on the side of the floor, and the bar area upstairs. That's how small. Also, there are the well worn, winding, slippery, ancient stairs you are obliged to take up and down between the bar area on the street level, and the basement where the action is. But for goodness sakes, is there anywhere else in the world where you get to do the Lindy or the nasty shake to a great jumpin' blues band like Nirek Mokar and His Boogie Messengers in a 16th century Rosicrucian cave of mystery, once dubbed, "The Cave of Terror?" My money says there isn't. For music lovers and for grotto lovers, this is your experience. It's also the oldest jazz club in Paris. Kid Ory and, later, Lionel Hampton played here. But what really blew my mind, having been a jazz fan for more than 40 years, is that folks like me were joined by a large, dedicated contingent of international 20-somethings just cutting loose and having a great time. Want to see 20-somethings stop taking selfies? Go here. For one thing, I'm guessing they're too hip to be social influencers. Also, it's too crowded to get anything out of your pocket. On another note, our group doesn't drink alcohol anymore. We've had ours, already, and probably some of yours as well. We found their "mocktails" really thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The staff were all cordial, including the bartenders. Note that they know better than to hire wait staff to try to get down those treacherous stairs and through the crowd with drink trays, so go early, get one of the tippy tables in one of the emanating cavern-like structures where you can still see the stage, or on the tables and benches off to the side, then send two of your steadiest members back up those stairs to the bar for drinks. Sounds like too much effort for you? Stay home, grandpa. There are plenty of other music-loving, adventurous folks who crave places like this, besides me. Although it has much more charm, and while centuries older, is much better preserved now than that younger, bygone, NYC music landmark ever was in its day (now gone, of course) Caveau, for me, is like the CBGBs of Swing. If you wouldn't go to the Lower East Side to hear Rock & Roll, back in the day, then you probably want to stay out of Latin Quarter jazz caves at night, today. Maybe late hours at the Louvre or a rooibos tea at a café is more your speed. I don't know what their alcohol costs, but, as Ray Charles said, "Don't sit there mumblin', talkin' trash. You wanna have a ball? You gotta go out and spend some cash! ...And let the good times rollll..." Laissez le bon temps rouler! read more

Not at all what one would expect from what has been said as the second city for jazz clubs, following New York. I adore jazz and was very excited to check out some local spots. The band equated to a cheap cover band, and the crowd was entirely made up of tourists. Yes. I am a tourist myself. But if you are hoping to find a spot frequented by locals, this is not it. Great place to experience a true Paris institution. People of all ages dance swing dance in the basement. There are people who dance with their partners and people who dance with strangers. You signal that you want to dance by catching someone's eyes and smiling. It's a great place to people watch young and old just having a good time. You'll have to bring your own drink if you want alcohol in the basement because there's no bar. It was a 15 Euro cover on Friday night with live music. read more

YEAAH...!!! THIS...IS...PARIS...!!! THIS PLACE WAS SO COOL...!!! The bar is dark and sinister in a 50s-60s film noir kind of way and then you go downstairs, and--BANG!--you are in the middle of a jumpin', swirlin', bumpin' jazz fest. People are spinnin', shakin', and going wild! It's entertaining just to sit on the side and watch (if you can find room because it gets packed). And if you are a dancer -- well this is your spot! On a long weekend in Paris, my guide book hinted at an underground Jazz scene. One of the locations recommended was Caveau de la Huchette. The four of us turned up to find a dead bar with no sign of music or a crowd...that was until we spotted a couple disappear to the left and not come back! Curiosity got the better of us, so we set off in the direction they went. Behind a curtain. Down some stone steps...and it was "going off!!" A crowd on the dance floor, band playing. This "cave" in the Latin Quarter has an upstairs bar and a downstairs room with red hot jazz and blues! People of all ages, races and creeds dance to the swinging sounds of the local musicians. Old folks dancing with young folks, people switching partners after every song... It's one big party! Everyone is having a great time, and it's truly a pleasure to observe people without inhibition embracing the joie de vivre (joys of life). This venue has been open for many years, and famous musicians such as Lionel Hampton have payed their dues in these Parisian confines. Full liquor and a limited assortment of beer. I think they had 4 or 5 beers, which isn't impressive considering the average Orlando bar has over 30 beers. But if you're here then you're in Paris, so suck it up. Highly recommended if you enjoy live music, and tripping the light fantastic. read more

This was my second time to this club, the first time being many moons ago with a local Parisian. I stumbled onto it this round by accident as a tourist while in search of a great jazz club. Once in the door, I immediately followed the music down the stairs to a super cool cave with seats lining all sides. A great four piece jazz band was playing and several couples were braving the dance floor with giant smiles on their faces. The crowd was a cool mix- some older couples lined the lower seats and were obviously there for the jazz. Some smooth dancers who seemed like regulars were obviously there to bust a move. Others (like me) were loving the whole vibe and just taking it all in. The drinks, music and general ambiance left me wondering why we don't have something like this back home. The only detractor was the lack of fresh air down there - it got a little stale but loved the atmosphere enough to not really care. Definitely a fun and unique place to go with friends and let loose! : ) read more
