If you're looking for a funky hidden gem of a literal underground Jazz club in Paris, this is it. It looks like an unassuming enough place when you walk up, a big hotel-y building in Le Marais. But once you walk in, pay for the cover/drink voucher, and start walking down the stairs, the mood shifts and the magic starts. The walls narrow and turn to old stone bricks, the lights dim, the hallways turn, and soon enough you're facing a small stage with a curved ceiling. There's a reason they call it a cave. It's super intimate and tight, but that's what's so special about it. The night I went was an open mic, so musicians took turns switching out spots and playing their hearts out. I was never a big jazz guy before this, but I am now absolutely hooked and sold. Every single performer was incredible and the energy was electric. After I claimed my seat, I went to the bar room in the back to claim my drink. I went for a glass of wine which I can't complain about. There's another small room too for some extra seating. But why sit there when you can be a few feet from the performers. It's a heck of an experience and I can't recommend this spot enough. It's a must do when in Paris. read more

Wow! What a find! Friends told us about this small underground jazz club and we booked a Sunday 9:30 show with an incredible accordion/ piano duo. The place only holds maybe 40 people and you're all scrunched together on tiny chairs but you feel like you've been invited to a private jam session (which they also have after the main show). There's a bar to order drinks and the crowd was reverent with their glass of wine as we all watched virtuosos performing live. Amazing. read more

If you want that Parisian jazz club experience with some good live music, this is your place. I've been multiple times and the music has always been on point - classic instrumental jazz music. Great place for listening to music, not socializing. It's in a cave, super small. There's a decent amount of (tight) seating and a small (full) bar in a separate room in the back. I love the fact that they stay open and play late so you can have a long evening here or just cap your night. read more

Really disappointed in this place. We saw some great reviews but for $20 a person I would not recommend. The jazz was far too smooth and I was struggling not to sleep. Maybe it's relative but as a New Yorker with comparably amazing free jazz playing at many restaurants in our city this is not what I was expecting. I hope there's better jazz in this city but this makes me not want to try again. read more

It is a very intimate venue; you will literally be sitting inches or feet away from the band, but that is what makes it so special. It's a sense of belonging, of community that will bring us back. Even though we were probably the only Americans in the room, we nodded our heads, snapped our fingers and shuffled our feet to the voices of the singers and the melodies of the musicians. We stumbled upon 38 Riv while walking after dinner during our first night in Paris. The entrance left little to go by. "jazz here" is about all I got, so out of curiosity we walked in, down 2 flights of stairs to a cellar. Poked our heads into the barrelled brick room and I was immediately hooked. Intimate little room, bar in the back, everyone attentively listening to the live jazz. after a couple of songs the band members changed and I realized it was an open jam session. Whoever brought an instrument was welcome to take their turn. We ended up staying for hours. What a memorable night! read more

Went here with a friend. Cool cave venue downstairs, and very friendly staff, especially the bartender. My friend and I are really into jazz and were a bit disappointed with the concert. Hard when there is no bass or drums (just piano and tenor sax). Granted it was a Wednesday, so probably not one of the bigger shows, but I'm pretty sure we were the only folks not personal friends of the owner or musicians in there. Also, as cool as the venue was, my friend and I couldn't help but be distracted by a mouse scurrying to and fro in the bar area. We were just having drinks so we weren't worried, but they were selling sandwiches, so I'm glad we weren't eating those. I think my friend and I would check out other options before coming again, but if I could see folks having a good time here too. read more

Really cool spot that the tourists dont know about. The club is downstairs underground and it feels like you're in someone's private cave party because its so small inside. The result of being small brings about social interactions with everyone inside. We meet many friendly french locals that night, but most importantly heard many sets of great jazz music. The crowd had musicians that were eating and drinking while they waited for their turn to play, you had no idea if the person sitting next to you drinking a beer with you was a musician or just a customer, that added more to the uniqueness and intrest to the place, when all of the sudden the drunk guy next to you went on stage and played a few sets. Fred Larsen the bartendee was the employee that stood out the most, because he was respecful and nice to everyone, while at the same time managed to make drinks. The entrance is only 2 euros a person and there is a one drink purchase for each guest that is mandatory, which will cost you 10 to 15 euros a person total. This place was one of the highlights of our visit. We arrived about 45 minutes before it was officially open. I missed the "sans public" part of the 1830 event (a workshop). We were welcomed and hung out at the table in the bar area. Drinking wine and sharing a very tasty sandwich. At 2030 we found a seat in the intimate concert room (it seats about 30 people) and were treated to an evening of some excellent music by a jazz trio. No sign of the mouse that one reviewer saw. I highly recommend this place. Their website is in French but contains current information. Watch out for "sans public." I suggest arriving early to get a seat and if your lucky a small table to set your drink. There was no cover charge. read more
