Drove all the way here to see that it has been permanently closed!! No building, no food!!

Ok. So...10 minutes in, I was thinking "2 stars...if they are lucky!" But you know what...? Turns out they were lucky, so 3 stars it is! Things got a little better and the two wines that are actually under their name/label were surprisingly delicious! Anyway, we were driving back to Louisville from Nashville and the Fella filled me with joy when he said we could stop at a couple wineries on the way. Not only is it a great way to break up the monotonous drive, but it allowed me to try more Kentucky wineries (like a Pokemon, I wanna try 'em all!). Cave Valley Winery was the right distance between the first place we stopped and getting home, so we decided this would be our final boozy-stop on the way. It is easy to get to, just a small loop off the highway at the Park City exit. It was a strange first impression when we got there, though. The winery isn't so much a winery, as it is a room inside an old hotel that also operates as the site's regular bar. They were also getting ready for a Ladies' Shooting competition to be held on the weekend, there were lots of gun signs and promotional booths and tents set up and sponsor banners. We weren't initially sure that we were at the right place...maybe some of the banners were covering the winery sign? Also...guns and alcohol...what could go wrong, amirite? It was strange. When we walked in to the bar, there were two people futzing around with the register iPad and a printer. It took a bit before we were greeted, and when we were, they both mentioned that they were not the tasting host and would go get her. While she was being retrieved, we were able to look over the wine list and the woman at the bar got us started with our first sample, though she admitted she didn't really know anything about the wines. Once the usual wine tasting host, Amber, came in we were ready to lock and load. (Get it...because of the gun range...no? Ok.) You get 5 samples for $5. But be aware, they only have TWO wines under their own label. The two they have are surprisingly delicious, if I do say so myself. As for the rest of the two-page wine list, they are all wines from Wight-Meyer, which is not one of my favorite places either. So that was a little disappointing. And they were out of a few of the wines I wanted to taste. Amber was pretty alright though, with some information on tasting notes. But she was minutes from the end of her shift and asked that we close out right away. Which was fine, we needed to get on the road again anyway. Overall, I am conflicted. It was a weird experience, but their wines are decent and once Amber got to our tasting, all was well. But temper your expectations if you are a winery-hopper like me. (If I was feeling more generous, I would give another star just for all the puppers roaming about....but really, 3 stars is where its at.) read more

This is a tough review. I can't quite give it more than three stars although there are a few reasons that I'd love to. I also can't go lower than three stars but there are a few reasons that it should be lower. First: The Good: -- The wine they have is good. Even the Wight-Meyer wine tasted better here than it was when I visited the actual Wight-Meyer winery. -- The staff is nice. -- Plenty of parking. -- They have events here. -- Easy to find. -- It appeared that they had a restaurant but it wasn't open. -- They have some cuddle-puppies. And Now: The Bad: -- When we arrived, it's a building with a lot of different things. You'll find the bar area with a little seek and find. -- They only have two wines. Those two wines were surprisingly delicious but it's tough for me to send the wine crowd here when they only have two wines. -- You do get 5 tastings for 5 bucks. Where do your other tastings come from if they only have 2 tastings you ask? All of the other wines are from Wight-Meyer winery. -- We walked up to the bar and it took a minute for the two folks to say hello to us. They were pre-occupied with something else(printer/card reader or something). I usually have a fair amount of patience as I don't try to make commitments to be a certain place at a certain time. They did say hello but it was all a bit weird and awkward. -- The lady that knows the most about wine didn't start the tasting. It was another lady that works up front. That's fine and bless her heart for admittedly telling us that she knew nothing about wine. -- Starting with tastings two - five the lady that knows the most about wine came back. She gave us our tastings and told us certain things about each but in between tastings she was back and forth. The place is getting ready for some type of shooting competition this weekend so it seemed that the entire place was a bit frazzled. -- Come to think of it, I'm not sure if you can order wine by the glass here. I didn't see anything on the menu about it. -- I don't fault any of the employees here. It's not your typical winery experience. To Close: As I stated before, this isn't your typical winery experience so I can't recommend it. You won't get extensive tasting notes about the wine and the conversation might be slim. It's unfortunate because the two wines under the Cave Valley name are delicious! I do hope they take on more wines under the Cave Valley brand but when they do... they should look into having a more permanent wine experience for the people that do seek them out. read more

This was a pit stop on our way to find food. Located in Park City, the winery is located inside of the lodge. Not quite a winery you would envision but more of a winery inside of an enclosed room. The place itself also serves as the hotel bar. This weekend happened to be slightly busy in relation to a ladies shooting competition. My boyfriend and I were promptly greeted and handed a menu of the different wines. Not all the wines were local, but the few I tasted were pretty tasty. I did do a tasting which was very inexpensive. The only part I didn't care for was they served you one at a time instead of a flight and would stand and stare at you impatiently to finish onto the next. Overall, my experience was okay. I did buy a bottle of the local wine to take home. If you're in the area I can recommend maybe making a pit stop. However, I wouldn't go out of my way if not in the area. read more

This is a fledgling vineyard that cellars wine grapes off sight in Shephardsville. Their tasting menu features local grape varietals as well as a few country wines. Our host was pleasant and had some knowledge of the wines. The tasting room is essentially a bar for the hotel. It looks a bit awkward and has a dated atmosphere. 2 1/2 stars for atmosphere and wine tasting experience. At first I wondered where the grapes were, and but on our way out we found the vineyard several yards from the road nearest the building. read more

So we were out at mammoth cave national park and looking for a bottle of wine. What we found was good food, wine and their Saturday night band night. Overall much more than just the bottle of wine I was expecting and a great Saturday night. We were so excited to try out a local winery after our visit to Mammoth Cave. When we drove up we were pleasantly surprised by the view. However, when we went into the winery it was more of an interior bar with no windows. Once we got the bartenders attention and asked if there was any outdoor seating, she pointed to the only outdoor seating which was overlooking the parking lot. We were shocked they were not using the outdoor gazebo area that had the best overlook we had seen in the area. We ended up thanking her and leaving not having tried anything. Instead we sat up in the gazebo enjoying the scenery as a train went by below as we planned where we were going to go instead. So sad as this place has huge potential with such fantastic views. read more

What IS this place?? A restaurant, a gun range, a hotel and a "winery." Very odd. What I don't understand is how this is considered a winery?? They don't make wine! The wines they sell are another winery's. A place that serves food and other people's wine is called a restaurant. Not a winery. Maybe a wine bar at best. But not a winery. When we arrived, we walked in to the abandoned bar. So we went looking for someone. Down the hall, we found a staff member leaning up against a counter texting. When I told her we were interested in doing a tasting, she told us to go back down to the bar and someone would be there to help us shortly. So we went back and sat down. Guess who came by shortly? Guess she was finished texting. The wines were good. But I'll have to do a review on the winery that makes them, I guess. read more

Located in Park Mammoth Resort, this winery is attached to a hotel and a 2,000 acre campus designated "wet" (alcohol allowed) in this dry county of Kentucky. The wine bar itself is cozy, about six stools and anothe six tables. Serving local wines and as of yet no food, prices were extremely reasonable. A tasting of six wines with a complimentary glass was only five dollars; full glasses were five dollars and bottles fourteen. The bartender was personable and unwilling to be restricted to simply pouring wine. She mixed a peach wine margarita for my wife which was quite enjoyable. My friend and I stopped in for a quick taste and a bottle of wine on our road trip. It's located within a resort and the signs made it easy to locate. It wasn't very busy, but then again we were there at 9am, ha! The bartender was very sweet and personable. She recommended a great and tasty wine: Diamond. She informed us the vineyard was still young; only 2 years old. It takes about 5 years for the grapes to mature for them to begin making their own wine. Still a quaint place to stop for a tasting! read more
