What a beautiful little winery and only about an hour from evansville. The drive is beautiful. We tasted several wines and they were all very tasty. We really enjoyed talking with the owners and hearing about the wines and the history of how they started the business. The winery has Such a great setting high on a hill with beautiful views of the Ohio river. We had a hard time picking our bottle of wine but decided on the Catawba and it did not disappoint. We brought a picnic basket and enjoyed our treats with our wine on their patio deck. We can't wait to go back especially when the weather warms up a bit. read more

I really wish that Blue Heron Vineyards was closer, because I could see myself sitting on the deck, drinking a bottle of wine and watching the barges float down the Ohio River. Make it a rainy day and I think I would be in heaven. On a recent trip with 11 of my closest friends, we made the journey to Blue Heron. I had never heard of it, and the only real reason we stopped was because I saw it on the map when plotting our trip of southern Indiana wineries, and I knew we would be close to it. Out of 10 wineries, this ended up being our favorite by far. First, the directions on their website say the road to the winery "becomes rustic". I believe what they meant to say was "our road is gravel. it's steep, and if you have a small car, you'd better pray you make it up". Thankfully my SUV climbed to the top like a champ, but it's steep and rough. We parked in front of a shed-like building and were immediately met by the winemakers. They introduced themselves and asked our names while shaking our hands, and were invited into their wonderful winery. I really can't say I've meet anyone nicer than this lovely couple, both retired educators along any wine trail. After gasping at the beautiful view of the Ohio River through the woods, we were led inside the tiny two room winery.Both rooms had items for sale that seemed out of place for a winery: save, 60's cookbooks, walking sticks, etc., but that's just how this place is. In the middle of one of the rooms is a dining room table that we did our tasting at. Seriously! A dining room table in a winery.. it was awesome! Oh yeah, no wine glasses here either. Just small juice glasses with the most wonderful celtic etchings on the side. Wines; french varietals, slightly dryer than what you normally find in Indiana, which made the place even better. A few of my friends aren't dry wine drinkers, and I will admit their review of the place is probably different than mine, but I'm a dry wine drinker and they aren't writing this review, so I say it's great! I can't wait to get back to Blue Heron, if nothing else, just to see the view and chat with the owners again.. but I bet there will be wine purchased too! I stopped in at the Blue Heron Winery while on a road trip. The location is beautiful with a great view of the Ohio River. We were quickly greeted by Lynn, co-owner with her husband Gary. She gave us a tour and showed us the different beautiful pieces of artwork around the winery and told us about the music they have during the summer. After the tour we went inside for a tasting Lynn asked what style I like and she picked the perfect wines for me to try. Each wine has a different taste and story behind it. I bought two bottle including the 4 Blue Stars which honors their four relatives in the military. A great winery and great people. Just a note they only take cash but it is really worth it. read more

Our visit to Blue Heron Vineyards was a strange, but lovely experience. It's quite a hike from Indy, but the weather was beautiful and we were in the mood for a mini-trip, so fast forward about three-ish hours from our departure time last Friday afternoon and we found ourselves driving up a very steep, narrow road through some pretty dense woods towards Blue Heron Vineyards. Once we arrived, we made our way to the small tasting room, passing all sorts of outdoor odds and ends. It was about this time that I started to feel like I was entering the Land of the Limberlost... The tasting area is a tiny little room with walls covered in pictures, maps, and various knickknacks. It was kooky and strange, but also homey and nice. The owners are an older couple who immediately treated us like neighbors...and I guess some of the other guests actually were. There was Mrs. So-and-so from the next county over and Mr. Someone-else who grows grapes out yonder way standing around, listening to the gentleman owner tell an old story while his wife poured us our various samples. It's definitely a literal mom and pop operation. After taking in a few samples, we bought a bottle (with our cash, of course, as we'd left our checkbooks in 1995) and made our way outside. Their grounds are super expansive and there were several isolated little nooks and crannies to choose from where we could look out on the river and sit among the trees, enjoying our wine. It was pretty other-worldly, but definitely enjoyable. I can see us making our way back one of these days and spending more time exploring the grounds, enjoying the wine, and taking in another story or two. read more

TIP They only take cash or check! With that being said what a fun place. The owners were so friendly and really made you feel welcome. The tasting room is small and neatly decorated. Make sure you explore, so many neat little areas to enjoy your wine. And finally a great view overlooking the river. Looking forward to returning. read more

It was a bit strange...very small and quaint...but interesting. We met the owners which was very nice. They were actually the last place on the hoosier wine trail so we received our glasses from them which was great! We did like one of the white wines and the four star that he has dedicated to his four children that are in the military that was a blueberry. The view however...breathtaking! I wished that it was a little warmer so we could have sat on the porch and enjoyed the view a little longer. read more

What a beautiful surprise!! Decided to take a Saturday drive along the Ohio and happened upon Blue Heron in Cannelton (Rocky Point). It was something to do, as things to do in winter-time are sparse in this area, so we took a chance and drove up the winding, rocky hill to go taste some wine. I'll precursor this by saying my husband and I are not fond of Indiana wines. I'm sure they're good for people who love sweet wines; that would not be us. We LOVE dry reds, so we weren't holding out much hope...like I said, it was something to do. Two hours later, we left with new friends, big smiles and a "wow, that place is cool!" This is a small operation run by a retired, married couple Gary and Lynn Dauby. So small, that the when we arrived to the tasting room, a small handwritten sign said, "we're in the cellar, come on down!", and upon our arrival were greeted by a handful of locals volunteering their time to help Dauby's bottle some of their reds. They were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They instantly offered us a taste of what they were bottling and then escorted us upstairs for further tastings in a warmer room. What we came across were some wonderful dry red wines that are incredibly hard to come by around these parts!! We ended up only purchasing 1 bottle but will certainly return for more. Their tasting room is overlooking the Ohio river in a wooded area with lots of bird watching and outdoor seating which I can't wait to return to in the summer. The owners invited us to return anytime with a meal to eat and a bottle to drink on their lovely deck. Aside from the most excellent wine, the company was epic!! The guys bottling came upstairs and chatted with us for a while before we left. We learned all about the grapes, the wines, the bottling, the history of the Dauby's retirement gig, the local summer festivals, boating on the Ohio and much much more...and a little more than you wanted to know, that is unless you're interested in entering a bathing suit contest for women averaging 200 lbs.! Hahahahaha!!! I HIGHLY recommend a stop into Blue Heron for a taste of some local wine, a feeling of some local friends and an opportunity to thank the Dauby's for their four children who serve our Country in the military. This winery is a must see on your wine country excursion! The dry Reds were my style - not sweet but wonderfully aromatic and lovely, with no after taste. Gary and Lynn are super sweet, and Lynn actually drove us down to see the Celtic Cross because our car was too low. Here I am with my lovely fiance, relaxing in the Hoosier National Forest, listening to the birds, and writing a review. I don't normally write reviews while on vacation, but boy did this place stand out. As another reviewer mentioned, the drive up is steep! My car has a lot of power and I had to drive up in first gear. Please take it slowly because there is only one road and you never know if someone is going the other way. Drive all the way up to the top. If you ended up at a house, look to your left and take that road instead. Go carefully around that curve and you'll end up in a parking lot. Walk out out to your left and take in the craftsmanship. There is a bit of art to be seen here. The place makes you want to invite a bunch of friends over to drink wine all day. It really does! There is seating everywhere with various spots to rest your glass at. A cat may follow you around a bit and flop over wherever it seems to be justified. We had later learned that yes, you can have parties hosted here, most notably weddings receptions, and that wouldn't be such a bad idea. There's even no need to bring a grill! Walk on into the tasting room and talk to the great couple who run the place. Most of their wines are dryer for our tastes, but both of the oaked wines were right up our alley. We bought a bottle of On Deck Red (black capsule). It has a very distinct bourbon taste to it, we just had to bring it home. I've never had anything like it before, and am halfway thinking about going back and buying more, if I can convince my other half of the idea. At the current price of fifteen dollars, I'd say it's money well spent. This is actually one of the top three best wines I've ever had, and I've had a lot of wine. In all, the setting is very serene, the hosts are super friendly, and the wine is out of this world. If you like sweeter wines, they have a few, but my money is going toward something I'm probably going to be hard pressed to find anywhere else. read more

We visited in Sept of 2014, Labor Day weekend. Gary was very good in explaining what the wines are and what the differences were. Most of the people in our group were biased towards the sweet wine, so we totally bypassed the dry ones. The view is amazing, the furniture around are things you'd go "ooohhhh" and "ahhh" about especially when you sit on it and enjoy the view of the river, kids stayed on them while we went in for tasting. They had some cheeses in the fridge but not a lot. They did however had bags of pecans for $7. We'll come back again! The Celtic cross was a great stopover and little tourist spot as well. read more

The message on the answering machine said they were open for business so we stopped there Friday 12/2 during their regular hours only to find a few cats running around. The view was nice can't tell you anything about their wine. read more
