What a disappointment. Horrible portions and the excuse is they pre package the meat for a large sandwich that gets 5oz of meat. If you order a small the guess what half the portion is and spread it on the sandwich...this is how the cashier just explained it to us. We ordered the beans and the chili as our "small sides" and the beans were in a 2oz container meant for condiments while our chili was in a 5oz typical small side size. Below average BBQ. Too bad, seems they have the basics and equipment to really do it right. I've been to Kansas City, Memphis, Texas and North Carolina to eat BBQ - I didn't need them to meet or exceed those expectations - just get close enough and I probably would have scored them higher but they missed... BBQ.... but different than the norm. The meat is always great. Recently had the ham and it was really juicy and sweet, but I like the beef too. Tasty but a little bit too spendy- a sandwich runs about $7. The dragon wheels (stewed meat and potatoes) are SOOO good but at $3.50 for a teeny portion I feel like I'm being ripped off. One serving is only a few good bites. The sauce is very tomato-y, good but not quite spicy enough. The place is ancient- reminiscent of the way the kent valley used to be. Hands down the best French Dip you'll ever eat. I've been coming here for over 10 years (specifically for the French Dip). I can't necessarily say anything about their BBQ since I haven't really ventured through the menu. But if you're ever in the areas, definitely try it out, you won't regret it. read more

Service was excellent and staff were very polite. As far as the BBQ, could not taste the flavor of the meat/fats, no salt, and the wood smoke flavor did not come out to enhance the meat flavor. Sandwiches had alot of butter, a French bread (should be sliced white bread served with onions and pickles) was used, meat was room temperature and the meat to bread ratio was more bread and little BBQ. Potato salad was undercooked, flavor was good but texture was not appealing. Overall for the price, the BBQ here is a "bust", does not hit the mark with respect to traditional BBQ, especially if your from the South. Odd selection of beef, there was no brisket! Sausage was the only meat to have flavor, a little dried out to where the "fats" were squeezed out, leaving a "jerky" texture but compared to the pork (sliced not pulled at this joint) chicken and turkey, the sausage held up. The apple crisp was a "bust" too, buttered French bread with apple slices with cheese on top, did not expect it but taste...was well...we just did not eat it. If you need a BBQ sandwich...maybe this is the place but as far as traditional BBQ plates, not the place to pay the heavy price tag when your just getting bread with butter. read more

This was my second time eating here. I went a few years ago, before it got some hype and it was really good and reasonable. Not tonight. I drove my family up because the had heard of it and wanted to try the food. To start we were the only ones in line, and got serious attitude and eye rolling form the girl taking our order because we we trying to decide what to eat. 2 dinners, 2 sandwiches, 2 large sides and 4 drinks cost us $100. I thought no big deal the food is good. Nope. both the rib plates were pretty dry, beans are out of a can. The large side of coleslaw taste like it had soured and the potatoe salad tasted about the same as you get at safe way. The amount of meat in the sandwichs did not seem to justify the $12 price. I tried to make the best of it and not complain, but my family did all the way home. Really disappointed. I forgot to mention the rude couple that thought it was Ok for an after dinner smoke since the dining area is outside and the full garbage bags sitting right next to one of the tables. read more

My girlfriend and I had the pulled pork sanwiches which were delicious. The bread was toasted perfectly and the sauce was great. I got a side of chili which was some of the best homemade chili I have had period. The soda they have is also great. It's a minor detail but something that is noticeable. This was my first time here, won't be my last. Walked in and the staff was very friendly and very helpful. Smelled really good inside made it hard to make my mind up. I finally went with the beef sandwich, the roll was toasted on the outside but still soft on the inside. Also had a small potato salad and beans, I don't know if they are but both tasted homemade, very delicious. While I waited for my food I was given a sample of the kielbasa, now it's going to be harder to decide what to get next time. I have been coming here for a long time and it is always the same girl at night during the week. She has an attitude and lacks customer service skills. It's sad because the food is pretty good. Tonight I spent 30 bucks on a call in order for a sandwich, small side of beans, soda and a few pieces of salmon, tipped 15% then asked for a little bit of bbq sauce on my sandwich..... Went to the Caveman Kitchen while visiting some friends about a week ago. The staff was very friendly and patient while we tried to decide between all of the delicious choices. I love Caveman Kitchen, I have been eating there since the early 90's and the food is smoked to perfection. They used to have a Lake City Way location in North Seattle but it closed when I was in high school so I drive down to the Kent location once or twice a month to get my smoked meat fix. My favorites are the French Dip, the chicken dinner and the polish dinner, for sides I love the potato salad, the dragon wheels and the potato bug. If you are looking for a turkey for the holidays I highly recommend geting one of there smoked birds, they make the holidays easier and taste great. read more

When I got out of the car it smelled terrible--the trash was overflowing and looked like it hadn't been picked up in a couple of weeks. Once I'd ordered I went to get my drink and the drink machine had exposed parts and not enough ice. The food itself was atrocious. The beans seemed like they came stright from a can--too many onions, not enough meat and very, very mushy. The coleslaw was swimming in mayonaise--very little cabbage and carrots. The sandwich (BBQ beef) was served with way too much sauce--leading me to think "why are they hiding the meat?"--the meat itself was very dry, not smoked and sliced too thin. I only ate a few bites and had half of a mind to go back and ask for a refund. The only upside of this experience was that the counter help was friendly and the food was served quickly. Their food is delish, so much so that even though we live in the heart of Seattle, my spouse makes the trek to Kent just for this excellent smoked turkey and chicken. I am disabled and can't put together the spread I could when I was younger. Now Caveman does the Thanksgiving and Christmas meat, and all we have to do is put together the sides. As to those who howl when they close for a bit, don't you think everyone is entitled to a vacation? Looks like they take theirs during a slow season. I first started eating here in 1977 & I still find the food to be good. The barbeque sauce is just OK. It does work very well on their sandwiches. I have tried making barbeque sandwiches with KC Masterpiece, my favorite sauce & the flavor does not work. The potato salad is the best I have ever had. The baked beans are really good. After hearing great things about this place, I thought i would stop by. Got the salmon dip sandwich. Salty butter is all I tasted. Hardly any salmon. It was not good. I decided to come back to try something else. I got a beef bbq sandwich. The beef was fatty and the bbq sauce was some sort of ketchup. Gross. $23 in the hole and will not be returning. I wanted to love it. The gentleman who took my phone order and rang me up was a total sweetheart, but that was pretty much it. It's overpriced with a fake smoke tang (at least on the chicken). The triple decker corned beef sandwich felt really light on meat, which made me thankful I'd called back and added the extra meat. Even then there was only one real layer. I'm not sure where the 'triple' came in. We also tried the dragon wheels. Literally so salty we couldn't eat them. Overall I paid over 40 dollars for a sandwich, salad, and a small, maybe 4 oz of onions and carrots with 2 pieces of potato. I'm just sad. read more
