This place definitely keeps Austin weird! Vince, the artist, is friendly and welcoming. My friend and I were in awe as we explored this backyard art. There was just so much to take in - random objects everywhere. I found the chaos of it all to be the best part! This would be a great place to play "I Spy." Ha! Call Vince in advance to find out what days he's showing. Also, this is a residential area of town. I parked on the street near the house. This is definitely a spot to add to your Austin bucket list!

The Cathedral of Junk is exactly what it sounds like, and somehow so much more. Tucked away in a South Austin backyard, this towering, climbable, winding maze of discarded objects is the creation of one man, Vince Hannemann, who's spent decades turning other people's castoffs into an evolving, sculptural sanctuary. Important tip: you can't just stop in unannounced. You must call ahead and make a reservation. It's a one-man show, and Vince handles everything, so be kind when you call. He gets a lot of out-of-towners passing through, and he does his best to accommodate, but the place can't always be open. What makes this worth your time isn't just the sheer scale of the thing, though it's genuinely impressive. The real highlight is meeting Vince himself. He's a fantastic storyteller, sharp, a little bristly, but endlessly passionate about his creation and the Austin art scene. He can tell you about how it started, what's been added over the years, and how, astonishingly, he knows where every single object goes. While there is no admission charge, he encourages donations, and he also accepts donations of "junk" if you feel compelled to bring something unique. He was injured earlier in 2025, and the Cathedral was closed for a few months, so always call to check his availability. The Cathedral feels like a precursor to those immersive, multi-story art installations popping up around the country, like Meow Wolf, except this is one man's vision. No glowing lights, no interactive digital displays, just decades of collected ephemera arranged with a kind of stubborn, wonderful artistry. If you live in Austin or you love outsider art, make the time to see this. Call ahead, be patient, bring a cash donation if you can. It's a reminder of what continues to keep Austin weird in the best possible way.

It's very different. A massive amount of things compiled together to form structures. There are stairs to climb. Old things like skis, typewriter, glass bottles in cement. It's located in a neighborhood. The owners and creator are very friendly. They ask for donations.

10/10 unique experience in Austin! #KeepAustinWeird The Cathedral of Junk is in a residential neighborhood and I got the idea that neighbors aren't a huge fan of the traffic it brings in. Some road blocks and signs say through traffic isn't allowed on the street the cathedral is on but I parked with ease (as did others) in the neighborhood. The Cathedral of Junk is truly as the name suggests. Over a three-story structure, concrete holds countless objects, from tires to McDonald's Happy Meal toys to old telephones. You could spend days looking at every single item a part of the cathedral. Before the cathedral, there is a small shed with some history about how Vince, the artist and homeowner, created it and continues to add to it. Vince was sat outside his back door, chatting with visitors as they came in. A great and friendly guy! Visiting the cathedral is free but Vince humbly asks for donations, which can be made in cash or via Venmo. A great place to visit for those who enjoy something off the beaten path! And an awesome place for kids to romp around.

I enjoyed my visit to this attraction. It was a hot day but our ability to walk through the artwork was enjoyable because of the shade it provided. There is a lot to take in. The artist did a great job stimulating your eyes/mind and also engineered a path that allows you to walk through and up the exhibit. I love their approach to art and using items that would have ended up in a landfill. Great job to the artist! Come see their work and don't forget to donate!!

Old Tymey style coin phone booth. The kind Clark Kent used to use to change into Superman.

Walking through the maze, looking at all the different things that a person can make a cathedral out of.

My husband and I visited the Cathedral of Junk for our trip to Austin. Needless to say it was definitely worth it! It's beautiful, and an excellent use of junk that could have ended in a landfill. I didn't want to show too many pictures since it takes away the curiosity of it all, but if you're ever around Austin it's a sight worth driving to. Entrance is free, and the artist is very kind, please remember to bring cash for donations!

This is indeed a cathedral of junk! I've been wanting to visit the place for years and FINALLY made it there today! The owner and architect, Vince, is a very pleasant and gregarious gentleman. He began building this cathedral in the late 80s in his backyard. It's fun to look at all the relics that went into its creation. It is free to tour, you must call ahead, and I strongly encourage you to leave a donation in his donation box. This was and continues to be a labor of love that Vince is sharing with us. Let me know if you visit! Thank you, Vince!

The Cathedral of Junk is peak Austin in the best way... weird, creative, and surprisingly beautiful. Every inch is loaded with art, history, and personality. The owner, Vince was very accommodating. Call ahead and wear good shoes. This place is an absolute must-see!

Yall, this man has been building this since he was 16! We tried to look at everything but there was SO much. So many things brought back so many childhood memories. It was truly fun. The owner/artist is super friendly and is so proud of his work. He should be! Just a fun fun place!

Would love to visit for real. NOTE must arrange to visit by calling owner directly 512-299-7413. Love the uniqueness and we sadly had to miss and peak from the road. Will add this as a place to come back and explore. Owner does note there's bad info out on the web so hoping to help spread the right info and avoid any disappointments. Keep Austin weird!

Absolutely amazing, the level of detail that went into this masterpiece. Bonus if you can find the secret beehive!

Everything. It was very interesting and a really cool place to see. Definitely would visit again!

Worth a short trip from Austin! Cool guy and interesting stop! It's a short ride out of the downtown area, in a neighborhood.

They don't even pull the wheels off, but they pillage all the trunks so there's no lug wrenches floating around. Several of the cars with wheels still on are not even stabilized properly to make wheel removal safe. Every time I think it might be worth the time savings of stopping here instead of their competitors I'm proven wrong. It's barely a functional salvage yard and more often than not a complete waste of time. Just use car-part.com or wrench-a-part. You'll be glad you did.

There's often other people out there who may or may not help you if you forget a tool, I had someone loan me an electric ratchet when I forgot my regular ratchet set in the car, only had basic wrenches in my bag (and didn't want to pay the $3 again). Let me start by saying 90% of my reviews are 4-5 stars and being a small business owner myself I…read moretry to be as understanding and forgiving as I can possibly be with my fellow small business owners. Let me start with the good - The bed liner looks awesome and made my older vehicle with faded plastic panels look almost brand new. I get lots of compliments on this bedliner and my guess is that it will hold up and look good for years to come. My judgement is that this is a great product. My issues with Line-X were all concerning the customer experience. Any 4 or 5 of these by themselves would not even cause me to write a negative review but when the total gets to 10+ and I'm paying NOT a small amount of money for the job, at some point I need to give voice to my experience. 1) I made an appointment to meet someone and get an in-person bid in July 2020. I met with someone and was told I'd have a quote within a week. After waiting a couple of weeks, I reached out several times asking for the person and was eventually told the guy who did my walk through got transferred to another store and so I made an appointment to go up there and get a new quote. I can understand. Things happen. So I made the 1.5hr round trip back up there to try again. 2) The work took longer than expected but again, no problem. I was told 2-3 days and it was 10+ days but hey there's a pandemic. People are short-staffed, etc. Let's have some grace with everyone. 3) The owner texted to confirm that it was done and ready for pick up on a Friday. I called up there on Saturday, September 12th, 2020 the day of pick-up just to confirm that everything was ready to go and explained I was going to be driving 1.5hr round trip from Austin (for the 4th time) so please put eyeballs on the car and confirm everything is 100% complete which they confirmed. I loaded up the wife and two kids and headed out on a Saturday to pick up the vehicle. When I got there, the guy who met us was the guy who had been transferred to another store. I guess he got transferred back? Maybe. It's possible I guess. 4) I quickly noticed a bunch of interior plastic panels and parts in a box in the cargo area that hadn't been put back on the vehicle. Not a big deal. Somebody just missed it. I explained that I'll take my family to lunch and return in an hour. 5) I also pointed out at that time a bunch of black overspray on the body of the vehicle. He said he would try to get the overspray off and started wiping it with a rag which had some kind of solvent on it I guess. Dude looked pretty stoned by the way which I have no problem with but maybe do that when you are working on your own car and not mine. When I returned everything looked acceptable (although not what I was expecting for $2,250) and I needed to get back to Austin so off we go! 6) On the way home driving S. on Mopac I could hear a faint noise *bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup* coming from the front left fender. The front wheel well area had become detached and was rubbing against the tire which caused significant damage to the wheel well. The clips were gone. I had some zip ties on hand so I rigged it up as best I could for a temporary fix. 7) I looked under the car to inspect the rest of the body clips and quickly realized they had only reinstalled about 80% of the panel clips around the vehicle. I personally have installed and replaced body clips on this vehicle so I'm pretty sure it wasn't like this when I dropped it off but even if it was I would think they would re-install the paneling without skipping clips. At this point, I was pretty frustrated and didn't want to waste any more time dealing with Line-X, driving 1.5hr round trip, etc. so I just accepted it and planned to deal with this myself. 8) After having the vehicle back for a while and seeing the passenger side body on a bright day, I noticed a big circular blemish on the passenger door where the guy had been wiping off the overspray the day I picked it up. Now every time I look at this door I notice this really annoying spot on the clear coat of an otherwise pristine and heavily upgraded vehicle. 9) I eventually got around to contacting Line-X in Jan 2021 because I had major surgery in October and a baby in December 2020. I believe the final straw that put me over the edge was when I got a quote for $200 to replace the plastic wheel well part. I wanted someone up there to know about my experience. I was told there was a new GM since November and "that we will do what we can do (to) make it right". I told him I wasn't interested in driving all the way back up there and I sent them photos of the damage instead. Tyler reached back out to me later in January and said that he would personally come by my house to look at the vehicle but never did. 10) Finally, I noticed there were some more missing interior body pieces from when they removed the door handles and I had to spend an hour at the junkyard to hunt down replacements.

Thank you to LineX Austin (in Leander). We took our new truck in to get the bed liner installed and…read morey'all did an amazing job! It looks great and the price was very reasonable.
