I read the reviews on this page and I'd passed by this establishment on many occasions so yesterday (6-24-14) I thought I would check it out. Everyone was raving about how good the Crab Rangoon was and I am a huge Crab Rangoon fan myself so I got some along with an order of Garlic Triple Delight. The Crab Rangoon was stale and I had to have them fry me a fresh batch. It came up only a minute later so I was a little suspicious as to whether or not they actually gave me a new order like I asked them to. It tasted like they did so I didn't complain, though I wasn't totally impressed. The Garlic Triple Delight however was good, and huge so I gave this place a C (3 stars). read more

If I could give them no stars I would. They gave us someone else's order. When I called back to correct the situation the girl behind the counter was rude and tried to blame us for giving us the wrong order. Once we got home the food was cold. keep driving. we were told this is the best place in the entire area. we all shared and all had terrible gas and stomach problems and a weird after taste in our mouths. we went to the cities restaurant inspections - well go look for yourself public can view all inspections within the city curry was terrible everything was deep fried and sauce poured over it. if you like that then fine enjoy deep fried heaven its cheap so im guess thats why most enjoy it. not the greatest part of town and it looks like a hole in the wall because it is. seating has taped up benches. yes they are friendly but over and over friendliness doesnt equal good food. as much as you like the owners or workers the food is what it comes down to. as we say try it once if it makes you sick dont return. read more

Love love love the food today. Big portions, fried rice was PERFECT, service was great! Only suggestion is maybe have it on the menu or tell customers that the "vegetable spring roll" has shrimp in it. Being vegetarian, I was really thrown off. read more

My first experience with Cathay Express was after I moved to Independence from South KC. It was horrible. General tso was like a dough ball and tasted like old grease, as did the fried rice. It was bad enough that I didn't go back until today. Wanting Chinese on a Sunday doesn't leave many options and there were enough recent ratings that were good. So I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. I got pineapple chicken which is not battered and fried in a light sauce with pineapple, carrots, snow peas, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. It was delicious as was the lomein. I did find the fried rice kind of tasteless.Egg rolls were a little greasy, but the crab Rangoon and fried dumplings were tasty. Not the best in Independence, but decent food. Not as cheap as some, was $26 for 2 entrees, dumplings and 2 egg rolls but I got a lot of food. I will be going back. Loved that pineapple chicken. read more

The building is old, and the dining area is in need of some deep scrubbing, but the food is always great. Everything is cooked to order with fresh ingredients, and the portions are excellent for the money. It's a place I consider to be mainly a carry out/drive through establishment. When my family wants Chinese food, this is where we come. The food is really good and inexpensive, and the family who runs the place could not be any nicer! It's not really a sit down and eat sort of place, because there is no room on the inside, so get your food to go. Definitely worth a visit, and they have earned my business time and time again. This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is really good. My family has been eating here for years. It's a small place, not too many people dine in, most of their business is carry out. Service is usually pretty fast, but I recommend calling ahead, they are usually pretty busy. I have eaten here for over 14 years. The excellent food and service, along with very good prices for very large portions keeps me coming back. I called in a Carry out order today of Princess chicken, egg drop soup and crab Rangoon. When I got there, I saw they have now got a DRIVE-THRU! I have been eating here for the last 16 years. Combo lo mien with garlic sauce is great! Wish that cathys would have stayed with the bigger lo mien noodles but this is a minor set back. There crab rags are ok at best. Over the years they have got worse when we started eating here they were great but that was many years ago. You have to stop and try this place it's worth your time if you like Chinese food. I recommend combo lo mien with garlic sauce. read more

Going off other reviews I was fairly confident this would be good, and it was. My only tale of differing from other reviews is that unfortunately the General Tso's chicken was far from good. I found the pieces to be way too large on visual inspection, which would easily have been ignored except the taste was also unpleasant, far far too salty. Luckily we had also ordered Garlic Triple Delight and it was very tasty, with just a bit of heat to it. As others noted the hot and sour soup was also very good. read more

I enjoyed my meal (orange chicken & vegetable lo mein). I thought the wait time was fast, which was about 15 minutes. The place itself is kind of a hole in the wall. My husband didn't care for the general Tsos dish he ordered and neither of us liked their egg rolls. read more

Coming from California & tasting some of thee best Chinese foods, I have not found one here in Independence, that can compare! But this place is one of the better ones of all I've tried!!! This is our favorite quick chinese take-out option. We've never had anything but good luck, the food is always freshly prepared, and the service is very friendly. As I've said in other reviews, restaurants should be rated based on what they're trying to do and/or be. This isn't P.F. Chang's, but they're not trying to be. This is the place to call when you want some beef and broc and eggrolls on your way home. I used to love this place. The prices are good and the food used to be excellent. We ordered from here every Saturday for maybe a year. The wait has always been a bit long, and the lady who works there is quite rude, always on personal phone calls and doesnt even attempt to help anyone until she is done, and theres only ever one person at the counter. The food was always worth it...until a few months ago. I keep trying them "one more time," but I always regret it. Even the rice isn't right anymore. I shudder to think what it's like now that they have a drive through. Pass on this one. read more

We have been eating here for YEARS. We will drive from Blue Springs to get this food. The owners are friendly, and you can't beat the prices. Its not all decked out, they use the money for that to get good food supplies. There's a daily special too, I think for 2.99. We tried this restaurant for the first time today. We called at 10:30 a.m. and they said to come on over and they are open. They actually do not open until 11 a.m. The best Chinese food I have had in a very long time. We ordered beef and snow peas, combo loi mein, combo fried rice, egg rolls, and sweet and sour chicken. The prices were so reasonable and the food was the best I have ever had and they gave you enough to feed an army. The chicken in the sweet and sour chicken was crispy and tasty because normally Chinese restaurants make the chicken puffy and I hate that. We also got their chicken wings and they were awesome. Best food in town, however their teenage daughter is rude and acts like we are inconvenience for being there. Rolls her eyes when the phone rings and takes payment with an attitude. I did not like the fact I ordered my food they said 20 min and I got there 25 min later and had to wait 30 min for the food , I figured it was a trust issue with people ordering and not showing up but they should let you know that instead of taking the order. As soon as my girlfriend called, I could here a rude girl on the other end of the phone. When we arrived I could see WHY. The little girl behind the counter was VERY rude. Not only to us but other customers waiting for their food, including a couple who's order she'd messed up. The girl seems more interested in being an entitled little princess, than doing her job. First of all she said our order would take 5min. which seemed unrealistic, none the less we hurried. When we got there it wasn't long, but much longer than the 5min.the little girl quoted us. Then, after she rudely took our order again, and in a very annoying rude "valley girl " accent, told us they have no hot mustard, we got back home and realized our order was completely WRONG! Besides the fact that they should fire the cute little princess, the mom/ cook/ owner was VERY nice, and fixed our order. Giving us a free order of crab Rangoon, which like the rest of the food is not only delicious but cheap! I recommend it, but beware the pretty princess behind the counter. When she's working expect to be treated like a second class citizen, and to have your order screwed up. The food gets 4stars, but her customer service gets 1. read more

I have been going to Cathay's for 15 years. It is the only place in Independence that I will eat Chinese food. I've never had anything there that wasn't good, and the family is very friendly.
