In the near decade since my last review, it has become one of my most frequented businesses and a rite of passage destination for all of my new-to-HK visitors. This was a must-visit for life in the street side foods of Kowloon. (#1) However, this last trip to HK I saw no lines and only one person working the stand. I came through Dundas on multiple occasions to see very little activity, making me wonder if this was the effects of the post-pandemic downtrodden economy, but alas I brought a group of friends and we ordered several drinks. The end result was it was nicely cold, but a tinge blander and less sweet than I had remembered. It was still refreshing, but the wow effect was gone. Before there were people behind the counter cracking open cans of coconut milk and the continuous mixing of drinks, but felt slow and the vibe was a downer. My friends didn't seem too impressed, which I understood why. The bottle prices are up 4HKD (now 30HKD) from the last decade, which is not as crazy as expected. Considering that they've recently expanded to Prince Edward earlier this year, I imagine the brand is doing well, despite it not feeling the same. I'll be back again soon, and while I anticipate another visit, it will be with much lesser expectations. ___________ (#1) Yai Ma Tei is the best.

After dozens of check-ins and a year of time, I thought I would write a little update to my…read moreoriginal Fusion review. Although still absolutely the best grocery store in proximity to me, this fusion is now more of a strong 4 than a 5 to me in my eyes. The shiny patina of a clean, organized grocery store with international labels to a new hungry expat has worn just a touch in light of time, options and exposure. The booze moved to the back and they got rid of the flax seed bread I like so much over the year, but the consistency of everything else that I said before remains the same. The produce section is still pretty good (lots of veggie options coming from food sources that are clearly identifiable versus the unknown food chain coming from some stores). The dairy section is still pretty big. The creme de la creme and what would change it all for me is if that sushi counter went away. It is still there and I happily am eating sashimi from them a few days a week. The check-out lines can still wrap around the corner and be long and you might encounter a unfriendly/non-English speaking checkout person on occasion, but that would be the exception and not the rule. Also, either I am getting wider or those tiny aisles are getting smaller, because there remains the delicate dance when shifting around people at any given time while shopping because there is limited space in the shopping aisles. I am still a fan and will remain shopping a Fusion. Again, I personally find it to be the best option in the area.

If you are pressed for time, your best (and only) option are the four largest coffee shop chains - Pacific, Starbucks, Pret and Simplylife, located in Citibank Plaza. (Note: there is also a smaller Starbucks shop in BOC Tower). Among the four, Simplylife provides the best food, hands down no question; Pret comes second with a good deli selection, while Pacific and Starbucks just stock the usual simple pastries. Simplylife has a juice corner, bread counter/bakery, Chinese siu mei section, burger joint as well as cooked food counter. I usually pop by to grab a freshly pressed carrot/orange juice and a toasted coldcut bun in the morning. I come by for lunch when I am pressed for time as well (but Pret if I am in an extreme rush). So while it hardly alters the menu, you can hardly complain that they have offered more variety and quality for those stranded in this deserted area. Hence, four stars!
