For those stranded between Central and Admiralty, working in Citibank Plaza or BOC Tower, a quick…read moreand easy food choice is limited. If you are pressed for time, your best (and only) option are the four largest coffee shop chains - Pacific, Starbucks, Pret and Simplylife, located in Citibank Plaza. (Note: there is also a smaller Starbucks shop in BOC Tower). Among the four, Simplylife provides the best food, hands down no question; Pret comes second with a good deli selection, while Pacific and Starbucks just stock the usual simple pastries. Simplylife has a juice corner, bread counter/bakery, Chinese siu mei section, burger joint as well as cooked food counter. I usually pop by to grab a freshly pressed carrot/orange juice and a toasted coldcut bun in the morning. I come by for lunch when I am pressed for time as well (but Pret if I am in an extreme rush). So while it hardly alters the menu, you can hardly complain that they have offered more variety and quality for those stranded in this deserted area. Hence, four stars!

The "toppings" I could choose from were things like tofu red curry, fresh rice rolls, and stir fried veggies. Nice for a work lunch or a healthy alternative with fresh veggies. Apparently, gyms used to sell some of these but they seem to have discounted them a while ago because people felt they were too expensive. As I looked down on my phone to reply his message, I noticed the shop I had just stopped by had some powders on display; I could just see the bottom of the shelves and a guy's feet as it was half closed. He noticed my curiosity and pulled the gate up. Yes, I wasn't mistaken; it was exactly what I had been looking for. What a coincidence! The owner of the shop kindly invited me in, even though the shop wasn't opened to the public yet. I could feel a great vibe already, very young active atmosphere. It is a small shop in the heart of Sheung Wan, but it has great variety of products (energy bars, pre-workout drinks, probiotics, antioxidants, etc.) for the weightlifter, the runner, the swimmer...pretty much anything concerning endurance, energy, weight-gain and weight-loss and body definition. And they aren't as pricey as supplements from mainstream chains such as GNC and the like. The owner had been in this business for quite a while and was developing his Portuguese company further in Hong Kong so he's got a good knowledge of the market and the products and can help you decide what's best for you. I found Gold Nutrition a great alternative to other stores I had been to because, to start with, they had the product I was looking for, with the exact requirements my friend wanted (I had to look at the ingredients carefully as these products are highly specific). Second, even if I didn't have the ingredients and specifics written down, I could have counted on the owner's advice and third, although expensive, they are still affordable. So that coincidence made for the happy discovery of the day, not only for me, but also for my friend, and the friends of my friend and...so on.

I have yet to try the food, but one afternoon I had a sudden craving for a smoothie and Yelp led me here. After considering the various smoothie options (a plus in my book!) I ended up with the Berry Pump. Since it uses ingredients like almond milk and coconut, it's definitely more nutty than fruity but I enjoyed it nonetheless. What's nice is that they have stickers they put on every cup that has all ingredients listed along with nutritional information if you're counting calories. If you choose to sit towards the back (as opposed to the front bar area where you can people-watch the escalators) you might want try their complimentary "structured living water", which is apparently not just any water. I've honestly never heard of this concept and in my mind I read it as "strange voodoo water" but to each his own!

During a recent visit to Hong Kong, I went on a mission. An important mission. A kale salad…read moremission. I'm what some might call a particular eater. Personally, I call it a mild form of orthorexia. Despite my penchant for night market snacks and sushi and candied yams and all of that, there's nothing I love more than a raw cacao brownie or a giant plate of micro greens. Unfortunately, the Western organic food movement hasn't quite caught on in Taiwan at all. So I did a bunch of research and made a list of places I wanted to visit in HK, a place filled with health-conscious Western palates. Where the kale is abundant, the Quest Bars are numerous, and the cold-pressed green juice flows freely. nood food is a raw, organic cafe located right alongside the Pure Fitness gym in the SoHo district. There are both dine-in and takeaway food options, plus a full juice/smoothie bar and pre-packaged food items for sale (kale chips, raw chocolate bars, crackers, granola). You can also purchase juice cleansing sets from them as well. I didn't bother looking into this as I was only in town for the weekend. We dropped in for an early dinner on a Saturday evening. After much deliberation, I opted for the small salad box. For $62HKD, you get to pick 4 different salads from a pre-prepared selection in the display case. The brown box is deceptively minuscule - the guys there generously pack it to the brim! I had the kale, roasted pumpkin, cucumbers, and eggplant. Everything was so fresh! Seasoned to perfection, with a savory Mediterranean flair, and absolutely delicious. If I lived in Hong Kong, I would surely be a frequent customer.
