As much as I'd like to support a local business, the owners, while at times helpful, can be jerks. I agree with the other post that they can also be quite rude and don't seem to understand basic Customer Service. They have quite a high opinion of their 'superior quality lumber' and get quite offended when customers want to pick through and choose our own boards. Do not recommend and will not visit again. The place looks dilapidated and run down. The owner seemed quite disinterested in doing any business. The first questions he asked me was - What do you want? Why are you here!? Did not want me to enter the shop to look around and drove me away from the doorsteps saying that the quantity I wanted is too small. He has issues , I witnessed this man park his car in the middle of the street and get in the guys face . he was blowing dirt around in the street . I came knowing some of what I needed for a project and advice. The person I worked with and I went over what I knew I needed and then he took me to a different part of the building to talk about what else I needed. I told him what I wanted to do and he gave me options that were lower and higher in price so I could make my own decision (he didn't hard sell the expensive stuff). He also helped me load up my car. It's not a cheap as the big box store but not outrageous. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and I like supporting local business when I can. They have an excellent selection of normal things as well as an amazing selection of speciality woods. This place now has my business for all future wood needs. read more

Starts getting aggressive with me and then hangs up. I called back and the guy gives me more attitude and doesn't even make a sale. Just a jerk and idiot overall. Yes I'm sure it's difficult with the coronavirus Chantel, however when I called and ask about obtaining some wood I was met with less than stellar customer service. The gentleman on the phone Syren I would need to make an appointment, that there was a big order coming in today and they would take precedence over anything that I wanted, I think him for his time and decided not to shop there. Castro Valley lumber is awesome. Great place to get not only your regular pine boards but also heirloom pieces like 2 inch thick clear oak panels or mahogany. They can cut pieces to size for you and do some deliveries. There is also a small hardware store at the front to supply your hammer and nail needs. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and provides a style of friendly service usually found only in Normal Rockwell paintings. As a general contractor I make my living shopping in lumber/hardware stores. Yeah, the big box stores are generally cheaper. But cheaper can often be very costly. I think of the wasted time I've spent with getting the wrong type or inferior materials from the big boxes. That doesn't happen at a boutique yard like this. Plus, how can you have a relationship with a store that you can't even get somebody to pick up the phone, let alone get you an answer or some advice on a question you may have. Even tradesman like myself don't know everything, so when I have lumber questions, I ask the experts at CV Lumber. When I'm looking for a difficult to find piece for matching up a repair, guess who comes through for me, time and again, with exactly what I need!? And as far as the prices, of course I want to save money just as much as the next guy. But the reason I continue to shop their store is because the value of establishing a relationship with specialty people like John and Bill can, in just one trip, easily pay off the difference in what you might save in a whole year shopping the big boxes. For example, I needed a short, one foot piece of 6 by 8 redwood for a repair on a job. You think I would have any luck trying to find an expensive scrap like that any where else!? John happened to have the very piece I needed, that little extra effort digging around the yard saved me big bucks! read more

Wow! talk about customer service. I came here, basically knowing what I needed (40' of radiata pine) and the guy at the counter says, "how do you want that cut?" Have you ever bought lumber at HD or Lowes? Fat chance anybody every asks you something like that! So i say 4 10 footers would be nice. I also picked up a couple tubes of Sikaflex, he says "hey you know what cuts that?" -no. "WD-40" No kidding!? My point is, you just dont get customer service like that at the big box stores. Ive lived in th area for 5 years or so, this was my first time coming here, and I can asure you I will be back. It's a lumber yard, but inside the store there is plenty of other home imporovement needs; blades for saws, sawsalls, tapes, adhesives, joist hangers, ect... Im not sure what happened with Chuck P., I guess everyone has different expectations, but my experience couldn't have been any better. Oh and I forgot to mention, after I paid I asked, "where do I go to get my lumber?" he says, "it should already be on your truck." Are you kidding?....nope...all I had to do was tie it down....just great customer service....Ill pay extra for that everyday of the week and twice on sundays (if theyre open) read more

Price gouging! They are selling the same wood you can get at a big box store for more than twice the price. The big box store is currently out of stock which never happens, so looks like these guys bought in bulk (from big box store perhaps??) to turn a quick profit and essentially force you to buy from them if you need the wood pretty quickly. We're all struggling through the pandemic together- no need for the local business to take advantage of its patrons during this tough time. read more

The guys at Castro Valley Lumber are AMAZING. They are knowledgeable, very competent and deal matter-of-factedly with their customers. We knew what we wanted, but didnt know what type of wood to use for our backyard project. They discussed treated wood v/s un-treated wood and what they would be used for. They helped us by offering natural untreated 2x12 cedars and 2x12 redwoods. They said that the redwoods were double the cost, but they recommended the cedars for our project. We had a lot of questions and tight timelines. They kept calm thru all of it. The wood was very good quality. I have been shopping at Castro Valley Lumber all my life. It is a place I can go to have all my questions answered and all my needs met. The staff is extremely knowledgable and fair. Castro Valley Lumber has a quality that is unmatched. They have clear lumber products that cant be found anywhere else. They also have staff that can make specialty cuts of all types of lumber and ply or paneling. This may cost a little but it is guaranteed to be cut to the exact dimensions and worth every penny. As a local contractor I can appreciate small businesses and what they stand for. There's just not that many of them left anymore, and there's certainly not any who will spend the time to find what you need. Working on older homes often you can't just pick up material at one of the big box stores that will match a 60+ year old home. Everywhere you go its take a number and there's zero customer service. This place is great for someone who actually wants service. When it comes to there choice of lumber they by far have way better quality lumber then you will find at any box store and other lumber yards. I do work all around the Bay Area and have been to many other lumber yards. Wood is a natural product and most places have knotted, twisted, half missing lumber. This place though has good solid lumber. I can go in here any day of the week get what I need and am treated great. If there's something in particular that I need and they don't have they will do whatever they can to get it or have it made if I want. read more

First of all let me say that this company has the highest prices for its lumber than ANY bay area company. They justify it by saying that the quality of their wood is the best but after personally looking at 5 different bay area lumber yards i found this to be a lie. Secondly the customer service is so bad and disrespectful. The owner didn't even have the patience to let me finish asking what i was looking for and repeatedly rolled his eyes as if i had no idea about what i wanted. what an jerk. Bill and John, who are Castro Valley Lumber, are top notch and provide incredible customer service. I have been working on a rather large project and over the last four months have been to the Company more than a dozen times. Each time I'm greeted personally and given advice particular to my project. They have actually showed me ways to save money instead of profitting themselves. At the big stores I would have had to pick my lumber, they did it for me and chose well! I will pay a dime more for excellent customer service anyday. The quality of their product was exceeded only by their personalized service and sound advice. I'm surprised at David's review--my own do-it-yourselfer questions were handled with respect and patience.
