The shop at the Rossio location is small but very elegant. There is a bar with about 4 high chairs. If they are available, you can grab a seat and look out the window while enjoying the egg tarts! Now, onto the main attraction, the pasteis de nata, Portuguese custard tarts. It was pretty delicious! I ordered a Too Good To Go box and it did not disappoint. 8 pastel de natas for 5 euro was great. They weren't warm when I got them, but still delicious! The crust is perfectly flaky. Castro is a chain with locations in both Porto and Lisbon. We first went to the Porto location and tried the Pasteis de Nata fresh and warm with some coffees, and then this Lisbon location for a Too Good To Go. These ranked 3rd on our tour de nata list, as the custard on the sweeter side. The custard was still nice and light with a flaky crust. These were also the most expensive at €1.70/ea. They have Too Good To Go at several Castro locations in Lisbon. I scored 8 natas for €4.29! sadly, they don't hold up that well, even with a little nuke in the microwave (a toaster oven or air fryer might have been better?). As a day went by, they got sweeter too. A solid choice if you come across a Castro and have a hankering for a nata. Best to get them fresh out of the oven. read more

I visited Castro on a Monday mid-afternoon. I was surprised that it wasn't crowded at all, since I had been warned by others that there are usually long lines. I ordered their iconic pastel de nata. This is a pretty popular de nata spot near the Santa Justa lift. It is quite small with a bar top to stand and dine in. Although quite solid, I think Pasteis de Belem was still the winner for me in Lisbon. The custard was on the sweeter side for me and the crust was not as crispy, especially due to the fact that it was not served warm. Went here for desert, the only have pastel de natas, coffee and Port wine and Ginja. Natas were amazing, you can add cinnamon or sugar on top. This was the first pasteis de nata we tried in Lisbon since it was a block away from our hotel. However, they ended up being our least favorite ones we had out of all the dedicated pasteis de nata bakeries during our weeklong trip. First of all, they were served cold, unlike Manteigaria and Pasteis de Belem. It's really hard to compete with warm pastry, so they were already way behind there. The pastry was nice and flaky, but not the flakiest we had. The custard was too sweet for my husband and a little too gloopy. I will admit it was quite sweet, and I have a considerable sweet tooth. Very good coffee, brewed on an italian cimbali machine. I had a flat white and it came in a tiny espresso type of cup. Tiny, but good. The pastel de nato is very good. We came across Castro during a sightseeing walk through the city. We decided to stop in and give it a try, partially just so we could rest our legs. We are glad we did. This was a great find. Everything about this little pastry shop clicks. The mechanical window display is humorous and eye catching. On the inside, the well laid out pastry de nadas brighten up the countertop, while in the back a pastry chef is clearly seen working his magic.
