Such a beautiful scene! But the service was sad. Had a appointment and it seemed to be a inconvenience. Got the glasses and then the lady just walked away from us. Being that I am in the industry I understand how busy it can be but all it takes is a quick "hello" or "I'll be right with you". It wasn't crowded and we still had to get someones attention to give us our first pour. I wish I could have tasted more because I was told how good the wines were but I never got service again even when I went back up to the bar and waited with a empty glass. This was the first stop on a 2 day wine tour and their Petite Syrah was in my top 2 of the entire weekend. It was fantastic!! We love reds and especially dark, inky syrah's and this hit the spot for my husband and I. Anne was our server and we loved her. She is the manager in the pouring room and was friendly and very knowledgeable. They had a big list and she helped us navigate through to some great wines. We had such a wonderful experience enjoying their quality vino that we are making plans to visit them again this fall. Unlike what most people have said previously...the tastings have increased to $10 but still a generous 7 pours, plus a couple other pours of dessert wines (if you're nice) :) However, if you check in on yelp you get a free tasting plus 10% off of a bottle or you can also get a free tasting if you buy a bottle. I've loved this place for years and it may just be a bad reflection on current staff, but this was worst tasting experience in years (if ever). When asking for a tasting I was instantly demanded that I pay upfront, which is fine (not standard, but fine), but they would not start the tasting until everybody in the tasting area paid so we sat there for about 3-4 minutes just waiting. This Pattern continued every time someone new joined the group because everything stopped for their payment to be processed. It was like slow motion. Does not make sense since your tasting fee is waived with purchase of a bottle, so it ended up being two transactions for everyone in my party (a payment with the up front and payment at the end). However, what was most disheartening was one of the people in my group picked up an item in gift shop area and staff demanded to know if she paid for it before we even left the building, quite odd. Not a comfortable experience at all. Hesitant to leave a bad review since I've had so many good experiences here; however this was exceptionally bad. I know with their popularity they get a lot of foot traffic and probably experience a higher level of theft; however the rest of us should not suffer for this. read more

After winding up and down an unsuccessful and unnecessary wild~goose hunt searching for another winery, we were just So happy to finally be Here on this beautiful landscape! The Castoro staff and grounds really made our tasting dreams come true, because by the hour we arrived in the evening, we had time for but one tasting adventure before closing. And we were completely thrilled and grateful for our choice experience here. Phenomenal, Castoro definitely has "Dam Fine Wine". Walking under and amidst the grapes was a great experience, I recommend tasting their grapes as you walk through. They are wonderful. I've done several wine tastings (more than one in Paso Robles) and this was my best experience by far. Robbie was excellent and made the experience fun. I recommend trying "Robbie's favorites" as he walks you through the best whites and reds (they are better at the reds, but the Marsanne was wonderful). Favorites of mine were the Pinot Noir, the 2005 Reserve Cabernet, the Dulle Mille Sette, Zinfusion, and you HAVE to try their Zinport which is served with a truffle! Their wines are probably on the sweeter side, which I like. There are two tastings, the first room was crowded, but we had the back room with Robbie pretty much to ourselves. Plan on bringing a lunch or getting olives/cheese/meat and having a picnic overlooking the winery. read more

If you are considering using a winery as a wedding/reception venue anywhere in CA then you should look at what Castoro Cellars has to offer. It is quite simply a stunning place. It is surrounded by rolling vine covered hills, friendly cats and a mild climate. If money is important to you then you will save a lot of it if you avoid the trappings of Sonoma, for example. Another question is, do you want your California wedding experience to take place under a big top or stuck inside a large banquet room. No. You'll want a large indoor/outdoor venue in the middle of sweet smelling fields under the stars. The Templeton/Paso Robles option must be considered. After the 10/26/13 ceremony at the Old Mission in San Luis Obispo we had 150 people drink and be fed at our reception at Castoro for 5 hours. The site, wine and catering (hired separately) and staff came in a shade under $10k. Note: your alcohol and food bill are variables and might be higher compared to ours. We have heard from a few people that this is the best wedding they have ever attended. The only thing that went wrong was that the toilet overflowed which caused one of our guest's suit coat to no longer be utilizable the rest of the evening. Castoro, though, was beautiful - and the wine was delicious! read more

Cannot say enough great things about this place. From the second I drove onto the grounds, I knew this was a keeper. My girlfriend and I were greeted by Vincent the cat on the porch (a fluffy orange number who seemed to LOVE attention) and walking inside, the grey spotted Desperado looked up briefly from the couch and seemed to regard us with as much thought as a giant regards an ant. The wines are absolutely phenomenal. The staff is knowledgeable and if they don't know the answer to a question, they're eager to find an answer. Everyone here seems genuinely excited about the products they're offering and they have every reason to be. My favorites included the Trenta Anni, Zinfusion, and Tango offerings. After leaving Castoro, we ended up ordering a bottle of their chardonnay with dinner. If you love wine, you visit any of the surrounding tourist towns, or even if you're just passing through, and you don't visit this place, your life is a bit more dull for having missed it. read more

Greg, 15 yr Castoro veteran, has a wealth of knowledge not only regarding wines but the history of Castoro Cellars. My wife, our well traveled dog, and I truly enjoy Greg's wine presentation, guidance and easy going nature. Here's the rub - very reasonable tasting fee ($5/person) which is waved with appropriate purchase. I was there this past weekend with a friend for wine tasting it and we had the greatest time! The staff is so incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They did an amazing job of describing the wines and giving so much additional information it was wonderful. We visited another winery before this one and were not impressed at all. Admittedly we were novices at winetasting, but we enjoyed the wine tremendously and did end up buying two bottles. What prompted me to take the time and write this review though, was how the staff went above and beyond. I forgot my jacket there at the winery and we had driven some distance so it would've taken a large part of our trip to go back and retrieve it. When I called them to confirm they had my jacket, they promptly offered to mail it to me. Amazingly I received it the next business day! So we have been to Castoro Winery in Paso Robles many times and have always enjoyed it. The grounds are very nice and kid friendly and it's a great place to bring your own food and picnic. The wines are good and at a great price point. Usually the staff is super engaging, knowledgeable and eager to make your visit memorable. However, this was not the case this time. The gentleman who first acknowledged us, simply poured our three tastes with no explanation of what wines they were pouring that day, what wine we were tasting or anything about the wine. When two of us returned with three wine glasses the only conversation he afforded us was "why are there three glasses", we explained one of our party was sitting outside. He then poured the three tastes without out a single word. He was pouring for another couple and clearly engaged with them and his phone and whatever. Perhaps, they were friends, wine club members (which we are not) or he just saw a potential sale. Either way, he was super rude and we let it be known! We asked another gentleman to do the remainder of our pourings and found him to be delightful and eager to make up for the rudeness we experienced. There are more than enough wineries in Paso that have beautiful grounds, kid friendly and have great wines, that we will not be returning to Castoro. read more

We had a fabulous experience at Castoro Cellars. Robbie, you're the BEST! Our trip was back in September and the winery was beautiful. The main tasting room was mobbed (a testament to how popular the "Damn Fine Wine" is), but the side tasting room was just finishing up with a hoard of people and we slipped in as they meandered out to enjoy their purchases. I am SO glad we took the road less traveled. Having had a disappointing day in Paso Robles at several other overpriced, underwhelming establishments, Robbie and Castoro Cellars were just what we needed. I know what I like, so I tasted the two I thought would work for me and then, having sampled a lot of other wines elsewhere that day, I asked Robbie to let me taste his favorites for the remainder of the tasting. My colleagues were amused and agreed that we would all do "Robbie's List". I am SO glad we did. Robbie was hilarious in his descriptions and spot on with every recommendation. We bought two bottles and snacks and went out to the spacious open area to enjoy the rest of the afternoon sunshine. And yes, everyone in our group went home with wine - two of us had cases shipped home to the East Coast. I am only sad to say that the wine didn't last and I've had to order more. We went during the last hour of the day so perhaps the bottles had been sitting open for too long? If we return it will be for the grassy picnic area or one of the concerts - they were just finishing one of the Sunday afternoon concerts and it looked like a fun, laid back afternoon of sipping wine and listening to music. read more

I love Castoro wines. I was one of their wine club members for several years. Later when Trader Joe's started carrying their wines, I stayed w/Castoro as a memeber because I loved their wine and at that time I was getting decent service when I visited the tasting room. I don't know what happened to Castoro's customer service because when I joined their wine club, there was a nice older lady named Joane. Later when I visited the tasting room I looked for Joane to serve tastings and I found Joane to be RUDE. I don't know if she started hating her job or what. I mean, I'd buy several bottles of wine after the tastings so it wasn't like I was just there to taste and leave. One of the wines she served several of the people tasting at the counter, when she got to my group (of 3 people) we waited before the next tasting and Joane just grabbed our glasses and poured out the tasting she had just poured for us and said that this wasn't a bar, etc. I was insulted because I had never gotten treated by anyone this way. So, what I did is right after that I asked my 2 other friends to just leave and while at the same time I was a wine club member, I cancelled my membership and left Castoro for good. In a way I thought it was sad because I loved their wine. Even though you'll find some of their wines at TJ's, I still can't get enough of their Zinfusion. I won't return to Castoro's tasting room. What I do now is go to TJ's and buy Castoro's Chardonnay and Cabernet which are to die for. Andy, at TJ's you buy these wines for about a 1/3 of what you'd pay in the tasting room where you might have to pay a high price to get attitude from the RUDE lady named Joan who probably should retire if she hates her job all that much. read more

This winery came highly recommended, but sadly cannot give it more than one star. Not due to the quality of wine or the beautiful estate, but the service. When we got there, one side of the bar was filled with about 6 or so people busily tasting, the other side two couples were tasting. We stood at the less crowded side for at least 10 minutes without acknowledgment from the server. We politely let Nancy know we were interested in tasting. Still no wine. Finally, she decided to give us two glasses. That was a start, but no wine. Another couple came up to our side, same story, no service for them either. When Nancy decided to let us try a wine, she barely poured any wine into the glass (one glass, not two). Seriously, maybe an ounce. We thought the bottle may have been empty but not so. What the heck?!? We were interested in tasting, buying wine and having a picnic on the lovely deck. This was not to be. After a lengthy wait, she came by with a red. Again barely covering the bottom of the glass. This isn't a winery that uses the pre-measured pour spout, if that had been the case, we may have actually been able to taste some wine. We stood there about 15 more minutes and left. Plenty more friendly wineries out there to choose from. read more
