In what honestly feels like the only Barnes n Noble left in the Bay Area, this place stays packed, every time I've gone in here it's busy. They've got a huge selection of books & mags obviously, other products to buy as well. That can range from Lego sets you don't see in the stores, puzzles, kids toys, other book related novelty items They've also got a coffee shop on the right that's always got people sitting and eating/drinking at, a nice feature for when you come in you can grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat too. That's where most people who want to chill and read go to. They've also got a super knowledgeable staff here too, which for my money is always really helpful.

Whether you like to read or are looking for the perfect gift, this shop is an absolute treat in every way. The people who work here are so knowledgeable about books and scan always recommend the perfect novel or nonfiction based on a description of your preferences. It reminds me of the days when there were neighborhood video rental shops before Blockbuster and Netflix. You could walk in and describe what you were in the mood for, and they would find you the perfect film. Towne Center is this for books!! And they gift wrap for free!!! Why go anywhere else!?! There's a center display right inside the front door with staff selections and new books. What they don't have in volume, they make up with a curated selection, and nice little tags with book descriptions. Bob was an older gentleman who worked here until he recently passed. He also sometimes worked in the Livermore store. Like many men, I got a lot of books here based on his recommendations for history. After chatting with me just a couple times, he recognized me when I came in the store, and steered me towards something I could not resist. I'll miss him very much. I love this store…read more Always tidy , well lit and inviting, and there's coffee too! We love the laid back vibe that the staff gives and they are quite knowledgeable too. You'll notice how eager they are to help you obtain the book that you're looking for, whether they have it in stock or not, they will hunt it down and get it for you. I love coming here, grabbing a latte and then just browsing and discovering new things.

First off, I love the political signs posted on the windows, like the "everyone is welcome here except ICE". When I walked in, the store looked exactly like what I've always envisioned a cozy community bookstore to be like--filled to the brim with books and with a lot of character. I came here to sell some books and it was pretty quick--I had probably 20-25 books and the employee finished in less than 10 minutes. As I was waiting for my books, I walked around exploring. I was very impressed with the selection of fiction. There were actually quite a bit of new releases, but also older books and editions that I would likely not find at a corporate bookstore. If I had the time, I'd love to spend 1-2 hours here just browsing. I didn't expect to get much money for my books; I was actually going to donate them and didn't realize that they still buy books, so their offer was ok. I was moreso pleasantly surprised that the employee was so nice lol, and also a little chatty. Honestly the last time I sold books was probably 15-20+ years ago at Half Price Books and I remember they were always pretty rude/standoffish lol. In addition to the service, the atmosphere, and the book selection, the cherry on top for me was that they have a special shelf where you can buy a book there for 50% off for them to donate to the library at Elmwood Correctional Facility at a bit of a loss for the store. I used most of my credit from the books to get a Stephen King book for the library.

The Bad: The staff can occasionally come across as a bit unwelcoming, and I personally wish the storefront atmosphere stayed more focused on books and less on outside messaging. They sometimes price popular or trending used books higher than what you'd pay for a brand-new copy elsewhere. The Good: I absolutely love the character of this bookstore. Shelves packed floor to ceiling, creaky wooden floors, stacks of books everywhere, and even a cat roaming around the store it feels like something straight out of a fantasy novel. I've visited countless bookstores, and nothing beats the old vintage feel of this place. They have a great selection of beautiful leather-bound books, plus an excellent fantasy and sci-fi section. I especially love when they put books out in under $6! The prices at this location are better, and this store feels much more like a classic old bookstore. The Campbell location feels more like a modern bookstore, and the prices there can sometimes be higher. At the end of the day, this place is a San Jose landmark and everyone should visit it at least once. Even when I disagree with certain aspects of it, I still keep coming back because it's nostalgic.

Each section was clearly marked, and we both found books to take home. I also found a children's book on the sale table outside. And along with our purchase, we were each able to take one Advance Reader Copy for free. This is a wonderful addition to this shopping district, and there is plenty of free parking in the area.

I don't need a ticker tape parade when I walk in, but a simple hello would be nice.... especially since this space is so small and it feels a little awkward when you walk in, and the other person in the small space doesn't even acknowledge you. I did pick up a book I'd been looking for and was happy that it was also a signed copy! They have a box of ARCs you can take from if you make a purchase, and I did want to grab one, but I felt awkward because of the lack of engagement with the employee. I'll be back to visit again, because it is a cute little spot and they do have a great selection. Hopefully, the next visit is more like my first visit.

They also buy! There's a nicely-stocked kids area, and clean bathrooms as well. Friendly service too. If you're interested in different editions (Easton Press, Illumicrate, FairyLoot, etc.), there's a special section, but sometimes they have them in the regular shelves. While the prices are certainly lower than retail for these editions, they are about on par with what you could find on eBay. Still, it's nice to be able to see and hold the editions first!
