My husband and I made a trip out to Big Bend National Park before the Texas summer heat.....but it…read morewas unfortunately unseasonably hot this year. The dessert was beautiful and the park as a whole was very well taken care of! Old Mine Trail: Since we went around "Spring Break", the parking lot was very busy and spaces were limited. I would recommend downloading the "All Trails" app to gauge how busy the trails are. By 7:30, all the spots in the small parking lot were already taken. The trail itself was very well managed. Although the parking lot was busy, the trail was not bad! We were pretty spaced out between hikers! Take lots of water and snacks! The views up top are spectacular. Star Gazing: We were at Sotol Vista (for panoramic stars). The stars were especially beautiful inside the park because there was no light pollution (aside from the headlights from passing cars down below us).

I once hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and spent a few nights camping down there. While…read moredown there, an elderly man easily every bit of 70 years old asked me if it was my 1st time down at the bottom. I told him that it was and asked him if it was his 1st time. He chuckled and said, "No this is my Sanctuary". After my 3rd visit to Big Bend in 12 years, I think Big Bend may be my sanctuary. Big Bend is in the middle of nowhere. You do not just stumble upon Big Bend; it is a planned destination. You won't find a Gatlinburg like town next to it or an exit sign off the interstate saying 8 miles from here. It's miles from anything. The type of place you don't pass a gas station, and you carry a case of water in the vehicle. We have hiked various trails before and canoed Santa Elena Canyon, but I will focus on the trails we hiked this visit. Note: I have only done day hiking here, so no Insite in this review about backpacking although I would love to at some point. We started off at the visitor's center at Panther Junction as everyone should do in my opinion. Rangers can give you up to the minute updates like telling us the Hot Springs road was still closed because of a flood this past July (2025). She said we could still hike it but it would add an additional 4 miles (2 each way) to our trip. Good Insite. Our 1st hike was a short one in Boquillas Canyon. It was a short 1.4-mile round trip up a small cliff and back down to the Rio Grande river. It was an extremely easy hike that anyone who can walk can do. we then did a forementioned Hot Springs hike. This is a very cool spot with old, abandoned buildings from a time when the area was a resort. There is still a hot spring alongside the river that had people soaking as we walked past. The only downfall of the area was it still hadn't been repaired since the flood, so picnic tables were under sand, and I don't want to tell you what the bathroom looked like. The next day we did the Window Trail and it's a 5.6 miles hike right in the middle of the Chisos Basin. This one was I guess I would call moderate, but I am also an overweight old fart. It's really not bad except if it's hot out because you will be in the direct sun and the small number of switchbacks on your return trip. Other than that, the views are gorgeous. Just don't slide off the rocks at the "window", it's a long way down. The last hike we did was the Grapevine Hill's Trail aka The Balanced Rock. This one is a little more challenging to get to as you have to drive miles down a dirt road that is a little rocky. You don't need a 4-wheel drive, just don't be a speed demon. The hike itself is short, 2.2 miles each way and 95 percent of it is easy. The last little bit is a rock scramble up to see the balanced rock. It is worth it. Amazing views. We had the whole area to ourselves for most of the hike but saw lots of people on the way back so go early. Big Bend is amazing but requires some planning. Don't wing it. Bring lots of water and be smart. Cell service is limited but a lot better than 13 years ago.

It was super convenient- we never even had to face any staff. Our keys were waiting for us at the door (Yes, that's pretty trusting but the location is also a bit hidden as we had to walk down a clean alley to get there) SIMPLE ACCOMMODATIONS Huge plus for having local Coffee at the counter as well as a microwave, mini fridge, and wifi. Also a collection of small snacks for the taking. A simple, sheer curtain divided the living room from the bedroom but also added an elegant feel to the minimalist appearance. Everything was clean and perfect for our stay. AND RATHER SPACIOUS It never felt cramped inside. That sheer curtain also works great, space miracles. They provide snacks, WiFi and a great binder with information. The location is convient to pretty much everything in Alpine ( a lot within walking distance). However, I was extremely dissapointed and annoyed when I received my review back from the Guest Lofts. We came to Alpine to celebrate me turning 21. Im not a big drinker and therefore wanted to travel for my bday. I think my group and I were stereotyped and therefore received a negative review. Apparently we kept a family and their kids up all night long... First off we were on the outside which meant there was only one loft next to us. The first night we stayed there we had just drove 7 hours and didn't stay up past 10. The next morning when we woke up the only people in the loft next to us were one of the ladies that runs the guest lofts cleaning. We were told In the review we were too loud and didn't follow the rules. There is no possible way we kept anyone up all night long. We never stayed up past 12 and didn't wake up until 9. I didn't even finish a four pack of beer and one of the people in my group was sick. The only "kids" I saw were two preteens throwing knives at stuff in the courtyard. I take it Guest Lofts are not a fan of young adults. I think they could have handled the situation better and maybe talked to us in person or let us know there was supposedly someone staying next to us.

Its white stucco façade rises with understated elegance, a study in regional restraint. Step inside, and the Western motif feels neither theatrical nor contrived--it is immersive. The interiors evoke a time when craftsmanship mattered and hospitality was tangible. That sense of authenticity is perhaps most charmingly embodied in the guest experience itself: upon check-in, visitors are handed an actual metal key. No plastic cards. No digital apps. Just the satisfying weight of tradition in your palm. My stay in a Balcony King room revealed generous proportions rarely found in contemporary boutique properties. The suite unfolded into a separate living area, creating a sense of residential calm rather than transient lodging. The design language is minimalist, layered with subtle Southwestern influences with warm tones, and textures that echo the surrounding landscape. The bed offered restorative comfort, while a thoughtful pair of earplugs placed bedside acknowledged Alpine's enduring rail presence. Trains still pass through town in the night, their horns sounding--a reminder that this hotel was born of the tracks and continues to exist in dialogue with them. He went outside, came back with a key and the only 2 words he ever uttered were "cabin 2". Cabin 2 met us with a plunger by the front door. Inside was quite a nightmare. No way to ask for another room as the place was closed at this point. Bathroom door broken--has a gate latch that doesn't close all the way, floors filthy and covered in sticker burrs, spiders in the bathroom, the soaps and shampoos were obviously refilled-not new-and dirty and stuck to the glass shelve. The TV was falling off the wall, there was a hole in the front door and the back of the door was covered in some sort of dirt (bug dirt?). Multiple spider webs in room. The positives were the fridge and microwave were clean and operational, the bed wasn't really comfy but seemed to be clean, and the AC worked. We were immediately looking for other hotel rooms even though we had prepaid for 2 nights. Unfortunately--April in this area is a big time for visiting Big Bend, so there was nothing to be had. We seriously considered sleeping in the truck... The reviews and photos I saw before booking sure look good, but they are very deceptive. Buyer beware!!

Absolutely GORGEOUS place to stay for visiting Big Bend National Park! There are four domes that…read moreare decently spread out from each other (and a larger "casa" somewhere nearby), and I feel like we were very lucky to stay in the Milky Way dome which was the farthest one out so when we sat outside we had an unobstructed view of the gorgeous desert and the mountains in the distance. We were there over New Year's so the weather was amazing and we appreciated getting to soak in the warmth of the firepit as the temperatures dropped at night. There is also a wonderful grill and an outdoor sink that we used to make breakfast every morning and dinner a couple of nights. The water is not drinkable so you MUST bring water (we filled up two 5 gallon carboys from home), but the water works fine to rinse dishes or wash your hands. Another warning, to get to the dome, you will have to drive about 2 miles on an unpaved, dirt road, but it's relatively smooth and you don't need a 4 wheel drive vehicle for it (we managed it in a rented mini-van, which we definitely didn't plan on having to do but it worked). The inside of the dome is very cool. We had two adults and one teenager in the dome and it was an awesome glamping experience! The views out of the dome during daylight are gorgeous, and at night if you turn off all the lights you get some very cool views at night too. However, we did really appreciate the full curtain to cover the windows when we left for the day and when it was time to go to sleep. Definitely recommend keeping the curtains closed when you leave because the windows create a greenhouse effect and it will be HOT inside even if it's not that warm outside. They do have an air conditioner/ heater inside, but you can't leave that running when you're gone or you risk running the solar power down. Since it's a smaller space it did cool down quickly when we got back to the dome in the afternoons / evenings. The beds were comfy, there were plenty of plugs to charge things, and they had a surprisingly nice kitchen setup. A decent sized mini-fridge with a tiny freezer that let us re-freeze our ice packs for our cooler, a keurig, a microwave, and a lot of utensils and plates, plastic glasses and plastic wine glasses. There are also grill tools under the sink outside! There is a bathroom with a door, a little sink, and a standing shower. The only issue with the shower is A) it's not frosted glass, it's clear, which is awkward for a situation where people don't want to see each other naked, and B) the water is brought in so you really need to take VERY short showers. We didn't wash our hair while we were there and just rinsed off quickly if we needed to so we could help protect the water in the area and limit the issue where no one could use the back-half of the dome because of the nakedness lol. The desert outside is also FULL of cool rocks and fossils if you want to go hunting for them! We found a few fossilized dinosaur eggs, fossilized river bed, and some very cool rocks that made my daughter so excited! To summarize, this is an absolutely beautiful place to stay, it's only about an hour to get into Big Bend National Park, and is way more luxurious and comfortable than regular camping. A perfect glamping experience with stellar views that I will recommend to everyone!
