I have mixed feelings about my recent, first visit to Casa Playa. First off, and most importantly the food was very good. I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon. Every bite was full of flavor and ample cheese. The bacon was crispy and delicious. Another nice thing I noticed was the 4% discount for cash. I like the carrot vs. stick approach. Plus the lady working the counter was friendly and attentive. The few things that seemed odd was that they gave me one 2 oz paper cup for their salsa bar that featured at least 6 different salsas. I applaud the use of paper over plastic, but may I suggest giving a few, or just leave the cups next to the salsa and let the patron choose. The salsa was good, but the paper cup started to loose its strength as I used it and refilled it. Another idea is to find some inexpensive, washable mini bowls to use instead. The other slightly odd think was the lack of napkins. I was given a plastic bowl with chips, and then my burrito was delivered to my table when it was ready. Neither was served with napkins. When I looked around for them, I didn't see any so I went to the cashier and asked for some. I was handed one napkin. I'd prefer to get at least one delivered with the chips and/or main food purchase. When back in the area, I'm willing to pay another visit. A nice spot for a quick lunch and affordable tacos! A friend recommended Casa Playa located in Riviera Village for their crunchy tacos. They did not disappoint! They're simple--lettuce shredded cheese, and your choice of protein on a crispy corn tortilla. I got one with shredded chicken and one with pastor, and both were tasty! I also got one of their craft tacos. For the same price, it comes with a soft corn tortilla, avocado crema, pickled red onions, cilantro, and your choice of protein. I got the shredded beef with this one, and I think it went perfectly in a craft taco! They also give you some chips and a couple of cups for salsa. They have a self-serve salsa bar with a variety of different salsas ranging from mild to volcano. I enjoyed the mild salsa and the "Salma Hayek" which has a little heat and a little sweetness to it! I was told this is one of their most popular salsas! It wasn't crowded on a Saturday afternoon, and we got our food pretty quickly. I didn't eat here and only stopped in to grab a few bottled beverages. While I was there, I saw someone preparing food and was honestly disturbed by what I saw. They were grabbing chunks of rice directly off a plate with their bare hands and also scooping salsa with their bare hands. This was during a recent visit. read more

This is a small independent place with a big heart. The owner hires people who care as much as she does about the customer experience. I've never been to a burrito joint where people stop by repeatedly from behind the counter to ask if the food was okay, if you have everything you need, and just generally make it a point to let you know you matter. I think when we ordered nachos, they thought we said nacho soup. With maybe 5 chips sticking out of the top, and maybe 5 chips at the bottom, my 10 chip nacho was more of a stew than a nacho. Heard about this place from a coworker and decided to give it a try. Staff was very friendly and gave great service. I ordered the carne asada deluxe burrito and added green sauce. The green sauce was a bit salty for me and the burrito barely had any meat in it or the meat was shredded so fine it was overwhelmed by the rice and beans. So I didn't taste any meat. He must've dropped the order, or it fell over, but it was a MESS. Sauce everywhere, dripping bags, mushed food mixed together and unrecognizable. The couple that owned this restaurant are always friendly and have great staff. The food is made fresh to order, the chips and salsa was excellent. I love thin, freshly made tortilla chips and here they give you the whole tortilla fried to break apart yourself. The tacos always have excellent Carne Asada that it's very flavorful can't say enough about this great place and they have a points program that gets you discounts. Alethea, the owner and manager of this small family-owned business, was so kind and thoughtful! The food (everything was terrific) was prepared as fresh as possible, and the meats, chicken, and pork were cooked and seasoned lightly to perfection. I highly recommend the barbeque pork sandwich and the Tacos Carnitas Street-style, packed with meat and fresh guacamole, and the Caesar salad, made with very fresh and crispy lettuce and a delicious dressing. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the terrific choice of salsas; there is something suitable for everyone, from velvet to dragon tongues!
