We stopped in for a quick dinner on a Thursday night. We came early for dinner around 4:15. They were closing the restaurant at 5 for a private dinner but graciously allowed us to come in and served us an amazing dinner. We had empanadas of beef which were really good and served with two different sauces, one spicy and one mild. Here it is a few weeks later and I'm finally writing the review.....and I'm also still thinking about the absolutely delicious dinner I got. I ordered the Birria tacos and they did not disappoint. The broth is absolutely amazing and you can just drink it in a cup so good. Hubby had the tacos but my birrias were better hands down! We finished the dinner with a nice hot serving of Mexican hot chocolate. Creamy with a tiny kick!!!!! The staff is friendly and welcoming and the restaurant is simply appointed and comfortable. My Wife and I love Mexican Food so our SIL took us to Casa Ortega after a Sunday afternoon Art-walk. We were starved and couldn't wait to try something delicious. After reviewing a couple Yelp photos and getting some recommendations from my SIL I decided on the Asada Torta no black beans, My Wife had the Quesabirria Tacos and my SIL went with the Chicken Torta (fried chicken cutlet). A draft Modela for me and a Paloma for my SIL. Service was a bit slow.. maybe a bit more than a bit, but not long enough that we were hangry. Beer was served in a chilled glass and the Paloma presentation was really cute. We were given complimentary chips and salsa. Both were yummy. The Tortas are gigantic and served with fries or a salad. Out of both, I think I preferred the chicken Torta. The Quesabirria Tacos were the star of this show and I'll be back for those pronto. Overall we loved their food. The Restrooms were clean and we lucked up on a great spot on the street for parking. We frequently eat at this place and it is our favorite Mexican restaurant. This is the first time we went for taco Tuesday and we were not disappointed. $4-$5 tacos and great drink specials. We each had 4 different tacos and all were delicious. We sat at the bar due to the place being packed. Our bartender Myra was awesome. I'm not quite sure how she kept up with all the food and drinks but she did. If you want a less crowded experience you should probably go Wednesday or Thursday since it is a small place until the outdoor dining area opens. Near the Market Street roundabout you will find a quant little restaurant named Casa Ortega. The restaurant has on the street parking and a cute outdoor patio that has plenty of seating and a tent to provide shade from the sun or protection from the rain. We were seated immediately. We ordered our margaritas. We each ordered a glass of, but they also offer pitchers and that will probably be what we order in the future. The margarita was clean and refreshing. I would definitely come here just for a nightcap as well. I ordered the Pibil which I devoured. The meat was delicate, flavorful, and hit the spot. It came with a cactus salad that has become a favorite and I will definitely order again. My friend had the carnitas and said they were amazing. The vibe hits you as soon as you walk in: sombreros on the walls, vintage photos--including one from 1938 of a Mexican woman labeled "proprietor"--and a warm, laid-back energy that makes you feel like you're in someone's home, not just a restaurant. I went for the Carnitas, and my wife had the Pork Pibil--both dishes hit the mark. The meat was tender, flavorful, and clearly made with love, not just reheated from a tray. The Carnitas stole the show for me though, especially with that housemade habanero sauce and the five corn tortillas that came with it. Not nuked in a microwave--these were grilled right, with those little charred spots that tell you someone's doing things the old-school way. We both had margaritas too. At $13 a pop, they were good--strong, fresh, not too sweet--but we did the math halfway through and realized we should've just gone with the $52 pitcher. Next time. The guac was creamy and legit, the salsa was bright and fresh, and the whole meal just felt solid across the board. Only complaint? The black beans with my wife's dish didn't do it for us. We're used to refried pinto beans that are creamy and rich--these felt more like filler than flavor. One cool/weird bit of history: the building used to be home to Artie's Box Seat Pub, which, let's just say, had a bit of a reputation. Word is it was known for shady dealings, and the owner, Artie, reportedly choked on a chicken wing one night. A responding officer (possibly a state trooper, but it might've been local PD) tried to save him, but it didn't end well. Wild story, and honestly, it makes the transformation into a cozy Mexican spot that much more interesting. Wappingers Falls has seen a lot over the years--it used to have 40 saloons and 20 factories back in the day--and it's nice to see a place like Casa Ortega bringing something fresh and honest to the neighborhood. While the food here is A1 the staff lacked hospitality. The hostess was rude. Tables were ample and she first turned us away when we stated we had no reservation on a Tuesday at 4 pm!!! When I pointed out all of the empty tables she offered us a table outside. Only because it was a beautiful day we agreed. The portions are small and the prices are high. The food is authentic and delicious and you will definitely want more. Most Mexican restaurants offer three tacos on a plate, their's has two. They totally changed the traditional tres leches cake by adding garnishes of strawberry syrup and mixed fresh berries. It no longer tastes like tres leches when you add that. It is good but not tres leches. I would've preferred they ask me if I would like that before adding those garnishes. Eating outside was not as pleasing as expected. The tables were wooden picnic tables as you would find at a park and there were a few ants crawling on them once the food was served so I found myself slapping ants off my arm. Or maybe it was always around but just like when you get a new car, it feels like everyone has now gotten one. Well Casa Ortega is not just "another one". The quesabirria tacos are easily the best I've ever had. Crunchy tortilla shell filled with ooey gooey Oaxaca cheese and the most tender short ribs imaginable. The salsa kick is the cherry on top. As great as that sounds, it tastes even better! I wish I could say I can't wait to try the other menu items but honestly speaking, that'll never happen. We found this authentic Mexican restaurant by accident. We made a wrong turn. What a fortunate wrong turn. First off, it's not in a strip mall! It's in a quiet neighborhood off Main St. near the waterfall. The venue is inviting, the menu uncomplicated, only top shelf tequilas, the staff is very pleasant, everything is immaculately clean, even the restrooms are remarkably impeccable. What appears to be the usual chips and salsas are brought to the table. it's in appearance only, the tortilla chips taste freshly made, and the two salsas red and green have a little kick. I tried the tacos al pastor. Al pastor is similar to schwarma or gyro meat, served on a soft tortilla. Comes with a side of yellow rice and thick black beans. What really surprised me was how truly flavorful the corn tortillas tasted and the amazingly delicious beans were. It brings back memories of dining in CDMX a few years ago. My partner had the small seafood soup. The broth was bursting with seafood flavor then there was all the seafood and fish in it! It comes with a few corn tortillas. Mussels, shrimp, octopus, fish you name it and it was in there. She could only finish half. I used her tortillas to make rice and bean tacos from my plate. I was looking at the tortillas they didn't have that little rim on them. The way commercial ones do. Maybe they are homemade in the kitchen. We were driving around Wappinger Falls and getting to know the area when we stumbled on this restaurant which is located in the corner of a small street. From the outside it look like an ordinary restaurant in a small town. You are about to be pleasantly surprised! The staff is friendly., extremely nice and accommodating. A group of us go to the theater nearby and have been stopping here for lunch or brunch for years. Was always an excellent experience, but the most recent was such a disappointment. Seems the menu has changed, possibly a different chef. It feels like they're trying to go upscale and are charging more while offering less. No complementary chips and salsa anymore. The dipping broth was spicy and complimented the overstuffed tacos. Every dunk was crispy and cheesy, Smokey, spicy. It was a chore by the time taco 3 hit my mouth. It was so much food but I just had to get to the end. The stuffed churros with home made vanilla ice cream was a perfect treat to a super meal. The churros were crispy, hot, tasted fresh and not overly fried. The ice cream was creamy and so fresh with the vanilla. The bar tender was the waitress and she was so helpful and nice. Friends said I needed to come to Casa Ortega for the "best Mexican food". Well in our area we have many good Mexican restaurants, so this was going to be difficult... Inside is loud!!! Extremely loud - I needed to repeat myself to my friend several times during dinner. I would highly suggest sitting outside. Chips are served when you are seated, but no salsa..? They give you two sauces to dip tue chips in, very odd. The menu is also a bit odd... on its face you see burgers and other American dishes, we questioned if we were at a Mexican restaurant (flip the menu over and you'll find tacos and such). Guac was just ok, nothing special. My dinner, short rib tacos were very greasy. I also found them to be extremely salty. I did have one of my friends chicken tacos and found them to be better. I wish I could give Casa Ortega 2.5 stars honestly, but due to the noise, odd menu and grease I cannot reccomend this as a good local Mexican restaurant. read more

The home made chips were delicious, a pity there was no salsa to dip them in, just some light green salsa. Now for the main courses. I had the QuesaBirria tacos, 3 corn tortillas filled with braised short ribs meat and some delicious Mexican spices, cheese, onions, cilantro, literally fingers licking good as you dipped them into the side of beef stew. My friend had the chicken Enchiladas with salsa verde, she loved them so much that she wanted to lick the plate. The Quesadillas, you have a choice of corn or flour tortillas, also a great dish. As per the service, our waitress Jenny could not have been any more professional and attentive, she was on top of her game.
