This is why the 3 of us stopped here on the way to Vegas tonight: Me: Do you guys want to stop for dinner on the way? Friend #1 & #2: Yes! Me: What do you guys feel like? Friend #1: Tommy's! Me: Ok, lets shoot a little higher than that. Thanks to my trusty Yelp app, we had some pretty good food, right off the freeway, and didn't have to submit to Tommy's : D. The ample, free parking in their lot made me happy, and the casual family-friendly atmosphere was a good road food vibe. We were seated immediately, even before we could fully take in the dozens of taxidermy specimens around the place. Chips and salsas came out fast; drinks and our food came out just as fast: Me: Shrimp & Avocado Salad ($8.95) - romaine lettuce, cucumbers, tomato slices, avocado slices, black olives, jack cheese and lots of shrimp on my big plate, with ranch on the side. This was nice serving of protein, even if the avocado wasn't the ripest. Me: Side of carnitas ($3.95) - crispy chunks of pork, meaty but a little dry. Friend #1: Steak Fajitas ($13.95) - a sizzling platter of marinated steak, bell peppers, onions and tomatoes, served with a plate of rice, refried beans, guac, sour cream and salad. Huge portions, and obviously a popular dish because we smelled and heard a bunch of these come out of the kitchen while we were there. Friend #2: Chili Verde Burrito, enchilada style ($4.95) - chunks of pork in a huge green sauced burrito, served with refried beans. Not overly flavorful but a huge portion for the money. Friend #2: Margarita ($7) - my friend was unimpressed with this bottled mix-based, watered down margarita. The thin chips and slightly bland red and green salsas failed to impress us, but service was good and fast and I got my protein fix, so I'd still pick this over Tommy's for a Vegas road trip pit stop any day! read more

Casa Jimenez is the most authentic Mexican restaurant that I have found in the High Desert this far. I knew that I would love this place just from the chips and salsa. It's super fresh and tasty every time! I like to try something new each time I visit. Some of the items that I love are the machaca, enchiladas, carne asada tacos, chilaquiles, chile rellenos, and the breakfast burritos.I am also a fan of their michelada and margaritas! Jimenez always seems to have a special when we visit, but even the regular prices are great! Food and service are always excellent! Dead animals and so much more! I stopped here with my dad on our way home from Laughlin. The only reason he came here was the fact it was this, fast food, or nothing. Plus after all that driving I needed a beer. (Don't drink and drive kids.) From the outside Casa Jimenez looks like any other Mexican restaurant but once you enter you are greeted by more stuffed critters than you can shake a stick at. I mean they are everywhere! On the walls, on the ceiling, and just standing around the room. Really shows you the reality of where your food comes from. And talk about awkward try eating carnitas when you are sitting across from a mounted boars head that keeps staring at you with its dead glass eyes. Maybe I'm a weirdo but I found it funny. And I almost fell off my chair when I help up my fork and said, "Yeah I'm eating your cousin. What are YOU going to do about it.") Ahhh I'm a dork. But the food was very good. My pork burrito was stuffed with plenty of meat and fresh veggies. The texture was perfect, crispy around the edges yet tender. Quality that isn't easy to find in many places. The bowl of albondigas was huge easily shared by two people. My dads chicken taquitos also looked great but he had no intention of sharing so I didn't push the subject. And they also had BEER!!! Awful service. We had to flag a server down. After taking our order we never saw him except for when we got our food. It took longer than what it should to order, get your food, and get the check. Food was OK. I've had better tortas. The food wasn't anything worth pulling over for, the restaurant is just in a really convenient spot for business. Trust me there are better Mexican restaurants in SoCal. Prices are fair. The decor is weird. I guess if you love Cabelas you'll love this place. read more

We weren't too sure about this place when driving through and hungry for lunch. It has quite a collection of taxidermy. Clearly someone is a hunter. We were waffling then saw the food that was delivered to several other diners. So we sat. The food was amazing. Really. Very nice servers too. We had Horchata. Yum. Steak salad and a totally stuffed steak burrito. We weren't hungry for dinner that evening when we got to our destination. The bathrooms were being worked on when we were there. One was open, not great. That is the one thing they must improve. Lots of others have commented on this. read more

I'm REALLY tempted to give Casa Jimenez a one, but the food was just too delicious for me to do so. Why, you may ask? Scroll down if you want to know. For now, on to the food: As we were greeted, we were served chips and salsa, a typical at any place. The salsa was probably the BEST salsa I've ever had. It tasted like someone made it right before we walked in. So fresh and full of flavour, unlike the crappy jarred up salsa you find at most places. I ordered the Venison and Shrimp Fajitas, which came with a plate of rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salad. The fajitas were sizzling hot and came in a HUGE portion. If only I knew this, I would've shared with a friend who happened to get the same exact dish. The venison was very tender, just how it should be, and you could definitely taste the marinade. The shrimp were pretty well sized and were also quite tasty as well. The entire combination of the fajitas and the side dishes went great together, especially wrapped up in a taco. No complaints at all, and would definitely recommend the dish to others. Now here's where I got pissed. When we got the bill, we couldn't believe our eyes. The fajitas plate cost a whopping $34.99. You've gotta be fucking kidding me. I realize that I probably should have asked beforehand, since the prices for the fajitas weren't on the menu. However, I never thought it would total up to such an astonishing amount. Yes, venison and shrimp are expensive and venison itself is rare to come by at a restaurant, but that price is just insane. In conclusion, don't get the fajita plate unless you're planning to share it, have expensive taste and don't mind spending, or just have a huge wallet. Crazy good Mexican food. Lots of animals all over the place. Really enjoyed the carnitas burrito with red sauce. I dumped the salsa from the chips on top and it was so good. Stppped by from Las Vegas with family. I got pancakes, hashbrowns, and eggs. Pancakes were charred and so were the hashbrowns. It was 9am, only thing I've eaten, 30 minutes later stayed on the toilet almost as long as it took to get my food. Would never reccomend. read more

The service was just okay and the food was about the same. I'm not sure what kind of salsa there was with the chips but I didn't care for it at all. The portions of food were generous but there wasn't much cheese in my cheese enchiladas. Last thing before I left I saw a dead roach in the bathroom (which could really use some work besides the bug) and that probably didn't help my final thoughts on the place. This mexican joint is off of 15 in Barstow. You might end up here if you miss the mc donalds exit on your way back to LA from Vagas and don't want to go back an exit, but you're hungry. Two things that catch the attention immediately, the great service and the stuffed animals; taxidermy not teddy. That's the good part. I'm very sad to say the con was the food. I will never go back. I bought a dozen oysters and after my husband and son ate about 2 or 3, my husband started to get sick. Turns out the majority of the oysters were bad, decomposed, rotten. I called the restaurant and the lady who had dispatched me told me to bring them back. when I get there, to my surprise, she counted the oysters and asked why did we eat them instead of apologizing for selling bad oysters. she did return the money but at the end of the day, safety comes first. Stopped in here on the way to Vegas. The decor is unique, stuffed amd mounted animals from someone's hunting trips. My main concern was a huge pile of dust going to drop down onto my plate of food or one of the many dead flies drop off the window sill into my lap. The salsa that came with the chips and salsa was bland. I got scrambled eggs and hash browns, hoping for the best. They had mixed it with some sort of cheese and tomato mixture, was not described on the menu. The restroom was nasty. Men's room had no paper towels. We stopped in for breakfast to go. The place is so eclectic it amazed me. If you don't like dead animals, don't stop here. However if you like really outstanding Mexican food, this is your place. We ordered the machaca burrito. It was really really good. Their homemade salsa's are good. The hit one is outstanding. The flavor is really good. The heat is a slow burn, a flavorful slow burn. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! DO NOT EAT HERE First, a little backstory: Some family had moved away and we used to love coming here. We always remembered how good the food was. That part of the family finally was able to move back to this area and really looked forward to eating here, they waited three years to eat here again! I'm sorry to say we will never come back to this restaurant after the following experience. 1st: We arrived and waited to be seated, we waited a good 10 minutes before anyone even noticed we were there, we had to flag someone down to seat us. 2nd: The waitress showed us a booth, but asked if we'd prefer a bigger seat. We said yeah and moved toward the corner seat. She said she had to wipe the table down first and she ran back to the kitchen. We waited another 10 minutes for her to come back (awkwardly standing in the middle of the restaurant). She comes back and serves food to other guests!! SHE FORGOT WE WERE WAITING FOR HER TO CLEAN THE TABLE 3rd: We FINALLY get to sit down and get some menus. We order and receive our food after waiting quite a while (keep in mind the restaurant was not packed by any means). We finally get to eating and my family member finds PART OF A PLASTIC BAG IN HER SOUP. WTF 4th: We had to flag down the waitress (cause god knows she wasn't checking up on us) and told her about the soup. She apologized and said we won't have to pay for the soup (shoot we shouldn't have to pay for the whole damn meal in my opinion). We requested another soup but this time "to-go" since we're already finishing up eating. She says she'll be back with boxes. 5th: She assists other tables and finally brings us our boxes with the check. She hands my family member a container for the contaminated soup and says sorry. SHE EXPECTED US TO TAKE HOME THE PLASTIC BAG SOUP!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I told her this was not what we wanted, we wanted a NEW soup in a to-go container so we can get the hell out of there. She finally brought out the new soup with our check AND THEY CHARGED US FOR THE SOUP. Are you effing kidding me?! At this point we were so frustrated we just wanted to leave asap.
