Driving from San Diego to Las Vegas, my friend and I started hearing that all-too-familiar rumble in our stomachs. We still had about 200 miles to go, and all that was left in the car was coconut water and a few pretzels--not exactly a satisfying meal! I opened Yelp to see what Barstow had to offer, and Chelas Y Carnitas immediately caught my eye. I'm so glad we made the stop. The food was incredibly fresh and tasted like it was made from scratch--which I believe it was. Every bite of our wet, chicken burrito and steak burrito with everything in it, was delicious. Made this stop before heading back to the bay from Vegas. Really homey spot love the ambiance of Mexican culture. We were greeted walking in and placed our order at the register before seating. We didn't wait too long for our food my hubby got the menudo and definitely love how the menudo came in a Mexican bowl very authentic oh and by the way it comes with homemade tortillas . The taquitos were so crunchy and delicious I got them with carnitas and my son got a burrito and for the size of it it's pretty big. We ordered the Barria tacos which were one of the absolute BEST versions we have had while traveling ever. We highly recommend eating here. Road trip and want Mexican?! Look no further! This place did not disappoint! The meat and the quality of their home made tortillas and food was on point! I devoured their gordita! Their carnitas taco was soft and crunchy! I hesitated on getting carnitas on my gordita only because I'm always a little nervous on trying out a new place. But if you like carnitas get the gordita with it! But i will say their asada was also just as delicious! That taco melted in my mouth in the best possible way! Their homes made tortillas were not too thick, they were sooo soft and delicious! Their flan was sooo good! I tried both. They also have raspados and other snacks on their menu. He also added rice, beans, and flan to round out his meal. I got the Chicken Enchiladas with salsa verde and they were sooo good! I also ordered Menudo and that alone can feed a family. It arrived with super tender tripe, rich broth, cilantro, onions, and lime and handmade tortillas. I ate it for days and didn't get tired of it. I was driving back from Laughlin with my family and we were really hungry. I was really looking forward to having breakfast and was disappointed that they didn't have a breakfast menu. So instead I had the carnitas enchilada, wife had the carne asada wet burrito, oldest had a pastor torta, kids had a bean burrito. I gotta admit that the food was great! We were all happy and sampling what each of us had. The only disappointment was the super cheap plastic fork and knife that I had to eat with. Found a great new pit stop on the way to and from Vegas. Mom had the chile relleno plate, wife has sopes al pastor, and I had two carnitas and one carne asada taco. WOW! Everything was as good or better than anything we've had, and we have some really good Mexican food back home. Even the horchata was excellent. Coffee was instant, and they give you a large mug of hot water and a jar of Nescafe Clasico, in the glass jar from Mexico, which is the best. Great idea cuz you can make it to your taste. I went to Chelas y Carnitas thinking I would have a beer and some good food. Unfortunately they don't serve beer. I asked the guy at the counter, "why is it called Chelas y carnitas but you don't serve beer?" He said that Chela is his mother in law. The place is a hole in the wall but their food is awesome. I had an al pastor Gordita which is one of my top two gorditas now. My buddy had an al pastor burrito and according to him it was amazing. We didn't even miss the beer. Because we went elsewhere and had a beer. I tell you what though. I would go out of my way to have more food here. Their food is so good. Better than some of the places I've been to in LA. Have a few beers and then go get some food here and then go back and have some more beers at the other place just like I did. I loved it. read more

We ordered the Carne/pollo (burritos), pastor/pollo/carnitas/carne (tacos), and Chicharrones. The burritos were decent, not very memorable. The pastor tacos were the highlight of our meal, very flavorful! The chicken tacos have a weird taste to them sadly. The carnitas were dry and missing flavor.
