El Coqui Food Truck - Mofongo with chicharron de pollo the Best

We haven't had a Puerto Rican restaurant in Indy for awhile and I was so excited when a friend told…read moreme they'd heard about El Coqui from a friend of a friend. First of all, it's no where you'd normally be passing- you'll have to look for it and go with purpose. Second of all, it's fairly priced and the menu is varied (& hand written on a chalkboard!). Third of all, it seems to be family owned (my impression anyway). We tried several things and everything was delicious. I had the mofongo with pork but immediately wished I'd ordered shrimp when i saw my friends dish! We also had an appetizer from the case at the counter and some drinks. The place is deceiving from the outside (I grew a little concerned stepping over dirty diapers on the street haha) but inside is super cute! Park on the street (it's primarily residential) and prepare for it to be hot. It could have just been the day I was there but it was 95° outside and that felt cooler (because of the slight breeze) than the restaurant. I was literally dripping sweat and had to get a napkin to wipe my forehead constantly. I guess another option is ordering to-go! Anyway, I will definitely be back and have already recommended it to several friends- I hope El Coqui is very successful!

The ambience is festive and fun. The server recommended the pork chunks. I was skeptical, due to most of my other experiences with pork chunks being dry and sub-par. Well, these pork chunks changed my whole perspective. They were tender beyond belief and so, so flavorful. Perfectly fatty and salty. He also recommended the white rice with stewed beans. I don't know how or why that rice was so amazing, but it was seriously the best we've ever tasted. Insanely good. Again, I don't know exactly what stewed beans entails- other than deliciousness. I tried their mofongos, which I had never eaten before. I love plantains, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. It was so unique, and paired perfectly with their house sauce. We also got their "The Triple" sandwich- once again a recommended menu item. Again, we were amazed. The idea of plantains being used as bread for a sandwich was new to me, but worked really well. All in all, a truly five-star experience. Every dish blew us away. I'm already missing their pork, rice, and beans. And if I'm never able to go back, I guess I'll revisit when I die, since I'm convinced this is what heaven tastes like.

The water brought bottles of their "house" sauce, as well a spicy sauce which was a somewhat sweet and savory blend... excellent as well. Also had the passion fruit drink, sweet and tangy...refreshing on a 90 degree day. My wife had a Taino with pork. She said it was very good. The restaurant was smallish with some outdoor seating. Very clean and PR welcoming. This place is worth going out of the way for. Very satisfying!

I ordered the Enchilado de Camarones with fried sweet plantains and Moro rice. The shrimp are prepared in a Cuban Creole sauce with mild spices. The fried plantains tasted sweet and awesome. I loved the spices in the rice and beans. My meal was delicious. My husband ordered Pan con Lechon (pork sandwich) with fries. The sandwich was huge filled of flavorful pork and pickles. He loved the taste of the soft Cuban roll. Our server, Brenda, was friendly and super attentive. She kept our waters filled and checked on us a couple times. Food came out quickly and hot! The dining room is colorful, super clean with relaxing Cuban guitar music playing overhead. We enjoyed our lunch and recommend highly.

The food is absolutely delicious. I personally love their pork dishes and the beef empanada for an appetizer. The moro rice as well as the yellow rice are both so tasty. I prefer the sweet plantains over the tostones, but that's just my preference. And don't forget to indulge in a dessert or maybe a Cuban coffee after your meal. I tend to bring my foodie group here regularly and while they are a picky bunch, I have not heard any complaints about the food here. The prices are still very reasonable and the service friendly.

We sat upstairs in their covered patio with fans (even cooler, when it began to rain the plastic covering kept us dry). I enjoyed the carriage house margarita with a tahini rim. Others raved about the queso, lamb, and chorizo. I loved the number of options and all the delicious sauces. Our server was phenomenal. She took great care of us during the evening. We also were visited by the manager and treated kindly for visiting. So happy to experience this restaurant! Reservations recommended. Indoor and patio seating, and can be great for groups.

This is definitely the kind of place you go with a group so everyone can sample each other's plates, or a place you keep coming back to so you can try something new every time. My only small regret was not swapping the refried beans for black beans with the chilaquiles, but that's just personal preference. Super friendly staff, great service, and really cool decor made the whole experience even better.

Between my two visits, I got the vegan arepa, Venezuelan breakfast plate, tres leches cake cup, and regular and horchata matcha lattes. The vegan arepa was very tasty. It was a little difficult to eat because the arepa was sliced so thinly that it didn't look sturdy enough to pick up, but it was too crispy to easily cut through with a fork and knife. Still delicious though. I had meant to order with the pink sauce but forgot to specify and got what I think was the guasacaca instead, but it was so good that I didn't really mind. The Venezuelan plate was the right balance of simple and flavourful. Great acai bowl. Tres leches was very sweet, but I enjoyed it, and it was a nice individual portion. The regular matcha latte was pretty good, however the horchata was so sweet that I thought it somewhat overpowered the matcha in the horchata latte. I also tried the açai bowl and fresh-squeezed OJ that my family ordered, and would also highly recommend both of those! Whether you're visiting for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there's a ton of variety including Venezuelan, Mexican, other Latin American, and USAmerican dishes, and some vegetarian and vegan options. The atmosphere is cool with the fake plants on the ceiling, and they had fun Latin music on. The waitress we had both times was friendly and professional, and the food was reasonably quick to come out. Recommended for something different in Bloomington!
