Out in the semi-boonies; but not really far from home, we had skipped lunch and were hungry. There's not much along Highway 67 south of Cedar Hill. Or so we thought. We were wrong. There is a delightful Mexican restaurant in old downtown Venus off the highway called Casa Jacaranda. It's bright, fresh, comfortable and houses a bakery, too! With an original cast iron storefront, original brick interior walls and high ceilings with crisply turning ceiling fans, we were very pleased to have found such a pleasant place, new to us. I was unable to find a menu for me to hold to read though. There was a temporary menu posted on glass that was waist height and one way up high on black board. Neither of which was the best plan for these eyes. I definitely couldn't see street tacos anywhere with meat choices or prices; but she acknowledged they had them. We worked it out. They have a much broader menu than tacos, of course. If you go to their website, you can check it out; but their brunch menu isn't there and some other items, too. They do have have shrimp in addition to the usual line up of street taco choices. My husband ordered Barbacoa Tacos and I chose Pork and Picadillo with Rice and Beans. I ordered Guacamole for us to share. They don't serve complimentary salsa and chips; but I can tell you their chips are exceptional - large flour triangles and fresh to order. They brought a salsa trio to the table - ranchera, salsa verde and a blow your mind chile de arbol. We have not been dining in and had it not been for a totally empty restaurant at 3:30 in the afternoon, we would not have. Aside from a to go order, they remained empty until just before we left. It was a big place with good circulation and we sat well away from the kitchen. The Barbacoa was exceptional, according to my spouse. He adored the chile de arbol salsa. My Picadillo was very good with tender little diced potatoes. The Pork I found to be slightly chewy. However, I so enjoyed the tortillas, spanish rice and beans. Just delicious. I preferred the Salsa Verde - earthy and spicy but not too spicy. The guac was good - a nice sized portion for $4. I noticed a tortilla machine in back, so I guess they make their own. They only use corn tortillas for the small street tacos. Flour tacos are used for carne asada and larger fajitas. The manager and her staff were very enthusiastic and pleasant. We didn't buy any pastries or dessert; but we'll be back. Everything was spotless. The bathroom was spotless. (Someone is a Frida fan). The restaurant is closed on Mondays and open for Brunch, Sundays 11 - 3. Street parking. read more

So far best Mexican cuisine i have found in DFw. The hot sauces are what make the flavor, and they are all made fresh in house. Breakfast served all day, juevos a la mexicana is awesome, and the belgian waffle with berries is amazing. Street tacos are ON POINT! Like i said sauces make it happen. Molcajete (dk green), and avocado are mild/medium, and the red sauce is spicy but excellent flavor not just spice. Their flan is also great, and they have other deserts and pastries too. I think this place may have new ownership - they sure aren't as accommodating as they used to be. I used to always order the fajita plate but exchange both the rice AND beans for guacamole. Guess ya can't do that anymore. So it's $12.99 for the fajita plate. $2.95 for chips and salsa and 3.50 for 3 Tablespoons of guacamole. Seriously 3 little balls of guac like they used a melon baller. Let me start by saying, i love the food and have been coming to the Venus location for a few years almost religiously. The past two times i went including today for Sunday brunch, there were children doing most everything behind the counter. I would guess age range was 10-15 of the three kids that were handling the entire front of the house? This in and of itself isnt an issue, but it took about 30 mins to get our food, one persons came out as a wrong order which then took another 20 mins to get her food so that By the time it finally arrived the rest of us were done. We then ordered Pozole to go and it Took another 25 mins to put that together? Again, the food is wonderful...but they need AN adult running the front of the house who isn't flustered with every order. I hope the owners will at least work with these kids more rather than hang them out to dry on a very busy Sunday. read more

We made the drive from the Mid Cities today to Venus. The Casa was jumping today at noon. A full house with a line of close to a dozen patrons waiting to order. I was happy for the time as it gave me time to study the chalkboard menu. Based on recommendations we had read, the Secretary of the Interior wanted to try the chicken fajita huarache. As CJ is cooking authentic Mexican food I wanted to try the cheese enchiladas with the salsa verde and the chicken enchilada with mole sauce. I am intrigued by mole sauce but my few experiences with it in the past left me kinda, meh. This is without a doubt the best ever and quite enjoyable. But I am still not a huge fan. As for the chicken enchilada the shredded chicken was quite dry and not altogether enjoyable. But I really enjoyed the cheese enchiladas and the salsa verde served with the cheese enchiladas is terrific. However, for someone like me the heat level is four napkins. LOL. Had me sweating like a race horse. Loved it. We liked both the salsa roja and salsa verde served with the chips, but were partial to the verde which is different from the verde on the enchiladas. We are happy with BYOB as it affords us the opportunity to bing our fav beer and wine. This is a very cool venue in the corner building of the one old downtown street of buildings in Venus. It's the real deal. We're gonna visit the new Mansfield location next. read more

Another stellar visit to this amazing place! This time, a chile relleno and tostada plate for lunch, followed by a large assortment to go from the most incredible little in house bakery you have ever seen! Both dishes were really great, along with spectacular guacamole and salsas. We will have to wait until later to rate the bakery haul, but the chocolate chip cookie will most likely not make it home. This place is worth the trip from Dallas or Fort Worth, and more people seem to be finding out about it! Came back to Casa Jacaranda for a Cinco de Mayo lunch. Tostadas were excellent, and the Beef Fajita Huarache was fantastic! Few chefs would be brave enough to name a dish after a shoe, but this one is a revelation. The thick corn tortilla base is intended to represent the thick sole of the shoe. Topped with beef, beans, shredded lettuce and cheese, it is an epic feast! The guacamole, chips, and salsa are a great way to get started. I never get tired of coming to this place, and I'm pretty sure I have now enjoyed everything on the menu! I love the way they moved the amazing bakery counter up to the front, but now, I can't resist those little chocolate cookies. read more

I was super skeptical about this place as well but YOU HAVE TO EAT HERE. It's somewhat located in the middle of nowhere. We drove through a lot of farmland to get here while driving south from Dallas, but it was worth driving nine miles off the highway to eat here. We came here at around nine am for breakfast. There were only two other parties in the restaurant when we ate. They don't serve lunch until ten am, but they serve breakfast all day. Super authentic food with a cute atmosphere. We ordered the huevos rancheros, the chilaquiles, and the huevos a la mexicana with chorizo. All were amazing. The chilaquiles comes on chips which I wasn't expecting, but still tasted great. There was just the right amount of spicy. There are also vegetarian options for many of the dishes which they indicate on the menu. If you have the chance to stop by here, definitely come.
