Soaking wet spring evening in Newark after shopping at the Mills at Jersey Gardens. Stopped in at this local Newark Spanish specialist for Saturday dinner and was very pleased that we did. Our server Steven was born in Spain, then lived in the USA, Italy and Ecuador. Now, at the young age of 18, he already is a seasoned traveler. Steven recommended the house rioja which paired well with our courses. We enjoyed 3 tapas, the crab cakes, the octopus and the shrimp in garlic sauce (details in the photo captions). For our entree, we had the seafood paella which was well prepared with fresh clams, mussels, chorizo, small squid, shrimp, a large prawn and half a lobster. The rice was cooked perfectly, still firm, not soggy. For dessert we enjoyed the creamy cheesecake and tiramisu-like butterscotch pastry. The cortados were also rich and creamy. I stopped by here and ordered the Langosta (broiled lobster with crabmeat stuffing) for take-out. It was on the smaller side, but delicious nonetheless. I even liked the grilled corn, carrots, and chips that came with it. I saw many different tapas that I wanted to try, but didn't the get chance to. I think it's best if you come with a large group, so everyone can try a variety of dishes. Note: The restaurant is located in a residential area with limited parking, and it's especially difficult on street cleaning days. So come with an empty stomach and a full parking plan. read more

Hey Foodies, took me a few months to get this one up here on Yelp, but I'm all caught up. Casa d'Paco is a great place for you to try out. My grandfather comes from the same region of Spain as the owner's dad so I am familair with a lot of these dishes. Bit keep in mind the menu covers most of the regions of Spain. Located in the middle of a residential street, parking is tough, but do a little research as there are plenty of inexpensive ( or free) parking lots in this part of the city. When we went. the main restaurant was still closed ( assuming still due to Covid). However they have an extensive "outdoor area" ( old driveway & garages?) that are covered ( walls too). Decor is as ok as you can get under the situations. Plenty of staff, our waiter was "ok", nuff said. They have Happy Hour drink specials. However, IMO, these drinks are not as strong as when you pay full price. I had a few margaritas and didn't even catch a buzz! :( THE FOOD---very big menu, but when there is a tapas ( small plates) menu, we like to try them & share a lot and drink. We tried many of the dishes you see at most tapas bars + a few other things....all of these were tried and liked \ loved. --Presa Ibérica : grilled thin sliced Iberian fresh pork shoulder topped with Spanish pimentón ; In case you didn't know, Iberian pork is some of the best on the planet ( even in cured form, many think it's better than Italian prosciutto or the standard Spanish Serrano ham) --Chorizo Criollo con chimichurri --grilled Galician sausage w. potatoes in the house chimichurri sauce. --Croquetas de jamón iberico--Iberian ham croquettes ( a staple that EVERY Spanish place should make well) --Pulpo a galega--Galician style octopus served with paprika and olive oil ( a must try & presented very well here) --Aguacate relleno--half avocado shell stuffed with crabmeat, shrimp, minced onion, egg whites and in-house made mayo ( I try this at almost every Spanish or Cuban restaurant I see it at. I appreciate that the owner spices things up with new gastronomical ideas, and keeps the home crowd favorites. About the atmosphere and staff. It's a nice cozy place. There is no avoiding me looking asian, but it dismays me that some people are accusing this place of racism. I received none of that with me and my party. I've been to this restaurant a good five times throughout the years and the staff never made me feel uncomfortable or out of place. I have even got drinks on the house when on a less crowded day. I suggest we avoid any misunderstandings. I can see where the staff may not be 100% ready and slower due to peak hours. Just be nice about your expectations. It's a very congested, multi family, residential area. There is not a lot for the restaurant, and street parking will be tough. Came here for dinner last night. its a Spanish Tapas-style restaurant so keep that in mind it's a bunch of small plate items. Our waiter recommended ordering 2 Tapas items per person. Tapas ranked from best to worst:: --Mini Crabcakes- my favorite item! The crab cake itself was really good and the sauce they drizzled on top was even better. Good portion size for a small plate item too. --Camarones Al Ajillo- the shrimp was cooked just right and the garlic sauce was bangin'. --Aguacate Relleno- stuffed avocado filled with crabmeat, shrimp, onion. looks like guac in the avocado shell but it was delicious. comes with baguette slices too. again large portion size for a small plate. --Croquetas- your typical ham croquette. cheesy, didnt love the sauce it comes with though. --Patatas Bravas- it is what it is. too crispy potatoes but the spicy aioli was good. --Empanadas De Pollo- chicken empanadas, the filling was whatever and it was crispy. wish it came with a dipping sauce though. --Chorizo Criollo- whatever sausage and potatoes but there was NOT chimichurri sauce...that was straight up balsamic vinaigrette so idk if that was a mistake or what. --Paco Slider- I didn't try this personally, but it is ONE slider not plural just fyi so idk how sharable this item is. My friend go the Paloma which she didnt like and a BlueBerry Mojito she said tasted like juice too. i've never been to a restaurant before where they push you about cocktails as if they get a commission off of it or something. It's always a good time experiencing Casa D'Paco. The staff is lovely and the drinks are so refreshing. I love coming here because it's not too far from where I live so the convenience of getting here is not a problem The tapas are really good, but if you're hungry get a lot! My biggest takeaway here is the plenty of gin cocktails that they have to offer. I'm a gin girl so I love that about this establishment. I don't know why I keep updating my review - I haven't given them anything less than 5 stars since our first visit, and I don't see that changing anytime soon! We went for an early dinner on Friday during the holiday weekend, walked in, and were greeted warmly as always. Enrique always has a smile on his face - but come to think of it, so does everyone else here! We always get sangria - this time a small pitcher of red. Perhaps next time we'll try their white sangria. Thankfully - it never changes - perfect as always. We always look at the specials menu first - we know anything on there may not be there again so we need to try it while we can! We decided to go with the seared scallops on a bed of mash in lemon butter sauce, and grilled lamb chops on a bed of mash topped with mushroom and brandy gravy. We then went to the regular menu for the always-incredible shrimp in garlic sauce. We also decided on the octopus (pulpo). We have had both of these before, and personally - I would never leave here without getting the shrimp in garlic sauce. Ever. Seriously. I don't care how many other things we want to try - we will always get the shrimp in garlic. Of course the shrimp and octopus dishes were both amazing - as they always are, but we were blown away by the scallops! They were cooked perfectly - and I mean 5 star restaurant perfection! The lemon butter sauce and those creamy, dreamy mashed potatoes were to die for! I watched my partner take his first bite, and I swear he was either really, really enjoying his food, or having an orgasm...LOL I concur - it was one of the best things ever! The lamb chops were also amazing - the mushroom brandy gravy was so intensely flavored and so complex and delicious, I wanted to take home a bottle of it and use it on everything! If there is one small critique I have, it was that the lamb chops were actually well-done - a bit over cooked. I don't believe that lamb chops should ever be cooked past medium, and they could have been a bit more tender had they not been overcooked. That being said, they were still amazing and we would still order them again. Next time we would ask for them to be cooked to medium. We ordered espresso, and asked about dessert. I really wanted the tiramisu again, but they didn't have it. Instead, we ordered the cheesecake to share. We had no idea what to expect, since we have never had anything other than NY style cheesecake or Italian cheesecake. We were pleasantly surprised that this cheesecake was light and creamy, and almost a cross between NY style and Italian style. It was delicious and the perfect sweet treat to end another incredible meal. This really is our new favorite restaurant - we'll be back soon!!! read more

AMAZING tapas place! Went here with a group and we sat outside and had a great time. Santiago was an amazing server. He made some food suggestions and everything was great. The potatoes, octopus, shrimp in garlic sauce (YUM), piquillos rellenos, seafood paella were all amazing. I had a cucumber margarita (didn't love this - too sweet) and a regular passion fruit juice (no alcohol) which was GREAT! We also had the bacaloa which was good if you like bacaloa - it's a specific salty taste and this one is served in a thick piece like a cod. Looks like parking may be tough but we took an Uber. I came here without a reservation on a Sunday around lunchtime, and no one was there. However, we were asked if we had a reservation, assuming that their tables were all booked. Regardless, we were seated almost immediately. We had ordered the cheeseboard, paella, steak empanadas, their daily soup special and their ceviche. To start, we were given three rolls of cold bread and some butter while waiting for our meal to arrive. Next came the soup, which was lukewarm and was more on the citrus vinegary side. Then empanadas came out and it was the star of the entire meal. My friend who is Venezuelan said it tasted right and really enjoyed it. My other friend and I, we thought it was just okay, but agreed it was indeed the best thing we ate here. The cheeseboard felt like it's been sitting out for a long time and definitely not worth the price we paid, even though there was one good cheese that we enjoyed. The ceviche..where do I even begin...when you think ceviche, you're thinking diced cubes of tomato, cucumber, onions, shrimp and/or raw fish marinated in a lemon juice mixture. However, what came to the table was pretty much cold tomato soup with a few large shrimp and octopus. Highly disappointing. Last, came the paella, which looked good, until you eat it. The rice literally felt like it came out of a microwaveable packet. The entire dish was really wet, which wasn't a huge problem but it just did not taste good. With the number of positive reviews, this was highly disappointing. We did not want to finish any of the food nor take it away. I'm not sure what went wrong, but never again. read more

So, I haven't been here in over 4 years but my first experiences with this restaurant were amazing and left such an impression on me that I had recommended it to family, friends and coworkers. So I was delighted to come back here after the chaos of the pandemic. However, I had a very, uncomfortable and strange experience this time around. Because of the popularity of the restaurant and my own work schedule, I felt compelled to make a reservation. From what I had seen advertised on their IG they had a heated patio that I was very much interested in being seated at. So, on open table, I requested a reservation for a party of two on their outdoor patio at 5:30 pm. We arrived on time, when there was no crowd or wait times for anyone. I was happy to see the extension of the restaurant because I remembered what it was originally, however, the outdoor patio was not set up at all, which was fine, because it looked like there was a very nice indoor patio set up that I was sure I'd be sat there because of my reservation request. The hostess did not check the reservation, she simply asked me how many people were in my party, which I responded was two, and what name the reservation was under, which I gave. She then ushered us completely pass the indoor patio area to the very back of the restaurant, near the bathroom and bar area. The table she pointed to was extremely tiny and right next to another party who had also been sent to the back of the restaurant. I was, very uncomfortable and found it strange that with only a handful of people in the restaurant, we were made to sit in a dark, tight space and not the extremely spacey and well lit area of the indoor patio. Still, because I enjoy their food, I didn't say anything. Once the waiter began bringing bread and the sangria we ordered, space really became an issue, and we were forced to stack our bags on top of one another just to make room for our orders. At this point, I mentioned to the waiter that we were given very limited space for our food and he completely agreed with me, then stated he would ask if we could be moved to another table if there were no reservations. I thanked him, though again, I didn't understand how reservations were meant to work in the restaurant, especially if a request had already been made to sit in a certain part of it but was completely overlooked. I was also very aware that they needed larger tables for bigger parties but, still couldn't understand why we were sitting near the bar and not where I originally requested. A few minutes went by and we began to notice that the waiter hadn't in fact asked anyone if we could be moved. I had to bring the situation up again due to the tapas being ordered and not having anywhere to put them. He finally did ask someone who agreed we could be moved to a bigger table but we were still in the back and now under a tv that the servers insisted on turning up to watch their game while standing around. Because the experience was still not sitting well, we asked the waiter, who made the decision to sit some people in the indoor patio area and some in the back. His response was RESERVATIONS. I explained to him that I had made a reservation but was never given an option for seating. His response was "Well, we gave you a bigger table right?" Sigh...No, the answer was really not sufficient but because I had just gotten off an 11 hour shift, I decided to take it on the chin and hope that the food was worth it. Everything ordered, including the tapas and entrees was excellent. However, I will say, I'm not planning on returning. If anything, I may order takeout from them because I live locally and love the authenticity of their dishes but the service really turned me off and knocked two stars off a place that I had really loved. read more
