Super huge portions of food. They have a bit of everything, and I would like to say the correct name for what I ordered but it was something long in Spanish which I can't remember and certainly couldn't pronounce if I did, so I won't insult anybody by trying. It was basically a mild Chile Colorado though, with cubes of pork in a nice Chile Sauce served with retried beans, Spanish rice and fresh Tortillas. Overall I really enjoyed it, and the chips and salsa were very good as well. My wife had a chicken breast covered in a queso cheese sauce which she said was very good and which had some fresh looking guacamole on the side. My mother in law had a spinach enchilada which she said was superb. We've been here a few times and always walk away happy. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and the portion sizes. The service was great until the Church crowd showed up, and then it sort of fell off from there but we will still go back in the future so am sure. read more

Two visits in and I'm finding this place kind of charming. It may not be the best Mexican food, but it certainly does the trick. My server both times has been very attentive and nice. The only drawback is that they don't serve alcohol. Casa Cavazos has an extensive menu and daily specials. The chips and salsa come with a bowl of pickled carrots, onions and peppers. On my first visit I ordered the Deluxe Dinner which included a guacamole tostada, a crispy beef taco, beef, chicken and cheese enchiladas and rice and beans...because you know, I figured I needed to try a variety in order to write a well-rounded review. Overall it was satisfying. The guacamole and the beans were a little bland...but otherwise it was good. My next visit was on a Sunday night and I ordered the Burrito Special...three beef burritos with guacamole and sour cream and a cup of queso. Again, the guacamole and the queso were underwhelming, but the burritos were fantastic!!!!!!! I see this special in my future on many Sunday nights to come. I just wish Casa Cavazos would up their game in the guac and queso departments. read more

I am in from out of town for a convention and after getting back to the hotel room, was beat and only wanted to go somewhere close. Casa Cavazos got good reviews on Yelp it was just across the freeway. When I walked in I noticed it was 5 minutes to closing. There was no one in the restaurant except employee's. I offered to go elsewhere but the waitress mopping the floor (and I assume an owner) very cheerfully said please sit down, we're open. Her attitude was very upbeat, she was very attentive, the food came out fast and was fantastic. I had not eaten all day and didn't want to go anywhere else, these folks with their positive attitude, attentiveness and great food just flat made my day. I will most certainly come back again and again. They created a wonderful experience for me. read more

Very slow service for a restaurant that was empty. I had to ask 3 times to get more salsa from two different members of the wait staff. The first person sat at a table after asking laughing with who I assume is the boss or owner. When the second member of the wait staff was asked she told our waitress and she audibly huffed and waited another few minutes before getting any. Food was okay. No bad, but okay. The second waitress was more helpful than our actual waitress. I made sure to tip her, but I'm hard pressed to tip a waitress that huffs when asked for a refill of water or salsa. She got a flat 15%. You were not busy, and I usually tip around 25%. We are very polite... perhaps the fact that I was a man there with my husband??? I don't know. Never going back, and the food was not worth it. I've been going to this place since I was an infant. Literally. This was our "go to" restaurant when I was growing up. 30 years later I decided to FINALLY go back and try my nachos that I always loved so much and they were EXACTLY like I remembered them being. I started going to this place when I was in junior high, so I get a little offended when people refer to it having been around FOREVER. Geeeez, make me feel my age guys! However, it has turned into a neighborhood staple for far East Dallas, bordering Mesquite. When we went it was cheap with the basic menu, some specialty items. It looked like a 1970's El Chico inside. Today it's a little more pricey with a more extensive menu, but still sorta has the El Chico vibe. The food then was solid and it still is, maybe even a little better. I'd always stayed with the safe items, you know, enchiladas, fajitas. Most of my more adventurous tex-mex cravings are taken care of in San Antonio. But on a whim I tried the Guisado de Puerco con Chile Colorado. It was almost as good as Mi Teirra's...ALMOST. Downside, the prices went up also. I know it's a little off the beaten path, unless you live in Mesquite or some other point East of the CBD. But if you end up on that side of town and want some solid tex-mex, give it a try. read more

So sad. I ate here weekly from '06' to 2012 because my weekend job was about a block away. Great food, consistently prepared the same way. Would have given 5 stars back then. Since I quit that dude job, I only came 2-3 a year when in the area. They had a price increase in 2010 but it was okay bc the food was good. Then again in 2014 but I only came here rarely by that point. The last time I came here, early December, and I won't be back, it was not good at all, food and experience. Ordered by phone ahead of time, didn't have anymore Tres Leches cake, and that was okay. When we arrived to pick up order, we decided to order a dessert. We were asked what we wanted, and the cashier was put off because we asked for a menu. With an eye roll, she handed us a menu. Wife and I discussed what we wanted, cashier stated, 'we don't have all the items available'. Logically, we asked what was available, reply was, 'I don't know'. We asked if she would find out to let us know so we could choose. Few minutes later, another staff comes out impatiently flailing her arms around repeating over and over, 'only sopapias' (only 1 dessert available out of the 6 listed in menu). We decline, now just wanting to leave feeling unwelcome - we were the only ones in the restaurant, not a single customer at the table. We pay and getting ready to leave. As we have just ran the Dallas Marathon, my wife asked for a cup of water. Cashier starts to give us one, second staff person physically stopped her and said, 'No, we charge for that'. I replied, 'you charge for water?' , a Yes response. We left, ate the mediocre and over priced food at home. We are no longer customers. Sad. It's a bit far to drive for a lot of people, but worth the drive especially when you are in the mood for huge portions of REAL Mexican food at a great price. I always order the stuffed jalapenos and usually get another order of them to go............yes, I promise, they are delicious, I have never had better anywhere. Service is often just "adequate", but that fits the bill for me, I go there for the food, it is great. The restaurant itself is cozy and plain. My colleagues and I usually end up here when we're on this side of town. The lunch combos range from $6 - $8, which is pretty standard. The service is prompt (even at noon on Friday) and courteous. My drink is always full, and the food is tasty. This restaurant is exactly what I expect from a Mexican restaurant (what a relief), except they serve butter with their tortilla chips. Be aware, they don't handle special requests well, so if you want rice instead of beans, expect them to mess it up the first time. read more

I love independent neighborhood eateries like Casa Cavazos. Such places are an asset to their communities, which they serve in a gracious, understated way. There is much to appreciate about Casa Cavazos; it's old school practice of providing ice water when you're seated, the containers of butter and pickled vegetables that arrive with the chips and salsa, even the quaint, dated interior. The lack of a face lift has helped keep the prices in check because they're very reasonable and the dishes remain very satisfactory. Classic Tex Mex selections like tacos and enchiladas are fine and filling, as is their take on the Chile Relleno. Even better are Guisado de Puerco and the Beef tips con Colorado. The portions are flavorful and generous, both boasting rich, tasty sauces. One of my favorite dishes here is the Seafood Chile Relleno, a plump poblano stuffed with crabmeat, shrimp and cheese. I've seen this better executed elsewhere, but the Cavazos version is good, in terms of both taste and value. I'm glad it remains an option for me here. And I'm glad Casa Cavazos remains an option -- a very good one -- in the East Dallas area it's called home for some three decades. I highly recommend a visit. read more

Have been going here for nearly 30 years and only once had a complaint (greasy tacos), but I don't order them any more. I truly enjoy the appitizer plate and that is my usual. The food has been better. I usually get the quesadilla with beans. Sometimes the beans are not cooked all the way, still kinda hard. The quesadilla is usually always good. I have had other things on the menu but its a hit and miss, so I'd rather stick with the quesadilla. When I first started coming here it was better than what it is now. As for the waitress, would it hurt to smile? The older lady manning the phone and register, I see you doing manual bookkeeping back there, get a computer, it would make me feel better if you did.
