The food was pretty good however it seems like their portions are very inconsistent. One time the shrimp was all on one end of the burrito, the next time there was plenty throughout the whole burrito but now it had peas (no where does it say anything about peas). The waitresses were very friendly. It was a cool spot with cool art on the walls.

We stayed very close to Casa Calaca while on a recent visit to Salida. We didn't try ot until our last night and we are sorry we waited. We probably would have gone again if we tried it earlier. The Margaritas are delicious with fresh squeezed lime juice. Of course chips and salsa are always good, but we loved their spicy salsa. I had the Casa Calaca Especial. It was delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender and the bacon wrapped shrimp were large and tasty. Large portions of food, great staff and comfortable setting. If you're looking for a place to try in Salida I would highly recommend.

Visiting the area and stopped in for dinner last night. It was super busy with the entire entry area full of people waiting. The host told us it would be a 45 minute wait. Obviously it looked popular, so we decided to wait. But within about 10 minutes the entire wait area had been seated, as were we. Great start! The staff was really moving fast - some practically running - to serve food and drinks. The chips were good, homemade salsa was awesome and plentiful - more was offered while we waited for our food to arrive. We had the chicken enchiladas favoritas, and a vegetarian combo. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere is fun and laid back. Staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We'll be returning soon!

Stop here! Great Mexican food. We always make out first assessment with the salsa which did not disappoint. The green salsa was served warm and it was delicious too. We split the bacon wrapped jalapeno pepper appetizer. The bacon was crispy which is always a plus. Next we split a large guacamole salad. Also very tasty with just the right amount of flavor from the lime and cilantro. We ordered ala carte items- Chicken taco, Bean and cheese chalupa, and cheese enchilada. All was just what you expect. The Classic Margarita was also perfect. Good teamwork defined the staff. All hands were on deck to anticipate our every need. Keeping the water glasses and chip baskets full.the decorations were typical southwest colors and items - pottery and baskets. Really a total package and delightful lunch. Definitely will stop here again.

Great place for the street tacos! We got the el pastor and carnitas tacos and they were so good! The el pastor had chucks of pineapple and both were very tender. We also had the patron margaritas with fresh lime just for $14 which I highly recommend! Come here and get the street tacos!

Amazing service and great food! You have to try the queso fundido. It comes with special tortilla "chips" like I have never seen before! Super delicious! I had the chicken Lola crema and it was unique too. My boys had street tacos and loved them. We will be eating here again read more

This is for my money the best Mexican restaurant in Colorado. The food is amazing and simply the best authentic Mexican I have had. So many wonderful dishes with large portions. Great prompt service and a festive happy atmosphere. A pleasant patio out back when the weather is good. I've had a half dozen different entrees and each one has been superlative. The service was great but the drinks were subpar, as was the food. Maybe bec we were there on a Monday? But seriously, my Pollo Loco was missing the mushrooms and tasted more like a mole. My margarita was lacking in all regards. My husband's grilled taco salad was equally disappointing. Not really sure how this place garners its ratings! read more

Visiting Salida for a few days with a friend and had a craving for Mexican. This little spot is easy to find right off of highway 50 and was hopping on this Saturday late afternoon. The decor is as you would expect for the fare and full of vivid colors. Seating was quick and friendly into a comfy well padded booth. As you would expect, there was a quick delivery of warm tortilla chips and delicious salsa and to go with that, we ordered a very tasty and pleasantly spicy jalapeño margarita to share. Opened the menu and was happy to see more than 2 vegetarian options and decided on the spinach and cheese enchiladas. Everything was well prepared and plated so nicely -the enchiladas were nicely balanced with the amount of spinach and cheese, the beans and rice I normally don't eat much of but, these were both done so well, I could not resist eating more than just one bite! On the way out, we took a peek out back on the patio to check out the fun Halloween and Day of the Dead decorations. Really glad I picked this dinner option on this visit - the experience was very pleasant, I could see this is a local favorite and was treated like one of the regulars with friendly conversation with our greeter and server. I will make time to stop in again when I am back for a visit. read more

We were totally ignored. We had to ask the receptionist twice to find our server and have her come by our booth. 30 minutes later our server finally showed up, took our order, and was never seen again at our table, although she did take care of other tables in our section. The food was average and the price point was good, but just a total lack of service. read more

I had high hopes that started fading fast once the chips and salsa arrived (straight out of a bottle, I'm sure). Granted, all I had was the chicken mole lunch special, but holy smokes was this mediocre. The ambience is nice and I tipped the staff well, but I will not be going back. Not sure how it gets 5 stars...Tacos el Tapatio downtown is miles better for slightly less $$. read more

Placed an order for pick up. We ordered the following: carnitas plate, carnitas Calaca and Tacos Al carbon. Everyone loved their food. The portions are 10/10! So much food we had to save it for later! The guacamole was a tiny bit salty but it was edible. We came from LA to visit our loved one and I will say I was very impressed by this location! We had driven up to Leadville and were on our way back and decided to try this place out. When we arrived, it looked like we were in for a long wait. The parking lot was full and there were several people in front of us. But we only waited for about 10 minutes. The service was excellent and the food was even better. The next time I'm in Salida, I will definitely stop in. The fish looked amazing. Try it out! read more

We ate here several times and it never disappoints. We love the queso fundido and big chips it come with. My husband and I split the burrito calica. It come with chicken, beef, chorizo. It was so good. It comes with three sauces. The pineapple was refreshing in it as well. Highly recommend. The service is top notch. Everyone is so nice and always smiling. Just great Mexican restaurant. Nice decorations inside too. Nice bar area as well. read more

Wow, Yelp led us here and we were very pleasantly surprised. Our lunch was excellent and we both ordered off the ala carte menu. Crispy Chili Relleno brought back memories of my childhood. Wish hey used a Pueblo chili instead of Anaheim, but the taste was still amazing. Lettuce and tomatoes added pizazz to the plate. Definitely recommend this restaurant. Yummy! read more

We were driving back to Denver from Pagoda Springs and made a small 10 min side track thru Salida. I read the five star reviews for Casa Calaca and can say, they weren't lyin'!!!! It has the BEST FOOD I've ever had outside of Mexico. It was so delicious and super authentic. The shredded beef enchilada was made from tender brisket, juicy with a fabulous red sauce. The chili relleno was so fantastic and better than any I've ever had. It almost melted in your mouth. We also shared the carnitas which were tender and flavorful. The staff were so wonderful and welcoming. It was a great find. read more

We went here based off of positive reviews and it was terrible. The waitress was rude and gave a dirty look every time she came to the table. The adult beverages were lackluster and not refreshing at all. We had to wait 20 minutes for bbq sauce to go with the kids meal chicken nuggets that were brought out- which was really a frozen chicken patty cut up. Fajitas were extremely tough and lacked any seasoning. At least the salsa was alright. Overall- Def pass on this one. read more

Our home is in Colorado Springs, and we have a cabin in CRESTONE Colorado. So that puts us on Highway 50 going back-and-forth quite often. We discovered this place about a year ago, and we have been going there at least once a month ever since. We have yet to have anything less than a fantastic meal. My daughter enjoys the Carne Asada, which is always extremely tender and perfectly cooked. I get the Carnitas plate, and it is likewise fantastic. My wife and other daughter order a variety of things, and we have yet to have anything less than delicious. The only problem we have is that we can't go there when our cat is in the car! I'm not sure if this place allows cats inside. But we are sure our cat Calypso would also enjoy the food. Highly recommended, possibly the best Mexican restaurant I've ever gone to. read more

After eating here last night I see why there are only five star reviews for this place, We had street tacos and the queso, both were AMAZING! The service is attentive and food came out quickly. The salsa was fest and the chips perfect. The carne asada and shredded beef street tacos were fantastic. The meat was tender, the corn tortillas soft and they were loaded with the perfect amount of cilantro and onions. The queso was made with white cheese and green chilies, something we haven't been able to find since we lived in Missouri, and was served with the most amazing flaky chips unlike any chips we've ever had. read more

Quick and courteous service. We were seated right away and waters, chips, and salsa were refilled regularly. Our food came out quickly and the service staff were friendly and did not appear to be understaffed as is often the case when dining out nowadays. We got the taco special, which was amazing and the enchilada platter with an additional relleno; which was also great. Overall would definitely recommend. read more

Very delicious and authentic food! My husband and I cleaned our plates, everything was really good. We got the churros to go because we were too full by the time we were done, and I sneaked a bite while they were still warm and wow!! Blown away. The service was exceptional! The drinks were very very good, I've never tried a more fresh margarita! The restaurant was very clean and had a fun atmosphere. We would definitely go again and recommend! read more

My group of five ordered carne asada, chorizo, chicken, El Pastor, and chili rellenos. They did not disappoint; each dish was moist and flavorful, wrapped in double corn tortillas that were bursting with juicy goodness with every bite. I was driving around and stumbled upon this Mexican restaurant just off the main road. The menu had so many choices. The chicken enchiladas with tomatillo and avocado were a flavor explosion!
