The guys had the chorizo breakfast burrito, which was tasty, but with a bit too much cheese and a bit too much chorizo for the mix (which may be just my taste). The green chili served over the burrito was quite nice. SERVICE: Tony (I presume) was friendly and helpful. Service was a little slow -- he seemed to be juggling a lot -- but we weren't in a great hurry. AMBIANCE: It's not posh. Based on the sign, it's been there for decades. Terrible Worst experience ever in a restaurant. I ordered the mushroom cheeseburger 9.99, And a glass of ice water. Now I have the runs and was charged over $20 for the meal.. I don't stop as often as I should as this is a real gem hidden next to a gas station in Poncha Springs. Actually, come to think of it most restaurants in Poncha Springs are next to gas stations. Regardless, ever time I have been in Tony has been my server. He has a loyal local clientele and the food is tasty and reasonably priced. I'm a gringo originally from upstate New York so I don't feel qualified to judge mexican food, but I have never been disappointed with anything I've ordered. Tony's is a somewhat lonesome roadhouse style restaurant on the "outskirts" of tiny Poncha Springs. It's a good stop if you're headed west toward Monarch Pass on U.S. 50 or south on U.S. 285, because it's just about the last restaurant for dozens of miles going in those directions. Tony's menu is mostly Mexican, with some American stuff thrown onto the menu for good measure. On the day we were there, Tony himself was the only guy on the floor--his wife was apparently cooking in the back--and he had his hands full with all of the ten or eleven tables in the restaurant. He forgot our drink orders for quite awhile, but when he arrived with them he more than made up for it with his unnecessarily profuse apologies, as well as with his genuine friendliness during the rest of our visit. The al pastor in my quesadillas was succulent and spicy, just the way you want it to be. It was also plentiful. This was very simple Mexican food--no bells and whistles at Tony's--but very satisfying just the same. 3.5 stars, rounded up. N.B. For what it's worth, the wife would disagree with my rating. She thought her plate of vegetarian Mexian food was very mediocre. But she's not writing this review! read more

When traveling we like to eat local. It's usually a unique experience and excellent food. That's exactly what Tony's is. With about 30 seats to the entire restaurant it's very intimate. We were immediately sat and from the outset the service was phenomenal. I have a family of six and they were accommodating of my children. No issues with special orders and the food came out quickly. I had dinner of carne asada with beans, avocados, tomatoes, and rice; which was the best and most tender flank steak dinner , that I had ever eaten. My family ate everything from burritos, tacos, Mexican combos, all with beans, avocados, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes, real shredded cheese, and fried Spanish rice. My husband and I are celebrating our 25 year wedding Anniversary and we are on our way to Crested Butte, CO from Austin, TX. We stopped by Tony's Restaurant on the way for lunch and it was surprisingly delicious. The owner greeted us, welcomed us and recommended the daily special, Chile relleno plate and my husband had 4 tacos de Carne Asada and WOW! I told the owner that you can tell the food was made with lots of love, found out his wife is the cook and she is an Excellent cook! So glad we supported his business all the way from Austin, Tx. Nice touch with the books on each table to read, enjoyed having my husband read the funny stories and laughing together while we waited for our food to come out. We needed a place to eat between long stretches of open road on our way from Leadville to Pagosa Springs in July last year so we stopped at the junction of roads which is Poncha Springs (near Salida). It seemed like the few restaurants in town were all closed but Tony's was open. Good thing for us since it really hit the spot. The place was too busy for our group of 6 to eat inside so we ate on a picnic table outside. Fine with us since it was a great day and a nice breeze and some mountains in the distance that looked like they were getting rained on. Tacos al Pastor were fantastic as well as enchiladas supremas, burritos and everyone loved their food. Service was very good. Fun time. Tony's is a great Mexican food oasis for road travelers, definitely need them on the Yelp map. read more

My girlfriend and I were on our way to an awesome weekend in the Black Canyon when we stopped for gas in Pancho Springs at the station next door to Tony's Restaurant. We were starting to get a hungry but traveling with dogs and wanting to make miles made it near impossible to sit down and have a meal somewhere, so we were about to open some peanuts when we noticed Tony's. The sign said Mexican and American food so I took a shot and went in to check it out. Wise decision! We were going to be eating in the car so I was looking for something easy and not too messy. The menu is mostly Mexican but they also have lots of diner type items. I settled on a couple of cheeseburgers with fries. A very nice young man took my order and then went to the kitchen and hollered "Mom, two cheeseburgers with fries!". I knew right then the odds were good that we were in for a decent meal. Toasted buttery bun, nicely cooked patty, American cheese melted just right, and all the fresh veggies you could ask for. The fries were hot and crispy, just the way we all like them. They were out of packets of ketchup and mustard so they hooked us up with some small containers of each. A cool move that worked out great because we used the ketchup for a couple of other meals while we were camping. The place was well kept and had a good overall vibe. It seemed like most of the tables in there were eating Mexican food, so I'm guessing it's pretty good. Maybe the next time I pass through town I'll stop and give it a try! read more
