Finally had Carytown sushi for the first time after living here for 6+ years! I didn't realize how small the inside was. The whole place has about 6 tables and a tiny bar but you couldn't sit there, they had a sign that said "carry out only" which kinda stinks because I love sitting at a sushi bar and watching them make it. I ordered the spicy salmon, spicy scallop and miso soup. The sushi was average and the sauce on top was a little sweet for my taste. My friend ordered the dragon roll, something with eel in it and that was pretty good. He also ordered a Sopporo beer and the server forgot to bring it until we said something. We've been ordering the same fish tempura appetizer for literally years, and she said they didn't have any. After an agonizing discussion, we finally chose the seafood tempura that came with... you guessed it... fish tempura!! Wasa-up bae??? They don't do curbside, you have to go in to get your order. So when it came to paying, I said I'd just give her my info when I got the the restaurant. She said I had to give it over the phone (which I'm not fond of due to concerns about identity compromise... been there done that) and she rudely remarked that we can forget the order then! Uhhhhh.... did you guys want to stay in business??? Treating your customers harshly on the phone or in person is surely business suicide. Controlling my tempura, I moved on and reluctantly acquiesced. Nevertheless, we picked up the order, (Carytown was a ghost town so easy parking!) walked in with our appropriate PPE, got our food, no word from the sushi gallery... not even a raw peep! No hello, no thank you... miso not happy! Then, we settled in for our meal... it was underwhelming. My chicken hibachi with fried rice had eggshells in it, and my daughter's tempura was missing the sauce (we made our own mayo/sriracha blend) and was below par. The food was so good! It isn't as cheap as other yelp reviewers have previously stated, so definitely a rise in the price- but for this quality I'd say its worth it! I got ginger salad and miso soup not pictured and the ginger salad was my favorite I've ever had honestly! And if something is on the roll that you don't want (such as cream cheese), they'll not add it. Sushi is good, I wish the pieces were bigger though. Gosh...I should've ordered two rolls. The beef ramen bowl was filling and I really liked it. My friend had shrimp fried rice but said the shrimp was overcooked. Our waitress was friendly and checked on us just enough. This place is disgusting. Ate here yesterday and it was quite literally the worst sushi I've ever had. Grocery store sushi is better than this travesty of a restaurant. The rice was somehow both soggy and gloopy but slightly undercooked in the middle making it slightly crunchy. How you simultaneously over cook and undercook rice is beyond me, amazing. Sushi rice is supposed to be seasoned with vinegar and sugar, this rice was a completely unseasoned and tasteless mess. I ordered an assortment of nigiri, a 5 piece nigiri plate of "chef's" choice and two rolls. The 5 piece came out first and I immediately knew it was going to be bad from the color of both the salmon and the tuna. If your tuna is Barbie pink, don't put it into your mouth. They included a piece of tilapia nigiri which was so horrible I had to spit it out into my napkin, it was like chewing canned tuna flavored rubber bands and sinew. The salmon was a drab grayish orange color with very little fat marbling and also tasted closer to canned tuna than any fresh salmon I've ever eaten. The piece of Ebi (shrimp) nigiri was so dry, tasteless and obviously previously frozen that I spat that out as well. By that point I went to ask the waitress if I could cancel the other nigiri I ordered but she said it was too late as he was plating it up. Yum. The tiny little rolls came out and again, basically tasted like canned tuna with gloopy/crunchy unseasoned rice and soggy nori. I prefer rolls without tons of sauce to mask the flavor and I ordered two with only three ingredients in each, but god damn they were just terrible. Some sauce would have actually really helped to mask the old fish flavor. Delicious. Tried a piece of the "yellowtail" nigiri and one piece of the Mackerel and ended up just leaving all other 8 pieces and the remaining rolls on the table. I honestly don't know how restaurants like this stay in business, I guess their location in Carytown saves them from their terrible quality food. Please, save yourself the trouble and go to 7-11 up the street, their sushi is probably fresher and prepared with more skill. (I don't think 7-11 actually sells sushi but if they did...you get the idea.) 1 star is generous. read more

You had me at sushi happy hour. This is a very intimate, trendy sushi restaurant that gives you a quality meal at an amazing value. There is very limited seating, so get there as early as you can before the dinner rush. I sat with my friends at the bar around 5:30 on a week night, getting the last seats in the restaurant. Certain classic rolls were half price for happy hour, and I foolishly ordered four thinking they'd be tiny. I got a California roll, spicy tuna, salmon and avocado, and shrimp tempura. There were well constructed, were proportioned well as far as the rice to fish ratio, and held together perfectly. We were all unanimous that everything was fresh and delicious, not one disappointing bite between us. Each roll was six large pieces, and my eyes were certainly bigger than my stomach. This speaks volumes for the gentleman making all the food. The server is a professional... excellent at her job. Ordered the two rolls option, California roll and eel avocado roll, they came in each order in tiny 6 pierces, a small bowl of salad and miso soup: very small portion for the sushi. So had to order extra a la cart sushi, add on sushi are yellow tail, white tuna and salmon roe, each order comes in two pieces. Decent portion for a la cart orders but not sure if the fish are fresh. I asked for a "spicy girl crab." It came with literally pickled jalapeños. Have you tasted it? A child wouldn't even think it's close to spicy. After not having been here for a while, I went back when my standard, favorite Carytown Sushi joint, Sushi Momotaro, ran out of rice (random). The quality had noticeably improved since my last visit. We started with some bottles of sparkling sake. This stuff is fizzy, sweet and very easy to drink. Probably not for fine sake fans, but it goes down easy. I started my meal with the kani salad. The version at Carytown Sushi has lots of tempura crunch added and it's light on the spicy mayo dressing, but that's ok. I can at least pretend it's lower in calories. I ordered one roll with shrimp tempura topped with spicy salmon and one with pepper tuna. The fish tasted fresh, the flavors were well combined. People at the rest of my table ordered a variety of rolls ranging from a simple California Roll to some of the specials like Dragon Phoenix and everyone was happy. The only complaint: service was extremely slow. It took forever for our waitress to arrive at our table. Then, when we tried to order drink refills halfway through the meal, she informed us it was "last call" so we'd better order anything we wanted then. That was no big deal, since we weren't exactly planning on hanging out in a sushi joint. Then she disappeared until we had finished all our food and waited for the check so long that we were about to walk into the kitchen to find her. The first time I went here, I ordered a sushi roll that had no rice in it. It was over $10, and was literally 5 pieces of rolled fish and avocado, with some spicy mayonnaise liberally splattered all over my plate. I went back and checked the menu after it arrived, convinced that I must have missed the place where it said THIS IS SUSHI WITH NO RICE IN IT but alas, there was nothing noted on the menu. My husband got sushi rolls from the same page on the menu, and his all had rice in them... So I left hungry, because really 5 little pieces of sushi aren't enough to fill me up. And there was no way I was paying to order another roll, when the first one was so puny and so expensive. On subsequent visits I ordered sashimi, and was appalled to find the mackeral so dry that I could have bought it at the grocery store and had it be fresher... Even though the restaurant was fairly empty, the service still seemed slow. Definitely not the place to go on an hour lunch break. Went here for lunch after an exam. The restaurant is compact and there was only one waitress serving the entire restaurant, so service was painfully slow. However, the menu was quite extensive! The food was reasonably priced; not inexpensive, but it's Japanese food after all. I ordered a lunch special bento box with shumai, soup, salad, three pieces of California Roll, and shrimp tempura. I also ordered a spider roll on the side, which was served on a kid-friendly spider-web + spiders-decorated dish. All of the food tasted fine and my dining companions were happy with their specialty sushi rolls. We had a party of seven though, and since almost all of the restaurant's seating is four-person booths, this place might not be the best for accommodating large groups. We ended up sitting in the window booth with an extra, small round table pulled over and adjoined on the side, which was quite unique.
