Simple place with limited seating and a good supply of frozen prepackaged ice cream and ice cream cakes as well. They also have frozen yogurt and solid ice cream in a variety of flavors and toppings but for me personally, it's soft ice cream that gives Carvel its popularity..4.5 stars on my yelp meter and fudgie the whale would approve. read more

This place is bare bones. No decorations and no eating inside the establishment. The service wasn't that great. Haven't been to a Carvel in a decade. I'm not sure, I'll be going back or just not to this location. At least greet the customers. I went for the bogo deal for nation ice cream day. It was only for the soft serve ice cream and nothing else. Only had 4 flavors, so I stuck with vanilla. Can't go wrong with that. I guess the official start to the ice cream season is this weekend, yet last week's temperatures had to have you all thinking and eating your tasty treats. For me, it's not so - for you see - I hate ice cream. It annoys me - it's cold and I typically don't like cold things in my mouth. And I've never really had a flavor to call my own, the pop up bars from the Good Humor truck were fun but I enjoyed the piston pushing up each lick moreso than the sweetness upon my toungue. So she said "I could go for some ice cream" and "go for" were the troubling words - we just enjoyed a cocktail so driving to get this weird cold pleasure made absolutely no sense to me. So I told her to settle in with a fist full of Christmas Chocolates and a glass of milk and chill out a bit and see where it goes. Well, it didn't go my way but hers, so we "went for" ( go for - went for -- those same words are ringing in my head right now) So we walked and her concoction cane out of a high metal vassel with a curly q design and then it got rolled in sprinkles of every color. I went to Carvel today to pick up a cone of soft serve. out of the six machines that serve soft serve ice cream only chocolate and vanilla were available. That's fine so then I said to myself let me get another flavor and so I asked to try the mint chocolate chip. I asked for a sample taste which I've done many times in the past at this very location. Do not order an ice cream cake from this location. My husband loves Carvel ice cream cakes so I get one every year for his birthday. This year was his 40th and we were celebrating with his family so I called weeks in advance to place the order. I spoke to a very nice young man who assured me they would decorate it nicely. When I arrived to pick it up the woman at the counter presented me with a plain white cake with the birthday message written sloppily. I tried to remain calm and asked if she could please add some kind of decoration. She argued with me for at least 5 minutes, demanding that I needed to tell her how to decorate it. She finally agreed to add sprinkles after I walked over to the display case to see how the existing cakes were decorated. She told me next time I need to come to the store to place the order in person since I'm so particular about the decoration. Ridiculous for a basic birthday cake. They hired some college or high school student who was helping us. The older man training her, was speaking to her in their native language. Having worked in Asia, with conversational skill in Korean and Japanese, I thought the cadence of their speech sounded very Korean, definitely not Japanese, Tagalog, or Thai, but could be a dialect of Chinese that I hadn't heard. In any case, I could only hear their mumbling. When I asked the older man if he was speaking Korean, the student-aged worker told me loudly and two times that I was "More than slightly offensive." The worst part is that she told me this in front of my nine-year-old, who is of mixed race. Not the worst part, but still extraordinary, is that when the student-worker took my money, she hesitated in giving me my change to indicate that the change would serve as her tip. The entitlement to insult someone, do so in front of his child, and then presume to deserve a tip is unbelievable. I've been going there for ten years, through two owners, with brief respites when they received a "B" grade from the Department of Health, which has happened at least twice. But enough is enough. I went there one evening to place a custom order. One guy was wiping the window and I smelled a strong mildew odor. Ok maybe it was a dirty rag so I ignored it. I went back a few days later to pick up the cake and the store still smelled like mildew so I thought maybe they "cleaned" again. When I got home I picked up that smell when I opened the bag. The mildew smell is all over the box. That means mildew is all over their hands!! If you don't know what mildew is. Take a wet rag and wipe your armpits and leave the rag in a plastic bag for 24 hrs. I called ahead to make sure they had Fudgey the Whale cakes available. The manager said they had two and he would hold one to the side for me. I always get a bit nauseated every time I come here. I'm usually on a mission to get a large vanilla shake with rainbow sprinkles for my boyfriend - it is one of his favorite treats. However, when I saw the calorie counts for the shakes, I almost got sick. A medium shake has more calories than one should consume in an entire day. Watching them prepare a large shake for someone, I watched them pour in over half a gallon of full-fat milk, add about a quarter cup of sugary syrup, and then at least an entire movie-sized bag of candy. Plus the ice cream and the sprinkles. Everyone waiting on line usually have bulging stomachs, and most of them will be smoking a Newport with one hand and drinking a full fat shake with the other. UGH. I do have to say, however, that no one does a birthday cake like Carvel. Carvel ice cream cakes were a part of my childhood, and I would still rather have one than the birthday cupcakes made by the bakery that I work for (which will also set you back about $50). I just wish that they would streamline their menu to make it a bit healthier, and maybe just encourage options like skim milk, less candy and smaller portion sizes. Obesity is a huge issue in America, and this Carvel reminds me of a midwestern stalwart, or a place where Honey Boo Boo Child's mother would go to.
