As a first time customer, I walked into Carvel to ask if they carried frozen yogurt because that tends to be my preference in the world of frozen dairy. I was met with an openly hostile, condescending diatribe from the fellow behind the counter about the failings & inferiority of frozen yogurt in the tiny hole in the universe that is Canton. The situation was absurd: his vehement hatred for frozen yogurt, and the rant my innocent question induced. To say that I will never visit a Carvel in the future is the smaller consequence. I will now never eat custard again, of any brand, from any store, anywhere in the world. Instead, I will herald the virtues of frozen yogurt for the rest of my days. My fella Jeremy lived the first few years of his life out east. So there are certain East Coast things that bring back warm and fuzzy memories from his little kid days. Carvel ice cream cakes are one of these special things. Just talking about Carvel would make him smile. At first, I didn't really understand how these ice cream cakes could be that different than something that you might pick up at Baskin Robbins. Then, I tasted a Carvel cake. Sweet Carvel, I am SO sorry for lumping you in with cakes form the land of 31 flavors! I noticed that the local Kroger started carrying Carvel in their freezer section. I bought one, but was somewhat disappointed. They just couldn't quite compete with the ones sold at this actual Carvel store. Maybe it's something about the freezing/shipping process? The texture of the cakes purchased from this store seems way better. Something about the smoothness of the ice cream + little "chocolate crunchies" = dreamy combo. This particular Carvel store gets my special love because it's the first one I discovered in Michigan. Also, the staff here is quick and helpful, even in the summer, when things are a little busy. Recently I've discovered a few other locations - in West Bloomfield and Commerce Township. I'm glad that Fudgie the Whale is spreading the Carvel love around Metro Detroit. I'm a little more freaked out by Cookie Puss, but you'll have to judge that cake for yourself! read more

Ice cream here is so/so . The owner was rude the first time we went in there . I was looking around and he kept asking if we were ready to order . Explained I had never been before - his reply was "you must not be from around here then " said I've lived here forever - he then replied something along the lines of I don't know good ice cream then or something like that.....ok. DEE-licious! I'm a huge supporter of ice cream so my friend Beth took me to this place called Carvel which had just opened near her parent's home. She told me I must try "Birthday Cake" ice cream and so I did and it was GOOD! I am not a fan of cake but it tasted just like the batter does. The place is decorated with bright colors on the inside and the ice cream is fairly priced. I have been back to Carvel's in this location and the one out here in California. I'm so glad they are out here! It's located in the parking lot of a couple big stores so there is no problem with parking and is near a lot of resteraunts. You gotta try Carvel's ice cream sometime! read more

I can't even review the ice cream because the owner was so rude, I walked out. I asked him what he recommended since I didn't want something super sweet. He responded with "Well you shouldn't have come to an ice cream shop". I then said "I just had my mind set on pistachio today. You know, how it isn't a too sweet flavor". He proceeded to tell me to go to Dearborn and he makes over 100 flavors, that he has worked in Canton for 13 years and no one buys pistachio. But his flavors were all generic (mint chip, choco, strawberry, b-day cake, dulce leche, etc.) I played it off being polite and mentioned in California (where I am from) their crazy hard to find flavor was Green Tea....and surprise surprise another rude comment "California probably only had it for a time, and they like frozen yogurt". Thanks guy. I'm not spouting about a vacation I was on....I know what the trends were and are. So, don't bother. You'll want to leave the second you walk in. read more

Owner Gary was unfriendly and not helpful to customers in any way. He rushed us, did not work to accommodate us in any way. When picking up my custom cake he refused to give me a copy of the order form and receipt. Would never go back and plan on tellingn friends and family about the horrible lack of customer service. Disappointed and dissatisfied. The ice cream cake I ordered did not look as it did in their book. The border piping was awful and I could see cake through the icing. Clearly they are cheap and trying to cut corners. If I were the owner I would have been embarrassed to let something like that leave my shop. So about a day after that happened, the person that had the weird phone call with Gary the owner, sent a short email explaining the situation with someone higher up at Carvel. This guy was super nice and explained that he also talked to Gary and that his rudeness was inappropriate. He gave us his number invase there were any further issues. He also sent us some coupons which was nice. Tonight 3 of us went in to get ice cream. It was the most inappropriate, uncomfortable experience I've ever had lol. We order our food with the two sweet girls waiting on us, then when we hand her one of the coupons, she shows it to Gary (which makes sense, I'm sure she needed to show that to her boss). His response was to say "Oh huh. Which one of you called the company on me?" Very confrontationally. When the person in our group said it was them he said "Oh well. You should have dealt with me personally. I could be gotten you a lot more coupons.". She replied with "Well I did talk to you though...". He said "Oh right... Well I offered you stuff and you refused it sooo....". And she said "Well you were rude to me.". And he basically ended the conversation with "Well I'm sorry if thats how you took it.". It was so extremely uncomfortable. I felt awful for the girl that was trying to work the cash register because she was just kinda watching this awkward conversation. The only good thing that came out of it was that our ice cream was free with ths coupons. We will never be going back there after that and will be calling the guy from Carvel back tomorrow. I like to bring my girls here after we grab dinner and I'll tell ya they love that Fudge mascot. The selection of Ice cream Is great and all delicious. The girls behind the counter are so happy all the time so that makes for a great environment and experience. On Wednesdays its buy one get one Sundae day so very affordable for big families. The girls are convinced there is a ghost though because the door will randomly open and close. wonder if there is any truth to this.... read more

Had an awful experience with an employee here, he said his name was NOLAN SAVAGE. Walked in and immediately I was told to put on a mask or leave. I asked if they had some disposable ones so I could quickly order and get out of there. Employee said "no we ran out of masks. But you still have to have one" my mom ran out to the car to grab us masks. My mom gets inside and hands me the one mask she had and goes to leave because she didn't have one for herself. She had barely turned when the employee goes "ahem, everybody needs masks" and looks at my two year old and my mother who is trying to leave. Finally I had had it with his attitude and asked if there was a manager around or someone else to help us. He informed us the he was the manager. When I questioned him he double backed and said "oh I'm the acting manager, my manager is gone today" yeah ok. We left without ordering because this kid was on a whole power trip. read more

I normally go there with my son for ice cream. I was juggling 2 containers of ice cream when I handed the cashier a $20 for a roughly $4 sale. She handed me back change, folded, and I stuffed the bills in my pocket. As I was sitting on the bench outside eating the ice cream, I decided to reach into my pocket to sort out the change. To my dismay, I got back $6 change, instead of $16 for my $20. I went back in the store right away to speak with the owner. Says he can't do anything until the end of the night when he counts the drawer. Say's he'll call me back, which he never bothered. I called him the next day. Why does it not surprise me to hear him say his drawer was not over and there'll be no refund of my $10. Did you even bother to check your security cameras? Probably not. Treat your customers like they are the criminals. Interesting business philosophy. Well, apparently your desperate cashier needed the $10 more than I did. ICE CREAM - The same delicious Carvel soft serve I fell in love with almost 30 years ago when my Long Island born wife took me to a Carvel's in New York for the first time. SERVICE - The Canton franchise is exceptional! I ordered a gluten-free Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake that I was to pick up on my way home to Lake Orion from a business trip in Chicago. When I arrived, I found out that they had accidentally assembled the cake with the "crunchies" inside, which meant it was not gluten-free. They felt horrible about the error, especially when I told them that the cake was specifically requested by my daughters for their 18th birthday (twins). After learning that I didn't need the cake until three days later, they offered to make me a new cake, this time being certain it was gluten-free, and deliver it to my house 47 miles away in Lake Orion with no delivery charge! I took them up on their generous offer, and sure enough, the correct cake was delivered to us right when they said it would. Now THAT is service! read more

Expatriate New Yorkers Rejoice! There's a Carvel in Michigan that's superb! My husband is a native New Yorker and loves Carvel. Throughout the years we've been together, returning to New York for a family occasion often includes a Carvel ice cream cake. Carvel is part of the fabric of their family's history. Every birthday, my in-laws got Carvel cakes for the children, and a treat meant a visit for Carvel soft-serve. A couple of years ago, my husband stumbled upon the Carvel shop in Canton. He has since become a raving fan of this Carvel shop - and, I agree. It's wonderful. The soft-serve and the hard-pack ice cream are delicious. Creamy, perfectly flavored, soft texture - this franchise has got it right. As other Yelp reviews mention, the owner - Gary - is on-site. We've spoken with Gary many times; he's very friendly and wildly enthusiastic about his business. He takes tremendous pride in his shop and it shows. The place is spotless, the counter staff friendly and knowledgeable, and the seating areas abundent. Gary landscaped the space around his shop and there are several benches and an umbrella-covered table available outside. So, you can comfortably sit and enjoy your Carvel either indoors with the air-conditioning or outside.. When Gary opened the shop six years ago, he went to the corporate headquarters for training and learned that Carvel had just introduced - for the first time in its decades-long history - a new model for their ice-cream machine. Gary thought about that for a minute and decided to go with the original machine. From his perspective, a machine that had been in successful use for decades meant the true "Carvel experience". Turns out to be a good decision on his part. His ice cream is divine. You can also order all kinds of ice cream cakes from Gary. He's very supportive of local businesses, schools, sports teams, etc. Go on in and enjoy the ice cream - who knows? I just got off the phone with Gary, owner of Carvel in Canton, and was so blown away by his generosity, thoughtfulness and service that I felt compelled to tell the world. It's not often you come across people like Gary. I called with a last minute and quite inconvenient request, expecting to hear a no, but Gary listened to my situation and went out of his way to accommodate me. He not only made my day, he made the day of the gentleman receiving a famous Fudgy the Whale Ice Cream Cake. Customer Service is a lost art. So when you come across someone, someplace, with so much heart, who truly cares about what he does and the people he does it for, you got to shout it from the internet rooftops. Out shopping Sunday afternoon when it hits us "we want ice cream" because to be fair when isn't a good time for ice cream. I haven't been to this location since they opened forever and a day ago and coming back in brought back some memories. I got a soft serve in a cone with sprinkles and I was back to my 10 year old self when that's all I would get whenever we went out for ice cream. Delicious. My husband and I enjoy going to Carvel Ice cream, as native 'New Yorkers' Carvel reminds of us home and our childhood. When we moved to the Detroit area, we were very excited to see that a Carvel Ice Cream was so close. The people at Carvel have been very kind to us and as regular customers we enjoy going there and talking to the owners. Every time we go, we get the same quality service. The people that work there are very friendly and treat us like family members. We recently had our daughters birthday party there, and the owner was very accommodating. He helped us make it as easy as possible, and it was very affordable! He gave the girls a tour of the store, and they were even able to make their own ice cream! The girls loved every minute of it, not to mention they made us an adorable cake that my daughter loved! To Laura (below), the one who's experience was not as good as mine. I hope that you give Canton Carvel another chance, because they have been the so kind to my family and I. A little tip, if you call ahead they can personalize the cake for you and take it out of the freezer. Their cakes have to be set out for a half an hour before eating. Best ice cream in Michigan. I love everything about this store. Staff is extremely friendly. The ice cream is phenomenal. I usually get the mint chocolate chip and it's to die for! They have some great toppings too. Also good shakes and soft serves. I haven't gotten a cake but I'm super tempted to. There's a cake shaped like a reeses peanut butter cup that I've been wanting to try. They also have a punch card so if you get 10 purchases, you get a free one! I would like to commend this business for making an extra effort for one customer. My boyfriend wanted to get me Fudgie the Whale for my birthday, but we live in the Chicago area, which (sadly) lacks Carvel stores. He called many Carvel locations in the Midwest to see if any of them would be able to ship Fudgie, and no one was willing to do it--until he reached Gary at this store. Gary was happy to help, and thanks to his excellent packing and shipping job, Fudgie arrived safely and perfectly frozen! Canton is lucky to have Gary and this Carvel store. read more

While the ice cream is ok, under staffed. There was an older lady working in the back. When we first got there I watched her walk outside for a smoke break. She came back in, did not wash her hands. She then started filled up the chocolate syrup container... licked her finger then place it on the spout of the chocolate syrup container and licked off the extra syrup. She then proceeded to fill the topping containers with her hands and spoon... thankfully we were only getting soft served ice cream in cones otherwise we would have left. Will not be going back.
