I brought Garrett a picture of a $2000 leather blanket and 2 months later I had an even better, bespoke version for myself. Just yesterday I popped into say "hello" and Garrett was able to remove a set in stain on my Valentino Rockstud booties, (in less than 7 minutes mind you) and I could not have been happier. I bought a belt about two blocks down from a store on Main Street. I needed another hole punched in the leather. They recommended I walk down to Carter's. So I stopped in unannounced! The staff was so kind, They said no problem and punched a hole for me right there NO CHARGE!! Wow what a treat! When do you ever get that lucky with customer service!? I brought an old worn out pair of mountaineering boots to get resoled. I've been to many shoemakers in my day, but the job Carters did to resole my boots was nothing short of brilliant. Like new. Clean. And without defect, which was impressive given the state of my boots. They rock. read more

I have a pair of Asolo brand hiking boots and they have "Vibram" soles with lugs specifically for hiking on rough terrain. I first communicated with Jeff Carter in an email in early August. He confirmed he could replace the entire sole, not a half-sole, and that the turn-around time was about two weeks from when they received the boots. I packaged and sent the boots a couple days later and according to Carter's, they were received August 25th. Three weeks went by and I contacted them to check on the status. The employee said he would check on the status and call me back. He never did. A few weeks passed and I called them again. They had a hard time finding my boots but were able to tell me the boots were sent to their "boot repair shop". Again, I was told they would call me back with an estimated time of repair. At the same time, I was told it was not uncommon for repairs to take two months!!! TWO MONTHS to replace the sole on a pair of boots. At the beginning of December (three months after sending the boots), I called and spoke to yet another person at Carter's. He located my boots and told me they were having difficulty finding the exact sole. He asked if they had to be "exactly the same" and I told him I only wanted something similar. A week later they contacted me and asked for payment and a shipping fee of twenty dollars. The boots arrived a few days later. Unfortunately, the soles they put on are similar to the original in name only. They are Vibram soles that look more like deck shoe soles than hiking soles. I have so many negative feelings about shipping shoes to Bozeman, Montana to a place that literally does not care if, or when, your boots are ever completed that I can't mention them all. They don't keep you informed without you calling and the odds are they won't call you back with an update. Finally, when the repair is completed, it is not even close to being the same boot. If this negative review saves anyone from going through the same grief that I went through then it has served it's purpose. Simply, not good enough! I always give places a second chance. First experience here was a couple years ago. I stopped in looking for a pair of nice cowboy boots. I got judgy eyes because I didn't fit the bill. At least that's what it felt like. That's ok, whatever, brush it off and take my business elsewhere. Fast forward to today, a couple years later, there are now 4 reasons I decided to leave this review. Leaving 1-star reviews leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially when it's pertaining to a local business, but let's be honest, this review isn't really going to affect them. It's only going to bring my experience to light. If anything, they may lose one or two customers over the next decade. The idea behind this review is to possibly help a local business improve. With that, at first everything seemed just fine and dandy, until I took a minute to think about it afterwards. I dropped off 2 pairs of boots to get the soles repaired/replaced. They were very good boots, I've had them both for at least a dozen years, but one of them probably only cost up to $150 and the other up to $200. reason 1 (for the review): I felt like I was price-gouged. They quoted me $90 ea. I hesitated at first, but then said ok (because they are the only cobblers around, that I know of). If they would have given me a little more clarity, I would have been more comfortable with the quote, but it was literally, as the early 20-some-year-old helping me turned to an older gentlemen, "Dad, how much..." Hmmmmmm, he responds, "how about $90?!" I said for both or each and he said each. Now, $90 for both felt low, but then when he said each I held my breath ever so slightly. If he would have said over $100, I think that I may have ended up laughing a little. They could have remedied this by giving me a little context, and possibly kept my business. But, then again, you probably don't need my business because you're busy enough, which leads me to reason 3. Wait, we're only at reason 2: Humility. Not sure if this is the best word for it, but sounds pretty good. Maybe it is though, let me explain... I was welcomed as I entered, and immediately helped. Great! The son (we'll call him) had a nice smile and was approachable. But as I made small talk with him, he just didn't seem to care. Even if you don't care, at least give someone the respect of pretending to listen. Conversation was pointless. You know when you look at someone and you just swear they're telling you to shut up in their head? Yup, that's what it was like. Ok, now for reason 3: Timeframe. Hey, I get it... oh my my, everyone is so busy here, how can we ever make it through the day. Count your blessings Bozemanites! No I'm not a transplant, born and raised in Helena. Three weeks they said. I did laugh a little this time. Two weeks seemed a little more reasonable, and you know what, if he would have simply said, "hey, we've been very fortunate during the pandemic, we're staying pretty busy, are you ok with 3 weeks?" Or even, "3 weeks ok with you," I would have smiled and said absolutely. But, I was told, not asked. In the world of customer service, the best businesses ask people, not tell them. Which leads me to reason 4: The Pandemic. Dare I bring that up?! For someone that has been quite effected by Covid, I wear a mask and use hand sanitizer pretty religiously. That's my choice and I don't judge others for their choices. I just keep my distance from people that don't wear masks, and wash my hands after touching anything someone else may have touched. And the sign on their front door, though slightly condescending, I actually agree with it. Simply, they are saying according to the 4th amendment, they cannot legally ask you about your medical condition, so if you're not wearing a mask, they'll assume you you have a condition and will still welcome you in. Then in small print they say for a variety of reasons their staff does not normally wear masks, but they will if you request. Sorry to hear everyone there has a medical condition. Really though, who's going to request that you put on a mask. It wouldn't have bothered me if I would seen at least 1 individual wearing a mask, or if they would have had some to borrow at the front, or at least hand sanitizer on the counter. Unless I overlooked something, there was nothing in sight. I am a guy, therefore I am kind of blind sometimes though. I did notice the pistol on the dads hip though, ha! I think I'll take my $180 and head on over the RedWing, they look pretty legit. Unless I get a request to make things better from Carter's here, but you know what, I bet they don't even know they have a Yelp page, lol. They are an unclaimed business on Yelp and there are no responses to any reviews. read more

I give most places a second chance before drafting a negative comment. Carter's just failed theirs. 1) Lost my order. All I needed was a pair of heals on some boots. Five weeks later, I finally got them back. On top of the five weeks. They charged me twice what I have paid at other shops. 2) Not following directions is one thing. Its not a big deal. Just say sorry and make it right. However, that is not the practice at Carter's. Blaming the customer for your employees incompetence is how they do it. Unless you enjoy being called a liar to your face I would find another cobbler/leather shop. Rampant unprofessionalism in this place. read more

I came in on September to but myself a pair of cowboy boots. Jeff was kind enough to help me figure out a custom fit for the boot that I chose. I ordered a semi customization to the boot and although it took nearly 3 months, the boot that I received was beyond perfect! Beautiful and the perfect fit! Service in the beginning was impeccable and towards the end got a little rough but all in all it was worth every penny! I would definitely go back knowing it might take a minute! read more

I have used this shop for many repairs. They are the only authorized repair shop for Kenetrek boots. Because of this I will no longer be wearing Kenetrek boots. I have had to many bad experiences to list. They messed up several times on jobs. No apologies, no we will fix it. Just excuses and attitude. If you do a complete resole including the urethane on Kenetrek boots they do not fit right after wards. I don't know why this is but I have had several friends have the same issue. Once again. No apologies, no we will fix it. Just excuses and attitude. The last resole I had done cost $170. After picking my jaw up from the floor I asked why and he said they now go over the complete boot, fix anything and give you new laces and insoles. Well, the laces were not as good as the ones that came with the boots and the repairs were just some sort of flexible paste smeared on the boot. The cordura part of the tongue was coming apart and I assumed there would be a professional repair, but all they did was smear this goop over it. It was very unprofessional looking and my $450 boots should not look like a two year old blew his nose on them. There were several spots around the rubber rock protector where it looked like they smeared the same goop. I am assuming there was some slight delamination and that was how they fixed it. Very sloppy. I would strongly recommend not using this store and not buying Kenetrek boots as a direct result of how their only repair facility handles their repairs. read more

I had them add a zipper into a pair of boots. Much of their stitch work has come undone after 3 months. Plus I waited 4 weeks and paid more than the high end of what they said it would cost. Had I known the quality I was overpaying for, I would have just found a different pair of boots. I read the reviews on the two cobblers in bozeman. The other shop's reviews were horrible and Carter's were good. People just complained Carters was expensive and slow. So... I went to Carters. I picked up my boots today. They told me it would take two weeks and called me in 7 days. They charged me $25 and did an absolutely amazing job on my boots. I honestly could not tell which boot was repaired. I don't understand why everyone did not rave about this repair shop. They were friendly, speedy and gave me a brand new pair of boots for $25. I took a pair of leather black pumps to get the heels fixed after a puppy got a hold of them. After about 3 weeks I went back to get them to wear to a wedding and handed over my ticket stub and the sales person went in to the back of the shop and returned empty handed. He claimed that they didn't have them. I asked him to check again and he wouldn't, then blamed me and said that I probably picked them up already and forget about it. I left after being very insulted and called them twice over the next week still hadn't found the shoes. A month later I get a message on my phone, it was Carters and they had finally found them and I could come and get them. The only nice thing they did was not charge me for the work. read more

I am in Bozeman overnight & needed to get new Velcro strips put on my sandals to extend as I could not get them to stick. They sewed on new ones in a few minutes and only charged me $5. I took a pair of boots in to have the instep stretched. I was assured they would be done in time for me to catch a plane to where I'm teaching a horsemanship clinic, a place I obviously I needed the boots. When I went to pick them up at the appointed time, they hadn't even been started. Now I'm out of luck. I'm extremely disappointed in the "service" and absolutely will not be returning. I would never recommend this store to anyone who needs work done in a specific time frame. They'll promise, but they will not deliver. read more

In the last few months, I have brought in several pairs of boots and a roller blade skate(!) for stretching. I also brought in a pair of loafers for new heels. The staff has always been very accommodating and I have been happy with the results. Although they are busy, I usually get the item back within a week or two. I agree with other commenters that their prices seem a bit high, but they are about the same as another cobbler in Bozeman that I tried (who also did a good job on heels for dress shoes). Its been about 3 months now that I purchased a pair of boots from them. I drove from Anaconda specifically for a certain pair of boots that I know they carried after looking them up on the internet. I spotted the boots right away and was checking them out that's when the boot repairman/salesman came up and I would like to try a pair. He said what size and that kind of surprised me since these are 350.00 in my mind I figured they would take a foot measurement this was a big deal and a lot of money for me. I even went over and picked up the foot device and tried to check my own size while he was looking for my size. I was not comfortable with the salesman right away he was just not friendly, seemed he did not want to deal with people and the kicker for me was he was wearing boots that should have been repaired a year ago. The first pair was to small so I went to the next size. I was never asked what width are my feet are and I am saying that because I know that when I looked there boots up they had a D and E width. Its hard to see how boots fit when they are new,very stiff and uncomfortable. But I left with them anyway. Now that I have had them and they are broke in something just did not seem right. One boot is a 1/4 inch wider than the other so that is the boot maker problem! So just take all the time you need when buying something you figure would last you the rest of your life.. read more

Good quality but poor customer service and communication. I dropped off a backpack to have the grommets repaired, they said it should be done in a week's time. 2 weeks passed by and I received no call saying it was done. At this point I desperately needed my bag so I called the store myself. The person that answered had told me it will be done in two days. 5 min later the owner called and told me they don't have grommets in that size or color and that they would have to order them, and it would be another 2 weeks. At this point I was thinking they obviously hadn't even touched my bag! Fast-forward to 3 weeks later I had to call again to check the status on my bag, once again they had told me they haven't ordered the grommets yet. So I waited and waited, until another 2 weeks went by and they finally had it done! I went in to get my bag expecting to walk out without spending a dime, yet they still made me pay $30. Despite the long wait, my bag turned out great! However, if you are looking for a quick fix, and good customer communication/service carters is not the place for you. read more
