We stoped in here for pie because we heard the pie was top notch... after looking at the ingredients list I was bummed to see they used hydrogenated oils and will not be buying pies from them anymore unfortunately but the reason why I am giving such high stars is because of their nuts and bolts selection down stairs and the nice gentleman that helped us. My husband needed a VERY specific bolt for his motorcycle and after he tried a number of other places in town we were excited to have found it! This is vintage ACE Hardware and I love it. This has obviously been around for decades. The floors are wood and slightly creaks when you walk on it. They have everything--don't forget to check out the basement. That's where the loose nails, screws, nuts, etc. are. And of course, you can get anything at an ACE. I bought a yummy pie from California. ACE Hardwares love to carry local and small business products. The employees there love their jobs. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and cheerful. Great store. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. We've typically liked shopping at Carter Bros Ace in Reno because of the convenient location, even though their prices are noticeably higher than other hardware stores. Unfortunately, our recent experiences have been frustrating enough to make us reconsider. On 11/02, we made a purchase and noticed afterward that we were overcharged. After reviewing the receipt, we had to go back and were refunded nearly $26 from a $72 total. Mistakes happen, but we appreciated the refund being processed correctly. However, things got worse when we saw a charge from the store on our credit card dated 11/28--even though neither of us had visited the store that day. We tried repeatedly to get in touch with someone who could explain the charge, but every time we called, the employee who answered said the person who could help wasn't in and to call back the next day. This went on for several days with no progress. Eventually, my husband went into the store, hoping for some answers. Unfortunately, he was again told that no one was available to help. There was no effort to take down our information, no concern shown, no follow-up, and no offer to pass along the issue to a manager. After getting nowhere with the store, we ended up disputing the charge with our bank. We're disappointed by how this was handled. If you shop here, definitely double-check your receipts and monitor your credit card for any unexplained charges. The convenience of a local store only goes so far when the customer service doesn't measure up. read more

So lucky to have this great nearby hardware store. The staff knows exactly, by row and shelf, where everything is in the store ! They have everything you will ever need! And when I say everything, I mean it. I went in for drano and AAA batteries, came out with those, AND a frozen peach pie!!! What?!?! What?!?! At the front of the store they had a freezer full of an incredible array of frozen fruit pies. The guy at the register gave me cooking tips and recommended the egg wash. The pie was wonderful, although it did take significantly longer to bake. I'm so excited to try the rhubarb. With Ace coupons, the prices are good, but their propane tanks are surprisingly expensive. I used to frequent the local ACE Hardware before we moved to Reno. It was my favorite place to shop! So once we moved, rather than going to big box stores, I wanted to shop at our new local ACE. The first couple of trips here were not favorable. The woman at the front desk just didn't care much about helping or being nice. Now I am on a mission to shop locally and help small businesses, rather than shopping at Amazon or bigger chain stores, so I stopped by to find two things on my list. As soon as I walked in, the staff was eager to help me find things. Both the young man and the front desk guy genuinely wanted help and have a good experience. That's nice, don't you think? My new Sthil chainsaw quit working suddenly. I called many places for repair they all said three weeks minimum to get it done. Called Carter brothers and talked to Jon, he said he wasn't busy and to bring it over. I got there and he was very busy it looked like they were remodeling the store. He still dropped what he was doing and went right to work on my saw. Within about ten minutes my saw was working like new. He also had more Sthil parts than anywhere else I had been. Some of the staff are quite friendly, but the manager certainly isn't. When I came back to the store with the original receipt for a return, they refused it since I did not have the original credit card. I was happy to accept either a store credit or an exchange, but they were adamant. I was very calm in suggesting this is not the policy most retail stores have, and that sometimes accounts are inaccessible for a variety of reasons. The manager accused me of being upset and irrational, yet I was extremely calm and patient. It was a clear case of projection (every accusation is a confession) and the only person in the room getting upset was the manager himself. Word of advice: learn to control your emotions and don't make a conflict into something it isn't by blaming your own insecurity and anti-social tendencies on your customers. I had a charge account and everyone there treated me and my crew well. The other day the new owner called me and asked me if I wanted this paint that was out of the system . Look, I'm a woman who rarely goes to the hardware store, it's just not my thing, but when I do need something this is where I go. I live in a 106 year old house and things do fall apart or break from time to time. Once I went it because I thought I needed a new glass doorknob, but when I showed the guy the knob, he showed me how to screw it on, so it wouldn't come off. :) He could have sold me something, but I didn't need it! This is the epitome of the neighborhood hardware store! It's smack dab in the middle of what is now midtown (old SW to us who've been around awhile) Brick, wood floors, big windows. Plenty of parking, but also very walkable if you just need one thing and feel like taking a walk. It's got that old-time vibe. Where they know your name if you stop in enough times. Everyone is friendly and helpful and always at the ready to answer questions. They have 2 floors, bottom one is mostly nuts and bolts, and parts, and doodads, the top one is filled with you name it; paint, bbq stuff, gardening stuff, tools. Most recently when the Corona stuff started I went in looking for alcohol to make sanitizer and when I walked in the cashier said, let's spray your hands (keeping it clean) They said they had been cleaned out along with every other place in town. I walked back out to my car and before I could leave the young man ran out and said they found some in the back. He didn't have to do that...It's a pretty hot commodity and he could have sold to the next customer and not gone to the trouble. Support a local business and come on by. Ace is national, but locations are privately owned. I love the selection, layout, and vibe of this place, so whomever owns it is doing a great job! What a great store! Didn't even know it existed! I needed a specific circuit breaker for one that malfunctioned this weekend. The big box hardware stores didn't have it in stock and I needed instant gratification! Google pointed me to acehardware.com and it said they had it in stock so I ordered it on Saturday night. Sunday morning I went by right at open time and they found the breaker I had ordered the night before. Popped the new one in and I am good to go. Old school Midtown hardware store. Yep, I'm old enough to remember these places before Home Depot. And it's truly the old I grew up with - double stairs that go to the basement for more stuff, squeaky wood floor, and narrow aisles. Enough staff to show you were things are and to answer any questions. You'll literally find tons of household items here, some things you didn't know you needed until you see them on the shelf. Im always amazed when I go in for one thing and find three others things I couldn't live without. The paint area is small, but nice quality and plenty of samples to pick from. In the summer they have a limited selection of plant starters for the garden and some nice flower baskets. Prices vary- some are spot on to the chain stores, some might be slightly higher but it seems easier and friendlier to shop here. The young girl at the cash register was very helpful when my son and I ventured in, looking for a Christmas present. I noticed another worker there addressing another customer by his name, and I was impressed. The store had all of the nifty hardware store like stuff and was well organized and clean. Recently a colleague who lives near Ace Hardware threw me a lil' shade when I mentioned that I had purchased a home improvement-related item at Wal-Mart. I had been to Ace Hardware once before and had had a good experience, so I thought, I should go there more often. Local business, you know? The folks who work at Ace Hardware are very helpful. The store has great charm. They make replacement keys quickly. I found the shower-related items that I needed easily, and someone helped me find the correct screw that I needed to fix my broken towel rack even though I had only a verbal description of what the wall fixture looked like. I have a poured concrete floor, and I have never been sure how to clean it properly. The folks at Ace Hardware helped me figure out what products I needed. Not to be overlooked is how easy it is to park because they have a dedicated parking lot with eight spots. I'm pretty sure this is the only old-school old-fashioned, just-like -you-remember from-your-childhood hardware store in all of Northern Nevada. Right down to the Balsa-Wood gliders at the register that they regularly give away to kids for free. I love this place. Need one screw and washer for a random little project? That will be 32 cents from the Nuts and Bolts section. Need an old furnace filter clip for your 1940's house that's not even made anymore? If you need a pallat of pavers to do your driveway, I'd go to Home Depot. But everything else is good to go with this spot. read more

He was definitely not going to go out of his way to help anyone. He snapped at her to go to the other register and was just plain rude. I've shopped at this little hardware store for years now. Today I went in asking for some speaker wire; just a simple subwoofer project for my vehicle. I had the extreme misfortune of asking the wrong associate for help. He didn't know what I was looking for in the slightest. "I don't **** with that," was what I was told. I asked if maybe he could at least point me in another direction so he suggested one of the other associates might have a better idea. I inquired if he might ask these other associates for me. Not the big box DIY stores, the small stores that have things just for the town you're in! Walk through the hardware store in Blairsden, CA. It could take you a long time! It took my dad and I over an hour! Well, Carter Bros Ace Hardware store is just like that. They even have a big a@@ fan to boot! Don't believe me? Go in and see for yourself. It's on the first floor hanging from the ceiling. Layout: First floor: Paint, plumbing, tools Basement: Hardware (screws, nuts, bolts, screening, electrical) Assistance: You are never far from help. Unlike the big box stores, the people that are employed here have done what you're doing. If they don't know, they can usually find the answer. Craftsman: If you're interested in Craftsman products, they carry them! Which is important since you can't pick them up at Sears at Meadowood anymore! Parking: This can be a pain. Your best bet is to approach from Virginia St. and turn west into their ONE WAY parking lot. or head west onto a ONE WAY Caliente St. There is street parking. or You can park on Virginia St. ---------------- Bottom Line Regardless of the project I'm doing, I'd rather go to Carter Bros than the big box stores. This place has got to be 100 years old! They have nearly everything I need. They are closer to the house than the big box stores! Love this Ace Hardware Store! I appreciate the fact that I can walk in the door and actually find an employee who is eager and happy to help customers. I volunteered to get some missing drip system pieces we were missing during a yard project when my husband and his buddy were unloading rock. I timidly went into Ace (I imagine this is how men might feel with their wife's grocery list) and was greeted by a friendly face. Found exactly what I needed and got the hell out of dodge! During this crazy Covid time I appreciated not having to socially distance in a line of 80 people and get help right away. I love this place. I'd so much rather go to Ace than ANYWHERE ELSE. Home Depot and Lowes don't hold a candle to this place. Yeah sure those big stores carry more, but trying to get assistance at Lowes and Home Depot is like getting your teeth pulled, and when you finally get assistance, the person is usually completely illiterate. At Ace this is NEVER the case. The thing I REALLY like about ACE is that I can waltz in and buy a single nut or bolt or washer. And I can find those small things very quickly. I dislike having to purchase a sack full of screws or washers or nuts if I only need one, and that's what you're expected to do at the Lowes or Home Depot. Plus all the people in this store know where things are and can generally take you right to what you're looking for, and when you're tired and frustrated and trying to get something done that counts for a LOT. read more

So I'm adding a solid state drive to my new notebook computer and I run into a problem. The screws in the computer are way too tight for the jewelers screwdrivers I have. I need MORE POWER (grunt like Tim The Toolman Taylor). So I go to Carter Brothers Ace Hardware. They not only have regular size screwdrivers, I got one with an extra long handle. The screws that absolutely would not turn with a jewelers screwdriver come out with almost no effort. Plus, they had a staff member who took me right to where I could ge this long-handled Phillips head No. 1.
