I live in the area and have driven past this resort / store hundreds of times and never stopped. They've now got a customer for life! Memorial Day weekend we were going camping in the desert and realized we packed a nice bottle of wine, but no opener. Not wanting to head back into Tahoe, we stopped at every general market and store but no one had a corkscrew. This was our last stop- and not only did they have one, but they gave it to us and were the absolute nicest humans. There's a lot to the store and I suggest stopping in, getting some ice cream, and enjoying the river. There's cute cabins, nice campsites, and isn't it nice knowing that you will be taken care of by some great humans? I'll make a point to stop by as often as possible now. Stayed july 18th-20th. Great sites, great weather, and awesome fishing! Not a lot of shade so bring your shade!!! Water was a perfect temperature. The portapotties were nice but had no toilet paper! My older grandparents (in there 80's) made it out and were able to walk around our site. It's very rocky though and the ground is not very even, so check with your elders ahead of time. Overall, Carson river resort is a great spot. We had so much fun! read more

The cabin we were in was so quaint and relaxing. We could hear the river just across the road from our porch. The owner made everyone feel like family from the potluck dinner to the 6 year old's birthday celebration. Wish it was closer to home so we could stay here more often. read more

The 125 year old River cabin was very cute, rustic and right next to the Carson River. Unfortunately, it was extremely dirty. Floors had not been swept or vacuumed. Blankets were full of what looked like dog hairs. Photos tell all. Midweek $250/night! read more

Drove into their lot and parked around 9 PM on a Sunday. Front store was still open. Was inside my vehicle and checking on the phone for the cost to stay at their primitive campground up the road, when an employee came out to ask how I was doing. Replied that I needed to know how much it'd cost for a campsite, which could be a simple one number response, but the employee insisted that I must come in to speak with the owner. I thought that was unnecessary and indicated to leave. The employee returned inside, spoke to the owner, and approached me again with the information: $40/night. For primitive camping (basically empty spots, some by the creek, some not, and portable toilets). Must be the "resort" tax for being grossly overpriced, considering other free or low cost camping options (some by the creek) in the area. read more

These cute little cabins in the woods are exactly what we were looking for. It's not fancy, and the only source of heat is the gas burning stove. But you do get a fire pit out back and a feeling of being away from it all. I also like the well stocked general store on site. Even though you're out in the mountains, you can get what you need. Most importantly, we accidentally left a quite expensive watch behind in our cabin (it had fallen under the nightstand). The proprietor told us she had found it and MAILED IT BACK TO US. Free of charge. Wow. Tell me what hotel or other public accommodations you would stay in where that would happen. We so appreciate their honesty and kind service. read more

Campground in need of a host. The campsites are across the street from the (very lovely-looking) cabins. Right on the river, which is a fishing mecca. We arrived here mid-afternoon (with reservation). The host (at the cabins) told us that there were only 2 occupied campsites. Great! We got our assigned campsite and headed over, only to find that one large family group had taken over 3-4 adjacent campsites, including our own. We occupied ourselves while the family moved down to the end campsite and proceeded to hang out there and fish all day, until after dark, when they finally left. Pretty sure they didn't pay to stay that day, but the host obviously has no control over comings and goings. The morning of our departure, the host drove through the campground and told us that were bears at the end campsite (with the family group) and that we "might hear gunshots" that night. We didn't ask for details, and thankfully weren't there that night. Campsite has a little fire ring and port-a-potty nearby. No potable water at the campsite. Good fishing, if that's your thing (oh, and TONS of fishing line and assorted detritus, which we picked up and threw away). read more

This is as good as it gets for this part of the region, for it is rugged. There are no hookups along the river, but it is a better camping experience for those who like quiet. You are either going to love this place, or find reasons not to, such as the lack of modern amenities. The staff is courteous and helpful. Again, this is for the camper who really wants to get away from the RV campground feel, and more of a rugged outback excursion. Great trout fishing along the river as well! read more

This is a review for the campsite, not the lodge. If camping is part of your game when cycling in or just visiting the Sierras in Alpine County, this is a really good option. Many of the riverside sites are pretty spacious for several tents and up to 3 cars, and the sites are pretty spread apart for good privacy. While the campground doesn't have services like showers, it does have several clean portapotties. For showers, you can always go to Grover Hot Springs park and pay a small fee to use the showers there. Location wise for training cyclists, it's good because it's only a few miles further along 89 from Turtle Rock, and near the 89/4 junction, which means a "4-Pass" self-supported Death Ride without a car shuttle to your start is entirely feasible. read more

The resort is under new management. Todd, who ran the resort so well for many years and built a lot of customer loyalty, is no longer there. I question whether the owners are committed to maintaining the resort--the cabin we stayed in recently had a window hanging on one hinge, and a mini-fridge had been swapped out for a small shelf unit. read more

Bugs, Bark & Dirt! Cabins, tent sites this is a good place to stay for awhile. I have been fishing, camping & hunting this area for over 20 years. It used to be called the East Fork Resort named changed once Walt the owner sold it to some Silicon Valley Freaks that's when the prices for everything went up 75%. But if you need it they got it. There's a store for general items, ice, beer, snacks. Also a good selection of fishing gear. if you want to fish planters go across the highway and use lures or salmon eggs, they stock this area pretty good with some huge fish. Average 6lb or larger all rainbows although if you work hard enough you might catch a cutthroat. They have cabins for rent which I have stayed in, some with Small kitchens, there small cozy and good for two, if you need a larger space rent a tent site on the river. Bring shade cause the sun rips in the summer, like over 90 on some days. Most of all enjoy, pick up your trash and don't be a Silicon Valley jerk when you come up here, drive slowly. This is a terrible place to stay....I just spend over $170.00 a night for the worse-than-less "rustic" cabin ever...Cabin #3...stay away...you can see day light through the ply wood from every wall, but that isn't even the start... If you want a shower, or some place to stay that won't give you a sinus infection due to how incredibly filthy it is, don't stay here....not enough water pressure to take a shower for the 2 nights I stayed. When I brought that up to the Inn Keepers, they seemed to know that Cabin 3 has bad water pressure and suggested I shower with the people camping up the hill.....I am usually pretty chill about this stuff really??? I wish I was camping which is much more affordable. I am totally cool with a cheap place to stay, camping, etc but for over $170.00 a night, COME ON! I am going to call the Health Dept on this place as I really do have a sinus infection from the dirt everywhere.... Markleeville has limited everything....I get that, but if you have to stay there, camp some place other than at the Carson River "resort"....at least that won't cost you so much money and you can expect dirt, etc.... read more

This review is also for the dry camping campsite. This is not a good camping site. I was very nervous staying there at night. The fishing is great but people just come and goes as they please all day long. There is no control over it. You are better staying at the regular campsite and going to the dry site to fish. This place does not accept any cancelations even with 72 hours notice. CHECK OUT THE CAMPING SITE BEFORE BOOKING OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE OUT THE MONEY LIKE WE WERE. read more

This is probably the hottest campgrounds I have ever been to in the summer. The sun just bakes down here relentlessly and therefore I have never seen it that crowded. The smart ones go to Grover Hot Springs because they have trees and cover. Therefore I have never stayed here, just took a look around, drove through and made a beeline to Grover. If you want to fish though, this is THE spot. Carson Riiver has fast water with deep pools and the huge fish (trout) love it here and grow large. Get tips from the Markleeville General Store up the road, they'll steer you right as far as lures and bait setup. read more

Cabins Suck I'm a traveler and a camper, and for $100+ per night, I expected something remarkable--it was NOT. 1940's kit cabin with NO updates since then! Plywood walls, teeny dated kitchen, bathroom barely fits the claw tub. That's #6 which overlooks the not so lovely RV park! Spend an extra $35 and go to Sorensen's in Hope Valley--you'll be very happy there!! read more

We stayed in the river cabin and had a wonderful time. Even though dated, the cabin is 100 years old, it is clean and kept up well. Plenty of room for 4 people and it also had a table to sit at and play games. The location was amazing and having a fire right next to the river was fun and relaxing. This place is OUTSTANDING! After looking at the other reviews I wasn't quite sure but then noticed how old they were. Phil took over a few years ago and with his sidekick, Connie, the cabins are kept very clean and they are the most gracious hosts! Always cooking food for everyone (at no charge) and making sure we had everything we needed. In another review it mentioned no running water. I believe that is in campground (which I have not stayed). The cabins have a small kitchenette, full bathroom and everything that is needed for a comfortable stay. My family has been camping or staying in cabins for 18 years! Carson River Resort (East Fork Resort ) is the bomb! If you don't like true dry camping, stay home, it's not the place for you! Our family has a huge family reunion here every year in May, family members come as far away as New York! My youngest daughter had her wedding in the grassy area by the cabins! It was one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever been to! Todd, the manager always goes out of his way to make sure his guests have everything they need! Let me preface this by saying we have been going here for over 10 years. On this trip the guy who always gave us great advice on where and how to fish was gone. Instead there are a few kids in their 20's manning the general store and demanded a 50% unrefundable deposit prior to making the trip. They, in general terms , -don't know the river very well. I understand the place is now under 'new management" I personally - hope it's not them. We stayed in the cabins and left them cleaner than we found them. I won't go into the details. We did manage some quality fish from the river, which was of couse a huge plus - from Fish and Game. I noticed the river had not nearly as many wild fish as years past, most likely due to the fishing pressure and water levels. I will be back to fish, But - I won't be spending my money here. Our cabin this trip was far too near the RV part of the facility where it seemed to me it was more like a retirement home for day drinking and drunks than a fishing cabin resort. There are some residents that pound the beer -andthe fishing holes - you paid big money to come up and fish constantly. I'm done with this place and so is my family. read more

The cabins are run down and service is non extremely lacking. Way overpriced for cabin s that lack decent windows or operating bath facilities. Our sink would not drain and informing the onsite manager failed to get any results. The shower door does not work and overall these cabins at $139 a night are way over priced read more

I'm not sure what anyone (who's written a review) expected, nor what they wanted out of a small town resort, but this place is amazing! My experiences have always been satisfactory whether I am camping or staying in one of the cabins. Todd (manager) is friendly, helpful and busts his a** to make sure you're satisfied. I've been coming to the (East Fork) Carson to fish and hunt for at least 10 years, and have an annual Father-Son fishing trip every July at the Resort. Our group is usually large, between 12 and 18, and we rent the River Cabin and one to two campsites. Never had any problems, always a great time. It seems most complaints on here are from the non-camping type. Well, if you don't like dirt, animals, bugs, and must have a warm shower to hop into every morning/night, then the answer is simple: Don't camp! I'd recommend this place to anyone and everyone who enjoys action packed fishing, beautiful scenery, and a chance to see a part of this country that remains mostly untouched by humans. Truly a pleasure and blessing every time I am able to make it over the pass and fish, camp, or admire. read more

Great dry camping, outstanding location! Great people! Under new ownership/management as of about Feb 2018. The Carson River RV Resort is a nice little place, about 5 miles south of Markleeville, CA on CA 89/4. It consists of about 6 or 8 small, rustic-looking log cabins, about 6 or 8 RV sites with full hookups, and a separate dry (no running water, electricity, or sewer) 9-site campground, about 200 yards down the road, with pull-through RV sites and tent sites, right on the Carson River. From reading previous reviews, it seems that the place has had its ups and downs over the years, affected by the owners and managers. It apparently changed owners again in about Feb 2018, and it looks things are good and getting better. For one thing, Todd, the hero of all the previous good reviews, is back. And I can tell you from personal experience, he is one of the nicest human beings you'll ever meet. Plus, he's on a first-name basis with every fish in the river - just ask him something about fishing there to get him started. He's great! We were there with a medium-size group of Off-Roaders for the weekend before memorial day 2018, and had reserved the end two campsites (6 and 7) in the dry-camping area. The sites are right next to river (like "be-careful-staggering-around-after-dark" close to the river) and you get the wonderful noise from the rushing water all the time. Though the road is relatively close, we didn't hear it at all above the sound of the river, and traffic on the road at night was nil. The RV sites in the campground all appear to be easy pull-through sites, and there was a lot of extra area to park other vehicles. The tent sites in our area were mostly sandy base, with nearby trees. Each site has a picnic table and nice fire ring. There were 3 or 4 brand-new portapotties for the 9-site campground, and they were serviced at noon on Friday, so they were neat and ready for the weekend. We had a total of 4 RVs and 3 tents in our group, and Todd let us also use site 5. There was plenty of room for all our jeeps and even a couple of jeep-towing trailers. We had a great time, and I absolutely loved the campground. I will be back for sure. I HIGHLY recommend this place. We stopped a couple times in the main area with the cabins and full-hookup sites. Everything looked neat and well-maintained, but rustic. I think the cabins all use one separate restroom, which was clean and working fine when we went there. The RV sites had good hookups, and used a fair amount of artificial turf to keep the dust down. The little store has some very basic essentials: your basic cases of beer, a nice selection of fishing tackle, a few T-shirts, and some other food & drinks. They do not sell fishing licenses there, so if you want one, or if you want a larger selection of food, drink, and supplies, stop in Markleeville, 5 minutes up the road. Todd happened to be in the store when we arrived, and was very accommodating about sites, places to park trailers, etc. A really nice guy. This place is not a soft, cushy, well-decorated resort hotel with room service, so don't expect that (as some previous reviews seem to). But if you're an outdoors-person who loves the mountains, and a nice trout river, and fun/interesting backroads to explore, it's hard to do better than Carson River RV Resort. read more

We started going camping in Markleeville when we lived in So. Calif. We would travel the two day trip every summer for 20 years. After moving up to the area, we discovered Carson River Resort. We absolutely love this place and have camped there throughout the summer months every year for the past twelve years. This campground accommodates both tent and trailer camping. The campground is spotless and almost all the spaces have a river view, which is fabulous! There is no running water or flush toilets, but the portable toilets are always kept very clean. The fishing is absolutely the best!! You won't be disappointed if you love to fish!! read more

Spent 3 days camping on the E. Carson River at the resort's campground. Lovely. Todd gave me some helpful fishing advice. Muddler Minnow was effective pattern. My wife, after buying some birthday candles asked Chris (the owner) if he knew anyone in town who might have a cake for sale. He called around for us but couldn't locate one. So he baked us one! This is the last place I would ever stay again. Made reservations 3 week in advance for a spot on the river. When I went to check in I was given some lame excuse that the site numbers had been changed so now my sport was no longer available. The tried to stick me in a spot with solid river rock that I couldn't even get my trailer into. They then took me to the campground where several spots along the river were vacant, but I couldn't have. Ended up about 100+ yards from the water right next to the highway. Was promised wood for my trouble and didn't even get that. Would have took my money back, but nothing else was available anywhere, so I was stuck. I just got back from the Carson River Resort. The resort itself was quite nice. There are 8 cabins, 15 RV spaces, and a campground. The resort has a general store stocked with everything that you needed for fishing and cooking. There is also a gas station out front. The person who runs the place, Todd does a great job at keeping the place looking nice, fixing any problems that may come up, and making sure that all of his guests needs are met. I forgot to bring some coffee along, and Todd made sure that I didn't go without my coffee in the morning. When it came time to go fishing, Todd made sure that I had the correct fishing equipment, bait, and instructions on where to fish in the river. There were three of us. We booked cabin #1. It is the only cabin that has two bedrooms in it. One bedroom had a queen bed in it which my wife and I slept in. The other bedroom had two twin beds in it. Both bedrooms were nicely furnished with pictures on the walls, and the beds were very comfortable. The cabin had a nicely furnished kitchen, with a stove, refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave. The only downside to the cabin was that the bedrooms did not have any doors, and privacy was comprised to some extent. I would defiantly stay at the Carson River Resort again. read more

This is my review of the Carson River Resort after our trip to the area yesterday. Until yesterday, we loved staying there. Imagine our surprise when we showed up and the store was "closed" and you had to see an 'attendant". Apparently some of the shareholders sold their shares to new people and they made some changes that have forced out Todd - one of the nicest people you could ever meet. We watched cars slow to stop for a purchase in the store but kept on going when they saw it was "dark" and "closed". Loss of money going on now. So sad. You can't email the resort because their email system kicks back. So how do you voice your disappointment to them? We have never stayed in the cabins before but have stayed many times in the campgrounds. Thinking not anymore unless they bring back Todd. You cannot run a successful business by "closing" the store during the day. People stop often and that is how you get new vacationers to stay in the campground or cabins. read more

This review is for the lodge / cabins. We were looking for a comfortable, cozy cabin to stay at during the Death Ride--and this was it! Contacted Chad, the resort's manager and he was very customer focused, spent time with me on the phone to describe the various cabins (BTW--their website also does a great job of this, too), and we booked cabin 2. It was perfect--two double beds, nice clean bathroom, and a porch with a picnic table. Between making the reservation and the Death Ride, I contacted him a couple of other times for more info and he was just great! Since there are very few nice places to stay in the Markleeville area, I kind of hate to write such a good review because we may never be able to get a room here again!!
