Halibut in burre blanc!

Hidden gem on Highway 88 near Kirkwood. The staff are very approachable, the wine and beer list is broad without being overwhelming. The burger and sandos in the lounge are first rate and the dining room menu is over the top.

Beautiful day for fishing on an October Friday. Surprisingly not that many people here so it is serene. Colors are chsnging too. Found a nice place to fish too. Check it out.

If you're in the Kirkwood area , this is the place to go for food and drinks! I love the views from the lounge and the food never disappoints!

We had an awesome dinner at Caples Lake Resort. Everything about it greatly exceeded our expectations. The dining room (and the resort) is very rustic but comfortable and has one of the best views of any restaurant I have been to. Our server, Thomas, was very informative, polite and attentive. The heirloom tomato burrata salad had nice, ripe tomatoes and was flavorful. We tried a crabcake appetizer special that was fresh, delicious and came with wonderful Miso flavored vegetables. I hope it becomes a regular item on their menu. Their halibut main course was fresh, light and flavorful. Their wild mushroom ravioli had a delightful truffle flavor to it. I can't wait for my next dinner here! Thank you, Caples Lake Resort.

The resort is great for relaxing and taking a break. Wonderful staff, we rented cabin #2 and every view is a postcard image, nice deck with seating and a table, BBQ, so you have everything you need. The beds are clean and comfortable, good size bathroom etc. Stocked kitchen items, with coffee maker and microwave and oven, so nice. Little potbelly stove if it gets cold, but was comfortable when we stayed.

What an amazing place. The owners, Mike and Gwen are amazing. Their hospitality was above and beyond. Mike offered to launch my boat with his front loader when we arrived and there was no parking for my truck and boat. Gwen was amazing always answering my emails promptly when making my reservations and questions I had leading up to our checkin. The food in their restaurant is amazing. One of the best dinners we had in a long time!

Relaxing family owned resort with an incredible chef, creating the menu. 20 minutes away from Kirkwood Village, where the atmosphere staff and surroundings will help you relax after a day of play in the snow There is a fireplace in the main area with glass windows overlooking the mountain lake

We had an amazing b-day celebration at Caples. The views during sunset were stunning. The service was friendly and pleasant and the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend it, we will be back!

Caples Lake Resort is right on the lake with all cabins having a lake view.

You cannot beat the location of the cabins on Caples Lake Resort. They have a great boat ramp and lots of rentals guaranteed to be tons of fun for the whole family. All of the cabins have barbecues and fire pits. One of the really big perks at staying at Caples Lake is that they have a gourmet restaurant in their lodge building. There is also a bar And food available in the bar area. The food is the best that I have ever tasted. I think they must have a five star chef. The owners are new and they're very wonderful, friendly and just doing a great job to even improve on the resort. We have been coming for many years but this summer was the best trip ever with the advent of that gourmet restaurant! The price of the lodging and the food was very reasonable and we often go to the resort just to have dinner even though we're not staying there. The food is that good and the view from the restaurant is so beautiful.

We had the most amazing meal, the chef has a great talent for combining interesting flavors, gorgeous presentation in an incredible setting. Worth the drive from South Lake! Awesome service as well!

How have I never reviewed this place? It's our home resort and we love going here so much. If you…read moreare mostly about the skiing, and then relaxing, this is the place for you. It has plenty of intermediate and advanced slopes, off-piste runs, long blues and wide bowls. I don't do them as much but my husband enjoys the powder and tree runs, and there are a couple terrain parks. For beginners it's mixed: there a two base areas, one that is better suited for absolute beginners (Timber Creek) that has a lodge, magic carpet, and 2 beginner lifts. The other base area (Kirkwood Village) is better for more advanced beginners and intermediates, but does have one beginner lift (Snowkirk). Just make sure there's enough snow that everything is running (e.g. maybe not right now as spring conditions mean snow is melting fast and things are closing.) There's a resort shuttle that runs around the valley between base areas and various accommodations. Who is Kirkwood NOT good for: nightlife enthusiasts, fashionistas, foodies who can't cook or didn't bring their own food. There is NO shopping (just one general store with high prices limited hours), limited dining options (mostly during the day), and not much nightlife (two bars during the day and one at night.) There are some dining options 10-20 minute drives away, including one very good restaurant with a view (Caples Lake Resort) but be prepared for crowds on busy nights. Generally we stay in our condo and cook (and bring all our own food due to lack of grocery shopping.) If you are prepared and are staying near/on the mountain (can't get closer than The Mountain Club! literally ski in/ski out), it's a great place to ski and stay. If you are looking for more shopping/nightlife/dining out, go fight the crowds in Tahoe. We love it here and recommend it fully!

My 13 year old daughter and 14 year old nephew went on the bunny hill with my husband and brother to learn and it was the perfect terrain for their level. I signed my 7 & 9 year old up for the ski school and their teacher was JEAN who was just AMAZING. She was so patient and kid and taught the kids skills and essentials to they easily mastered their first lesson and beyond exceeded my expectations! Customer service wise Kirkwood staff were all awesome. I wrongly thought they had tubing because or google but found out when I got there that was NOT true. They were able to squeeze my 2 little ones into lessons that afternoon from 1:15-3:45 and that included all the gear they needed, a lunch, access to the lifts, and that ran me $630 total for 2 kids. My adult and teen tickets I bought for my husband and brother and 2 older kids were over the phone and their customer service was also amazing. We were not able to make it on our reserved day and they let us change to the next day, no hassle. We just had to go in person to the ticket booth and tell them and they changed them for us. Parking situation. You have to reserve parking before had. We pre-paid $20 for the orange lot and we were able to park right by the entrance, and we got there around 11:30am. Right now the cabin/lounge area near those lifts is under construction but there is a free shuttle that comes every 15-minutes to drive you just 2 minutes up the road to the other location that has more ski lifts and lots of places to eat. Once here I got some hot chocolate and chicken chili nachos at THE WALL, and both of them were BOMB and I love going places to eat so I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, and for only $18 the portions were huge and me & my sister shared and still couldn't finish. We wanted to go back and try more things but everything was closed by 4:00pm, so eat early or you have to drive a ways after do.

Gayle and I took a pleasant afternoon drive down Highway 88 towards Kirkwood yesterday. After a…read moreloop through a very dead off-season Kirkwood, we had 5 PM dinner reservations at the Caples Lake Resort Restaurant. We're still a number of weeks off fall colors, but this is the route (to and from the Woodfords) for them. The Caples Lake Resort sort of reminds me of Drakesbad (at Lassen National Park), complete with upstairs lodge rooms, separate rustic cabins, and a very nice lounge and dining room area. The only local comparison might be the Kit Carson Lodge down the road at Silver Lake, which may be a separate trip in the near future. As Gayle would put it, we enjoyed a "kick ass" meal in a spectacular setting. We sat at the outside deck with a full view at the lake for a leisurely and well paced dining experience lasting maybe an hour and a half Shade umbrellas and heaters were available, but we really didn't need them, aside from having a light jacket at the ready. We were told by our most excellent server (Jennifer), that the view is even more spectacular in the winter, but at a window table inside. Maybe we'll do that on a weekday to increase our reservations chances vs. the Kirkwood Ski crowd just few miles down the road. I was convinced coming in that I was going to order their CLR Burger, but quickly changed my plans when the whole trout stuffed with crab meat special was announced. It was one of those splurges that I'd easily make again. The 3rd delicious splurge was our shared dessert: A flourless chocolate cake with lava features, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzles and a crunchy cookie on top. All sorts of flavor, temperature, and texture combinations! In between my trout and our dessert, was Gayle's very tasty pork chop. The portions were generous, but certainly had enough left over for dessert, which really did fill us up. Besides coffee with the cake, we both ordered the French Rose (off a fine wine list) which we felt went well with our food choices. The restaurant also had a few tempting salad choices, but we wisely decided to skip that in anticipation for dessert. It was about a 50 minute drive home through the mountains and sunset. We were full, happy, and oh so glad we made the trip. Caples Lake is not Lake Tahoe, but for this restaurant experience where every aspect added up to more than the sum of its parts, we weren't sure it could have been better. And feeling that we almost had the place to ourselves.

Without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in the Kirkwood area. The service is the best, and the clientele really treat dining here as a special occasion. Such a wonderful atmosphere! People all around us were raving about how great the food was. I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood, but I didn't find anything particularly spectacular. However, I did enjoy the flavorful artichokes, though they had very little meat and were quite watery. The crab cakes were also tasty, and the mushroom ravioli was delicious. It was quite an expensive meal, but I suppose everything is these days. If you want a nice meal, this is the place to come. There's very little else of this caliber besides Stonefly in Markleeville. We are so happy that after decades, a wonderful restaurant has returned to Caples Lake Resort!

I'm not staying overnight at the lodge, but coming here to enjoy the nice restaurant they have here and the outdoor dining. I hear they have a real trained chef here doing some great dinners. The food here is basic lunch items like salads and burgers and sandwiches and of course french fries! Prices are reasonable considering you're way out in the middle of nowhere and someone has to pay to get all the supplies out here. We started with some Parmesan fries... very nice with a beer! My friend had a bacon cheeseburger with fries and I had a big salad. Both were made properly and tasted great sitting outside enjoying the quiet outdoors. After lunch we went for a walk down to the lake ... just beautiful! I'll review the lodging if I ever stay here.

We stayed in the Stone Pine room, which is one of the smaller rooms, but it was a good enough size for a couple, had a private entrance, and did not share any walls with other rooms. Very peaceful and quiet. Keep in mind there was no cell service in this room (Verizon), due to the more secluded location, but the wifi worked great. The star of the show were the outdoor soaking tubs, which really made the experience so special. The tubs are more like bathtubs than jacuzzis, with temperature adjustments which was perfect for being pregnant, and no yucky chlorine smell after. Amazing! The breakfasts were delicious each day and part of the magic of the bed and breakfast. Breakfast was delivered to the room promptly and the owners were willing to accommodate my dietary restriction. Coffee/tea was available via Keurig in the rooms (Starbucks and Peet's pods) with plenty of cream and sugar options. The only downside to our stay was that we ended up having to lose our *full* pay for an expensive massage package due to a personal medical emergency. I am not docking stars on this rating because I understand they are running a business, we signed the policy, etc. This is just my personal opinion on a unique situation for you as a potential guest to know. Because they contract out for their spa services, just beware they do not have a forgiving policy. I happened to have a horribly timed medical emergency at the time of our massage. The masseuses were already onsite and we felt terrible, but I was physically unable to get the massage and needed to go to the hospital promptly. We informed the owners what was going on every step of the way, and they were kind and understanding in the moment given a bad situation. However, I was disappointed they offered no support with brainstorming a potential reschedule (we were willing to pay more), offer a partial refund, small future discount, etc... nothing. It was honestly just crickets from them and seemed to be unsaid that it was not their problem. This might come down to personal opinion, but it felt cold and dampened our experience. I ended up having to be the one to reach out to the owner via text, and again in person when we returned to the Inn to inquire about a reschedule or any support with the matter. The owner stated there were no slots available, no refunds, and cited having to put strict policies in place due to people in the past missing massages for arriving late, oversleeping, etc. Again, this just felt cold considering the terrible morning scare we had, which clearly was different than just being irresponsible. This kind of humanity in hard situations is what sets certain businesses apart for me in extenuating circumstances, and keeps guests coming back. Other than this, we had a wonderful stay and would choose to revisit the Eden Vale Inn given all the other great and accommodating features of our stay.
