It has plenty of intermediate and advanced slopes, off-piste runs, long blues and wide bowls. I don't do them as much but my husband enjoys the powder and tree runs, and there are a couple terrain parks. For beginners it's mixed: there a two base areas, one that is better suited for absolute beginners (Timber Creek) that has a lodge, magic carpet, and 2 beginner lifts. The other base area (Kirkwood Village) is better for more advanced beginners and intermediates, but does have one beginner lift (Snowkirk). Just make sure there's enough snow that everything is running (e.g. maybe not right now as spring conditions mean snow is melting fast and things are closing.) There's a resort shuttle that runs around the valley between base areas and various accommodations. Who is Kirkwood NOT good for: nightlife enthusiasts, fashionistas, foodies who can't cook or didn't bring their own food. There is NO shopping (just one general store with high prices limited hours), limited dining options (mostly during the day), and not much nightlife (two bars during the day and one at night.) There are some dining options 10-20 minute drives away, including one very good restaurant with a view (Caples Lake Resort) but be prepared for crowds on busy nights. Generally we stay in our condo and cook (and bring all our own food due to lack of grocery shopping.) If you are prepared and are staying near/on the mountain (can't get closer than The Mountain Club! literally ski in/ski out), it's a great place to ski and stay. If you are looking for more shopping/nightlife/dining out, go fight the crowds in Tahoe. We love it here and recommend it fully!

My 13 year old daughter and 14 year old nephew went on the bunny hill with my husband and brother to learn and it was the perfect terrain for their level. I signed my 7 & 9 year old up for the ski school and their teacher was JEAN who was just AMAZING. She was so patient and kid and taught the kids skills and essentials to they easily mastered their first lesson and beyond exceeded my expectations! Customer service wise Kirkwood staff were all awesome. I wrongly thought they had tubing because or google but found out when I got there that was NOT true. They were able to squeeze my 2 little ones into lessons that afternoon from 1:15-3:45 and that included all the gear they needed, a lunch, access to the lifts, and that ran me $630 total for 2 kids. My adult and teen tickets I bought for my husband and brother and 2 older kids were over the phone and their customer service was also amazing. We were not able to make it on our reserved day and they let us change to the next day, no hassle. We just had to go in person to the ticket booth and tell them and they changed them for us. Parking situation. You have to reserve parking before had. We pre-paid $20 for the orange lot and we were able to park right by the entrance, and we got there around 11:30am. Right now the cabin/lounge area near those lifts is under construction but there is a free shuttle that comes every 15-minutes to drive you just 2 minutes up the road to the other location that has more ski lifts and lots of places to eat. Once here I got some hot chocolate and chicken chili nachos at THE WALL, and both of them were BOMB and I love going places to eat so I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, and for only $18 the portions were huge and me & my sister shared and still couldn't finish. We wanted to go back and try more things but everything was closed by 4:00pm, so eat early or you have to drive a ways after do.

But after Vail acquired Kirkwood, they totally broke the Kirkwood Inn, and until Caples reopened with new management, there were no other options for dinner. 20 years ago, we enjoyed going to the restaurant at Caples Lake during the winter, but they stopped being open in the winter many years ago. Gwen Nicolli and her husband bought the Caples Lake resort a few years ago and completely refurbished the restaurant. In winter and summer, the restaurant offers beautiful views of Caples Lake. So last year, in late winter, we tried out the new restaurant there, and it was fantastic. More impressive, we brought along a friend who was vegan, and they were able to accommodate him. My wife is a vegetarian, and they have a fantastic lentil burger. We've been back since, and have had fantastic service every time. This year, Peter, the original chef after the Nicolli's reopened the restaurant, is back. We will be going back there for dinner tomorrow night and really look forward to it!

After a…read moreloop through a very dead off-season Kirkwood, we had 5 PM dinner reservations at the Caples Lake Resort Restaurant. We're still a number of weeks off fall colors, but this is the route (to and from the Woodfords) for them. The Caples Lake Resort sort of reminds me of Drakesbad (at Lassen National Park), complete with upstairs lodge rooms, separate rustic cabins, and a very nice lounge and dining room area. The only local comparison might be the Kit Carson Lodge down the road at Silver Lake, which may be a separate trip in the near future. As Gayle would put it, we enjoyed a "kick ass" meal in a spectacular setting. We sat at the outside deck with a full view at the lake for a leisurely and well paced dining experience lasting maybe an hour and a half Shade umbrellas and heaters were available, but we really didn't need them, aside from having a light jacket at the ready. We were told by our most excellent server (Jennifer), that the view is even more spectacular in the winter, but at a window table inside. Maybe we'll do that on a weekday to increase our reservations chances vs. the Kirkwood Ski crowd just few miles down the road. I was convinced coming in that I was going to order their CLR Burger, but quickly changed my plans when the whole trout stuffed with crab meat special was announced. It was one of those splurges that I'd easily make again. The 3rd delicious splurge was our shared dessert: A flourless chocolate cake with lava features, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzles and a crunchy cookie on top. All sorts of flavor, temperature, and texture combinations! In between my trout and our dessert, was Gayle's very tasty pork chop. The portions were generous, but certainly had enough left over for dessert, which really did fill us up. Besides coffee with the cake, we both ordered the French Rose (off a fine wine list) which we felt went well with our food choices. The restaurant also had a few tempting salad choices, but we wisely decided to skip that in anticipation for dessert. It was about a 50 minute drive home through the mountains and sunset. We were full, happy, and oh so glad we made the trip. Caples Lake is not Lake Tahoe, but for this restaurant experience where every aspect added up to more than the sum of its parts, we weren't sure it could have been better. And feeling that we almost had the place to ourselves.

Cons: no curtains. They finally brought us one and we used a sheet for the other slider. The oven had grease all over the bottom so it smoked the cabin out. The railing is not to code. Just a 2x4 across it. My little old dog fell off the deck. So if you have a child I would recommend a different cabin. My dog is sore but she is okay.

He showed us around the property as well as our room all while maintaining a chill, conversational demeanor with us. The Pioneer Room was cute, clean, and functional. The kitchenette was the perfect place for us to enjoy our charcuterie dinner and wine that we brought along. The gas fireplace is connected to the thermostat so the room stayed at a perfect temperature over night as the fall temperatures were already dropping. We took part in the breakfast each day. Even if you are not a waffle fan, these waffles are amazing. Light, fluffy, crispy, and sweet! Plus, so many options for toppings. I loaded mine up with fruit and whipped cream! We also enjoyed some wine and cheese during the happy hour. I wish we had been able to partake in the nightly s'mores. I was impressed that they offer all three food times every day! Some other amenities that are available include a massive DVD collection, board games, a small arcade room with old school video games, honors bar, adults only patio, and free bikes for day use. Also, the location is essentially the last property before entering the forest and trails along the South Shore, so it really is the perfect spot to have comfortable lodging while having nature and adventure right outside the door. I wish I had stayed longer at Fireside Lodge, because I did not have enough time to fully enjoy it. Because of that I am also hoping I can do another staycation... maybe for a cozy winter night.

The house was clean and had plenty of amenities including a full kitchen, full-size washer and dryer, and two full bathrooms. It has plenty of closet space to store your belongings and a giant pantry for food storage. I wish it had a dishwasher to make it easier to clean the dishes, but we made it work with 8 of us to pitch in with cooking and cleaning. It would also be nice to have fans in the bathroom to help with ventilation. There is a nice Dyson hair dryer in the bathroom, but I couldn't use it. I plugged it in and it wouldn't turn on. I brought my own dryer and it didn't work either so I think it has to do with the electrical outlets. I tried multiple outlets and neither dryers worked. Aside from these things, the house is absolutely beautiful and perfect. There's a beautiful back patio area with a grill, fire pit, plenty of seating, and a dining table to dine al fresco. The front area is also stunning. The house is a hop, skip, and a jump away from the river. There's a couple picnic tables right by the river that you can sit and enjoy your coffee, read a book, and take in the stunning scenery. We loved our time at the Hope Valley House! We made great memories here as a group. It's about 30 minutes away from the city, but we rented a car so we could get around pretty easily and that worked well for us. We enjoyed the privacy and serenity we had at Hope Valley House. I would definitely recommend staying here!

We checked in after 6pm, so check in instructions were texted to us. Easy to follow. Was easy to find. We stopped at Wally's Pizza for dinner in Cameron Park based off their restaurant suggestions on their website and sent via text check in instructions. Great suggestion! The next mornings breakfast is texted the night before, offering some options like juice preference. And it's delivered around 9am the next morning. Since we had to be at rafting at 9 our first morning at the Inn, they delivered us fruit, scones, and juice early at 8:15am which was really nice. Breakfast was delicious, both mornings. And super fresh. We stayed in the Cypress room. Was as pictured online. Room was clean. The patio area is nice. We explored the grounds a bit our last morning and saw many places to sit around. We enjoyed some time up at the pond in the morning. The staff - I assume owners - were very friendly. We were very happy with our stay here and would return!

We made two contacts over four days about mice in the unit before help arrived. I spent too much of my vacation time cleaning what should have been done before we arrived. No one is maintaining this unit.

The sauna never seems to get hot enough, and I've always wondered why a hot tub has never been added, it would be a great improvement. We also found that basic supplies like toilet paper were very limited. This property has so much potential, and with some updates to the units and amenities, it could easily be a five-star experience. My entire family feels the same way. We love coming here and hope the owners invest in modernizing the accommodations to match the incredible location.

It's absolutely not a resort. They charge you $19 to dump. They charge you $10 a night for a dog. The camp host doesn't even know his own rules. He told my fellow camper he couldn't turn his generator on until 9 AM and the paperwork says 8 AM. It is so dusty. It's like baby powder coming in and out of your rig they don't water anything down so it just floats through the air. The lady at the check-in is so unfriendly she should find another job the ladies in the restaurant and the bar were wonderful. That was the only good thing about this place. Do not stay there with your rig, but definitely have lunch or dinner.

The Marina staff, and the front office staff, and Serene Bean coffee stand were absolutely amazing! (Emphasis on all of the Marina Staff, Lori and team) We felt like we found a secret gem in the mountains. Everything is within walking distance of our on-site motel, and the lake was breathtaking. Since we went after Memorial Day it was very quiet and peaceful. Thank you all so much for hosting, we will be back again soon!
