Always amazed when I try a "new to me" place and it's so darn good. How have I never been here before?! The drive from south shore was absolutely amazing. The fall colors are in full display! Upon arrival, greeted to views that were so serene it was like out of a movie scene! Dined at the restaurant with terrific service, terrific food and terrific views. Truly a hidden gem worth the effort of getting there. While no cocktail offerings, had a small, but decent wine selection that paired nicely with the menu. We had a delicious Caesar salad and halibut with roasted butternut risotto! Yum. Reservations are a must as this place is on the smaller side. Will be back and looking forward to the different seasons as I imagine every season is part of a new movie scene! read more

We had an awesome dinner at Caples Lake Resort. Everything about it greatly exceeded our expectations. The dining room (and the resort) is very rustic but comfortable and has one of the best views of any restaurant I have been to. Our server, Thomas, was very informative, polite and attentive. The heirloom tomato burrata salad had nice, ripe tomatoes and was flavorful. We tried a crabcake appetizer special that was fresh, delicious and came with wonderful Miso flavored vegetables. I hope it becomes a regular item on their menu. Their halibut main course was fresh, light and flavorful. Their wild mushroom ravioli had a delightful truffle flavor to it. The resort is great for relaxing and taking a break. Wonderful staff, we rented cabin #2 and every view is a postcard image, nice deck with seating and a table, BBQ, so you have everything you need. The beds are clean and comfortable, good size bathroom etc. Stocked kitchen items, with coffee maker and microwave and oven, so nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay in Cabin 7, which was private and on the shore. Our K-9 loved swimming in clean/clear water. This was a treat for her, as the Bay Area waters have blue/green algae. The cabin was supplied with everything needed to cook- gas range/microwave/good size frig. The beds were very comfortable. As suggested, we brought our own linen. We enjoyed the wagyu and chicken burgers from their restaurant- delicious! The area is absolutely beautiful. You cannot beat the location of the cabins on Caples Lake Resort. They have a great boat ramp and lots of rentals guaranteed to be tons of fun for the whole family. All of the cabins have barbecues and fire pits. One of the really big perks at staying at Caples Lake is that they have a gourmet restaurant in their lodge building. There is also a bar And food available in the bar area. The food is the best that I have ever tasted. I think they must have a five star chef. The owners are new and they're very wonderful, friendly and just doing a great job to even improve on the resort. We have been coming for many years but this summer was the best trip ever with the advent of that gourmet restaurant! The price of the lodging and the food was very reasonable and we often go to the resort just to have dinner even though we're not staying there. This is a review of the restaurant. From the minute we walked in, it felt good--the friendliness, the decor, the atmosphere. The food and service were delicious, fun, and wonderful. I had mussels in curry sauce (so yummy) and my husband had a delicious soup and kale salad. Thomas was a lovely server and we met other servers too, who stopped by! Went to an early dinner last night, 03/09/24. Remodeled nicely, nice relaxing atmosphere along with a Fantastic view. So if you want to get there at 3:00pm you can eat in the lounge. If you wait until 5:30pm they add a few more things to the menu and you're only one room away. Had the CLR burger and it was great. Cooked just right with a proper amount of condiments on it. Especially liked the blue cheese spread. It came with there version of chips, they were really good but I'm a French fry person. Well worth the trip out there. We finally got to enjoy a little slice of heaven at Caples Lake Resort. They are having smash burger pop ups during the day (which my husband loved) and we stayed for their lounge hours starting at 3:00. I can't believe how much the resort has improved over last year. The new Owners, Mike & Gwen, have donee an extensive remodel of the Lodge and Restaurant. The food is limited to Burgers and Salads, but you get a first class burger that won't leave you hungry. The Chef and Staff are outstanding and friendly. We had a great time! The staff is super friendly and very helpful. We had a lot of interaction with Chris. Super awesome guy. Taylor, Joe & Sydney also help us as well and they were great! Love there vibes. We had Cabin 9 which had a beautiful view of the Lake. If your looking for luxury, you better take your ass somewhere else. It's your typical Rustic Cabin. Due to the COVID we didn't have all the stuff we needed in the cabin but.... if you ask staff they will get it for you. Just the view made the cabin great. They also have a old school sauna. We rented a motor boat to go fishing. They have paddle boards, kayak and "row boats" to rent. WiFi is only in lodge area and no tv's but your there on a lake not to watch TV. Review is for the marina and boat rental service. What a great time we had taking our two boys out on the lake! Prices are exceptionally reasonable and the staff was very kind and accommodating. Our boys fell in love with Sydney in particular. We really enjoyed the lake and found a spot to "pull over" and enjoy a secluded beach. Our kids also loved the ice cream in the store. Awww! Having lived in the area since 1981 Caples Lake Resort & Restaurant used to be our favorite place to dine. We're absolutely thrilled the restaurant is open again, and the food & staff did not disappoint. Everything was delicious and the staff was amazing. Since it was Valentines Day we planned to stay the night & ski before heading home, so we were able to sit by the cozy fireplace and catch up with old friends. We stayed upstairs in Room 6 - best view!!! Mike & Gwen's updating of the lodge is ongoing with new linens and a very comfortable bed. Even though the room temperature was a bit chilly we were snug and almost too warm with the ample blankets they provide. They're working to upgrade the heating system, but it was perfect for sleeping. The continental breakfast was probably the best we've ever had! Plenty of fresh selections for anyone. Soooo, whether it's stopping off for a hot toddy after skiing, enjoying a great dinner, or a quick overnight getaway, we're definitely going to be regulars once again! read more

This review is way overdue (I didn't use yelp until recently), but my husband and I took our three kids to this resort a few years ago. We stayed in a cabin, which was small but cozy and easily accommodated the 5 of us. It was very peaceful, and the scenery was beautiful. I remember it was July, but it was cold and you could still see snow on the mountains, which we all loved. We rented a little boat from them and went out trout fishing. We caught quite a few, and that was dinner :) There are hiking trails nearby, and a little restaurant where we got hot chocolate when it started storming on us. Some of the best memories with out kiddos! I would love to return soon. read more

This is a gem of a place not too far from SLT. This was my dads favorite lake where he caught his first mackinaw while trolling. If you ever get the chance to visit their marina, my dad's mackinaw is mounted above their cashier.....its final resting place after he left. Love you Dad! read more

Caples Lake Resort is in Kirkwood,California and is a few miles down the road from Kit Carson Lodge, but it is in Alpine County rather than Amador County. The lake is a beautiful place and there is still a patch of snow on the mountains. The emp,oyees are very friendly and helpful. The guy at the store said don't bother trying to fish as the fish are apparently practicing social distancing. He explained the water was too warm expect any bites;cold water is where the action is. The resort is at the El Dorado National Forest,so naturally you see lots of old evergreen trees,and newer ones as well. There are lots of areas on the shore to explore with many beautiful rocks. It was hazy due to wildfire smome, so you couldn't see distant mountains very well. It is a peaceful setting. The buildings are rustic and the general store is small and basic,with bait,fishing lures,shirts,hats,ice cream,food and drinks available. The public restroom is a blue outhouse with hand sanitizer provided. read more

Just returned from a short fishing trip to the Sierras. Decided not to tent camp yet and found The Caples Lake Resort to stay at. Stayed in the Lodge which had an awesome view of the lake and surrounding mountains. The bed was brand new and better than my bed at home. The accommodations were better than I expected with a rustic but very clean feel. In the morning they provided to Lodge guests a very nice continental breakfast. There are also cabins you can rent for more privacy if you wish. The Lodge showcased a beer and wine bar after 3pm and a nice dinner house after 5pm serving very fine meals. It is a true testament that many of the patrons were actually locals. We also rented a boat for a day which was fun with no issues. We definitely will do this again. Mike and Gwen have done a great job of bettering this place and I can see it only getting better and better. It was an awesome weekend! Thank you both! read more

This review is a bit overdue as we stayed here in early June. June is considered pre season or off season because it is still quite cold and the schools have yet to let out . Also when they complete their upgrades I am sure it would be considered at least a 4 star Yelp review for the shear beauty! The setting is beautiful, it is the only resort on Caples Lake. There are no other homes or businesses on the lake either. We reserved a room at the Inn but when we got there they have us a cabin for only $10 more. They were still doing renovations at the main building and they said we would be more comfortable ( less noise ) in a cabin. We were the only ones at the resort the first night , one other couple checked in to another cabin the second night. The cabin was right on the lake , what a fantastic view. It's not a high class property so get ready for " rustic ". You walk into the cabin's front door into the bedroom and the bathroom is a separate room to the right. There is also a small table with chairs to eat at. The kitchen is fully equipped, sink, refrigerator , oven and dishes. Everything you need. They are in the process of updating the rooms at the B & B Inn and one of the guys working there said they're in the process of doing other updates to the resort. It may not be five stars but it is rustic and comfortable and clean. Definitely my kind of place. There is a small bait and tackle shop if you want to go fishing. You can also rent kayaks. But it was too cold and windy so they didn't allow boats on the water. I'd definitely go back! read more

Beautiful location Cabin pleasant major mix up on Reservation 2 older people him 71 on a walker, me 68 walk badly and trouble with stairs . Reserved Cabin # 3 no stairs strait in and deck as well been wanting to stay there . Checked in they said Cabin #4 5 steps up and no hand rail not sure if that is OSHA compliant even.. Went back to office said no Is #4told them diffulcty no hand rail even to hold on to he came over added a rough wood rail better then nothing said he could try to ask people but they had settled in earlier he admitted I was correct was suppose to be Cabin 3 these were young people with a kidlet and they had stayed in the Cabin before and had felt members next door but would have only been I Cabin away. I grew up in Placerville and visited Cables Lake as a child up until my adult life now. I used to haul my aluminum fishing boat up from my cabin in Grizzly Flats to nearby Silver Lake and see Cables Lake. This is a gorgeous lake near Lake Tahoe on HWY 88. I recommend camping at Silver Lake. I have never fished Cables but heard its good to fish. As well in the winter I have see ice fishing going on out on the lake. In the fall there are beautiful yellow 'Quaking Aspen' trees nearby as you drive towards Lake Tahoe and this lake. read more
