My fiancé and I came out of our 4 days hike from Meeks to Echo Lake and stopped at the chalet for snacks, and beer. We were treated so well by Kat and her staff!!! What a treat. Thank you for the hospitality!

They've got the snacks and beers for your day hikes, and enough ramen to get you to Tahoe City on your rim trail hike. Prices are reasonable for the convenience, and they can't be blamed for how the forest service maintains the nearby pit toilets.

One of my favorite places in the Sierra Nevada is the Echo Chalet Lodge, on Echo Lake. The Echo Chalet is the perfect high alpine resort. Rent a kayak or motorboat. Take the water taxi across lower Echo Lake, then thru the small channel to the upper lake. Here the taxi will drop you off at the trailhead to Desolation Wilderness, for a great day hike or backpacking trip. Echo Chalet has a deli and a ice cream counter, Plus foods, camping supplies, fishing tackle and dry goods. Even cabin rentals! You won't regret a day spent at Echo Chalet!

I love that they charge a lot less than they could, given their location (a can of soda for 75 cents!).

We stayed at Sierra Inn for 3 nights and had absolutely a blast. The place is located right on the…read moreriver which is great for fishing. Rooms are nice, clean and very functional. Service was perfect and they even made us breakfast and dinner. There is a great outdoor fire pit next to the river with plenty of wood and we made use of it at nights enjoying the calm and fresh air of the sierras. I just can't recommend this place enough.

The pros: Recently remodeled all over. The remodeling job looks like it was a complete…read morestem-to-stern project, not just slapping on fresh paint and calling it good. The floors, fixtures, beds, railings, and EVERYTHING outside is either new or well maintained. There's nothing old and tired here, with only a couple of exceptions. The property has a fair amount of frontage on the American River, which looks like it'd be a nice place to fish, although I did not try it. Adirondack chairs, fire pits, strings of lights overhead, and a tiny creek burbling into the American River all create a sense of peace and relaxation. Down by the river, you can hardly hear traffic noise from Highway 50, just a hundred yards away. So why only three stars? And what were the exceptions? The biggest problem is one of overall comfort. Our room was inexplicably stuffy. We tried opening the windows to get some cross-ventilation, but not much was happening there. Plus, with the blinds, which do a GREAT job of blocking out light, also unfortunately blocked any potential airflow through the unit, so if we wanted any flow, we had to keep the window AND blinds open, and anybody walking past could see clearly into the room. There was a portable air conditioner in the room, which helped bring the temperature down, but it came at a cost: it was noisy. So noisy it made it hard to sleep. So we either were kept awake because we were uncomfortably warm, or we were kept awake by the portable A/C unit. And if we opened the window in hopes of some airflow, we got a lot of highway noise, because the second floor of the motel was right at highway level. There's one smaller issue related to the remodel: not enough electrical outlets. For a place that was probably built in the 1950s, the number of outlets was probably typical. Now, however, we travel with stuff that needs charging overnight. The desk clerk had an unusual attitude, too. When we checked in, it felt like an interrogation. Rather than ask questions, he blurted them out as if they were accusations. "NAME?" "PETS?" There was no greeting, and there were no pleasantries. Not necessarily rude or hostile, but certainly not welcoming, either. Lastly, and this is neither a plus or a minus, but rather a point of nostalgia. It's probably been at least 25 years since we've seen a room key with a plastic tag on it. Most lodging places have gone to cardkey locks of one sort or another, so it was actually kind of a cool throwback to have a real key with an iconic diamond-shaped tag. Would we stay at the Sierra Inn on the River again? Possibly. But if the weather was warm, we now know to run the A/C immediately to bring the temperature down before we settle into a nighttime routine.

The townhomes are beautiful and have 3 levels. I see they've made some improvements- probably based on families. The stairs are steep, so with two kids running around, it can be nerve wrecking. I saw they added nice child gates to the top of their sets of stairs. In the townhomes, you have 3 levels and 2 patios: one patio on the second floor (living area with a half bath) with an egg chair and table setting. The third level is the bed space and that patio has the soaking tub and a little seating area. Their main bathroom is huge- beautiful modern shower with a huge soaking tub for two. The soaking tub takes some agility getting in and out, but is nice and deep and has jets. It takes a while to fill up, but once it does, it's really relaxing. We love how both walls next to the sliding glass doors on both levels have a see thru fireplace. Such a cute, romantic detail that's nice to have running while you're relaxing. The heated floors in the bathroom are an added perk. Oh! And you get your own garage- even though you still have to access the home from outside the garage. They are incredible accommodating. They have a list of things offered on request like kids toys, hygiene kits, ironing board, etc. They get added points for having those really expensive amazing Dyson hair dryers as their hair drying option too It's one of our favorite places to stay!

Since we had to be at rafting at 9 our first morning at the Inn, they delivered us fruit, scones, and juice early at 8:15am which was really nice. Breakfast was delicious, both mornings. And super fresh. We stayed in the Cypress room. Was as pictured online. Room was clean. The patio area is nice. We explored the grounds a bit our last morning and saw many places to sit around. They will charge $50 more per person. We had a little one with us and we were charged $50 more per night. (And yes, they will meet you at check-in to make sure you don't bring extra people!) Our cottage had a queen bed and a sofa bed. Presumably with the extra charge, we would have been given enough towels and linen for 3. Nope. There were towels for 2. And the sofa bed was a bare mattress with a throw without a sheet. We didn't complain since we brought our own linen. Despite being charged a cleaning fee of $50, know that you will still need to haul all of your trash to a trash bin 50 - 100 feet of your cottage. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the place is tired and old: filthy floors, dusty baseboards, tight shower knobs, weak AC, broken porch light... After paying $2000 for 2 cottages for 3 nights, we were charged - after Danika / Sherry gave us a discount - an additional $25 for not having left the premises on time!
