Yikes! Brittany, a manager of some sort has failed to respond to my email regarding an incorrectly soldered pipe. I refuse to call Carrie Anne as there only so much condescending and smug I can tolerate with issues like this. Mike, the service supervisor told me noises and videos were okay that every HVAC technician I've shown to, including his own team, all said there is no way that was acceptable. Unless they hired new technicians I would be very aware of them. Julian wired my zone valves backwards, doesn't solder properly and confidently tells you issues are fixed when they are not. Dante tells you leaks aren't a thing and shortly after they become one, installs circulators wrong and also gives up when "his head hurts" from trying to fix a problem he can't solve, to then leave with the issue still present. Justin calls every technician and breakdowns on your stairwell. Ahmed tells you a leaking gasket is not the issue and changes something else only to have the gasket be an issue and have to come back two hours later. I would strongly suggest using anyone other than Carpenter and Smith. read more

We have been using Carpenter & Smith for more than 20 years and I gave never had any problems with them. We receive reminders when it is time to have our system checked, we are in automatic delivery which works great. Every year we lock in the price for said delivery and it is an easy process. If prices go up during the winter, we get charged up to the locked price. We have never had a problem with them. read more

I would like to thank Jim Faughnan for his professionalism and expertise in diagnosing what was needed to get our furnace back on. I'd also like to thank Sonia, who answered the phone after midnight, when we discovered the furnace was not working (of course the one night it's 3°!) She was so lovely and reassuring, and let us know that we were to expect someone between eight and noon. She made sure that we had opened the faucet to run the tap so the water pipes wouldn't freeze. We have electric heaters just in case something like this should happen, and it got us through till morning. Jim showed up at 8:10 AM and got the heat going; thank you, sir! My great-grandfather built the house, and we have been with Carpenter and Smith since 1950 when they installed the original heating system. The service contract that Carpenter and Smith offers has been worth every penny over the years. Carpenter and Smith has always given us peace of mind. All their techs have been wonderful when we've needed them, but today a special shout out to Jim! Our basement was serious cold, and I appreciate him working in those conditions to get us going again with our heat. read more

This company is a complete rip off. When we purchased our home over 5 years ago we opted to stay with them to make it easy. Our oil bills were never over $350. Of course when the oil prices skyrocketed our bill was extremely high even with a "lock in" contract. They charge you a ridiculous overhead price while trying to make it seem like you are getting a "bargain" because they are a full service company vs COD. I had specifically requested to NOT send oil until I contacted them because we had received oil from another company and were considering canceling. I was also told because we had a balance they would not be able to deliver oil until it was paid. Now it became once we saw your balance was low we released the delivery. Low to them is 600 but having a balance of 800 isn't. I am LIVID. We received a delivery today at $5.60/gallon which is INSANE. They don't advertise their prices and always have you pay a ridiculous amount of money to "lock in" in the event prices go down, but their version of prices going down is not helping anyone!! Another company has their pricing available and was at $3.69 today so how the F*** is theirs $5.50? Due to their carelessness and greed, our balance is back up to us now owing over $1000. Never mind that I sent a message on their site, told them on the phone and emailed, but now they are using the excuse that they had emailed and we didn't respond. When we had a balance of over $1000 they were calling myself and my husband almost daily, but conveniently today they decide to release the delivery to screw us over. We recently had our old propane tank removed and replaced with a new one. Our technician Paul was very conscientious. He contacted his team who was nearby in a truck with a crane. The crane made it possible to go up and over our boxwoods preventing any damage. Paul even applied a coat of paint so the unpainted pipes from the house would match the color of the tank. I am new to the area and Carpenter & Smith had apparently been servicing the home I just purchased for years, but my experience has frankly left me questioning why. I sure wouldn't recommend them to you, unless something big changes soon. Within the first week in my new home, the furnace began smoking heavily at 6am, and a STRONG oil smell permeated the air. Panicked, I turned off the power to the furnace, called Carpenter & Smith and asked them to hurry down. When the technician arrived and inspected the heating system, he looked extremely grave and told us that we had narrowly avoided a house fire. He worked on the furnace for over an hour before he told us that he'd "never seen this situation before" and that Carpenter & Smith had clearly incorrectly installed the boiler a year earlier, leading to a very dangerous malfunction. He spent another several hours fixing the problem, explaining what he was doing, showing us the baffle plate he pulled out (burnt black and welded in so tight he couldn't remove the other one!) that shouldn't have been installed and what had gone wrong, and assuring us that we would be safe going forward. However, when I received the very large bill for the service charge, I reached out to Carpenter & Smith about what he'd told us, and asked that they waive the service fee given the incorrect installation. I also asked that they send someone out to do a check on the repairs their technician had done in June, to ensure everything was operating correctly. Their technician also said that our chimney would need early cleaning due to the malfunction, and I asked if they could take care of that. Suddenly, they changed their story. Mike with Carpenter & Smith insisted their technician was incorrect in what he'd told us about the problem and that the heating system had in fact been installed correctly and that the baffle plate he pulled out should have been left in. They insisted that the previous owners had not had the system checked since installation; but when I asked for the service records at the property, they said they couldn't disclose anything since we were "new customers". Interesting, given they installed a new oil tank at the property in late 2021... When I followed up multiple times over several months, I was passed between a few different contacts, getting notes about them having left me voicemails (none were received, even when I suggested they had called the wrong number) and sent a 100+ page document of the specifications for my boiler as proof nothing had been incorrectly installed (by a person who had not seen the boiler himself!) I asked what the problem could've been if it wasn't incorrectly installed, and he said "there is no real clear indication of what the cause of malfunction was". I asked if he could understand that given their technician had been CONFIDENT the baffle plates should not have been left in the boiler (and had removed one!), I was now nervous about the state of my heating system. No answer for that either. Either the technician knew what he was doing when he was here, or he didn't! Regardless, I was provided with no additional clarity and made to feel very much like my requests for further information were nothing but a nuisance. I even backed down and said I could pay for the chimney cleaning myself. All the while, Carpenter & Smith was doing my oil deliveries all winter... as I tried to get this resolved. The whole time, all I heard back was the same sort of message: what our technician told you was wrong, and you owe us money. Finally, months into discussion, barely getting replies at all and sending weekly email followups, I got tired. I sent a direct, calm email reminding them that all I was asking was that the service fee be waived for the visit that THEIR OWN TECHNICIAN said was the fault of the company, that they hadn't been able to explain what to do about the plate being removed (if indeed it should not have been removed), and if they couldn't do anything to work with me on the situation, then to tell me how I could cancel my account and switch to a company that would communicate with me. A month later, I still haven't gotten a reply. Guess now I know why none of my neighbors use Carpenter & Smith. read more

Made the mistake of being on auto-delivery. They charged $1.50 more than current market of oil. They justified it buy saying they offer 30 day payment terms (a high interest credit card would be significantly cheaper. That they guarantee I won't run out of oil (even if I did, it would be less than the $350 extra I paid). And third because I could be on a service plan - that I would have to pay extra. These reason do not justify it - they take advantage of loyal customers, hoping you are to dumb to understand or notice. read more

The staff at C&S are great. The Staff!!! The company itself? Hmmm. I understand is very costly the cost of oil and propane but they turn off my furnace off for the summer, when winter came I didn't know what key was turned off, they came to turn it on and bill me for $150. Not fair!!! Maybe the only complaint I have. But if is one thing I like, is the staff, they are all super friendly and fix issues if any right away. Carrie Ann ( ?) is always attentive and genuinely nice. She goes above and beyond to accommodate with payments and deliveries. The other ladies there are nice as well. Deceptive & Dishonest biz practices. Moved to Carpenter & Smith after 18 yrs w another Co. After 1 yr, because rates dramatically increased over competitors, I left only to wind up w another co that was owned & operated by C & S. Only found out when I recd 1st bill. Issues: - Always seemed to send out a delivery right after oil prices decline to bill at the old rate before the price drop. - When oil prices dramatically dropped in Feb/Mar, they made a delivery at an absurd rate. When I called them on it, they changed it & said it was a mistake. - Today's delivery billed at 2.99/gal. Called my old co & rate was 43% lower at 2.09 w a lock in rate even lower at 1.99. The price difference on that delivery alone was $199 ( based on 2.09) Last year , I purchased a service agreement last year which included a cleaning. Took approx 10 mos to get cleaing scheduled. Young man came out for 2 hrs w heat off in winter, then couldnt get boiler back on after cleaning. Waited another hour for another tech to come & get back up & running. Then charged $127 for a part when boiler was running perfectly fine prior to cleaning. They then had to come back as when they did the cleaning the boiler temp was lowered to a level that the hosue wld not heat to 70 degrees. If you want to pay $199 a delivery more for the pleasure of doing biz w Carpenter & Smith. Certainly a choice. read more

Called for service on boiler today and Dorothy service mgr. said sorry can't help you. Very confused, Carpenter & Smith came out Friday to fix an issue with the boiler. Later that evening we had no hot water, I checked the boiler and it was off. Called the Service number and after a couple of calls the answering service told me they had no emergency service in the Summer and that I would receive a call at 8:00 am in the morning. It is now almost 12:30 and despite several calls Carpenter and Smith;s answering service is unable to tell me when or if a tech. Is coming. The boiler was at least working before they came yesterday now it is dead. Why do they advertise 7x24 emergency service if they can''t honor it. read more

Think I have been blocked from carpenter & smith from sending another review, in my opinion, a rotten company now in my opinion, done business there for 50 years, they can't do common math , a 110 service call plus a 50$ part doesn't add up to 400 plus dollars , and they charged me $3.89 a gallon last time that came when oil is about $2.60 on a signed contract all over the county. I am a renter in greenwood lake ny since Nov 2015 and have paid rent consistently within grace period of lease. When i moved in my landlord john finn told me to contact sos fuel to establush an acct. Because i rented a three story house with original 1950s windows.. i put up plastic and paid 1000 to heat this house first year with 3 tank fillups.. after getting out of the hospital..When my furnace stopped working 2 nights ago. .. my landlord told me to call wallace. They ran a credit check .. no prob.. established a credit acct .. send me a confirm email for variable acct.. this contracted sister company was to be my supplier. They came promptly to provide 15 GALS of #2 fuel oil & Restarted furnace for onky $59 ..five stars there... but... to get my full delivery they did not honor wallaces credit check. They listened to my landlords trash talk... he owns 3 other properties in gwl... and made me a cod customer. My experience has been that credit customers are prioritized over cod customers. Originally i was to receive full delivery today as credit customer per wallace. That was cancelled when landlord called. Good news.. they were here 9am ... i am warm!! Recommend!! read more

I signed for an oil discount last yr and it went out with the person who sold it to me (signed agreements and all). The office Manager, Britney who unfortunately has no customer service aptitude. Said, they couldn't get into that persons file (Hogwash). She also fails to realize that consumers who call did their homework before calling & understand how companies buy oil (cheap & tons of gallons in advance) however, she claimed they might not have enough to give me a discount (lol) and the discounts start in September/Oct. I purchased oil heat all my adult life at homes I've owned (3 so far) so If they want to give you a discount, they do. Period. But this company did nothing to keep and were insulting. So stay far away!! CS went out with their previous staff and the current are "too smart" (giggling) for their own good. There are too many oil vendor to be bothered by this one. It seems price gauging loyal clients is their thing now. Update: Paula & Dorothy also fail CS. Cathy, Brittany's boss and decides pricing does not want to speak to anyone so her information is withheld by staff. Final Conclusion- you are forced to deal with entry level staff with NO CS aptitude. Now run faster!!! Update: Kathy from C&S, who identified herself as manager apologized for the bad CS experience. I had a horrible experience with this company. I called them last week, spoke to the service manager to make a complaint and still waiting to hear back. I want my service plan refunded in full. They mismanaged my furnace and sent unscrupulous subcontractors to sweep my chimney. Do not let A1 chimney company anywhere near your chimney! This is probably the worst company from start to finish !! I would give them 0 stars if possible. Starting with Dorothy and Britney in customer service!! They were rude, nasty and really were not people I would want to work for my company! The tech came to my home to service my heating systems..1 month ago .. they serviced and replaced a nozzle had the system running.. during the cold weather spell the heat went out. They sent the same tech out to find my unit not working and my pipes frozen.. the tech replaced yet again the nozzle( guess they don't warranty their work or parts ) and started the system. When the pipes unthawed I had a flooding disaster.. and they sent me a bill again!!!I have been a Customer for 24 years and since this company was purchased it has been a nightmare! I have been trying to speak to a general manager and they fail to return phones calls! And told me to turn the issue over to my home owners insurance! My insurance company stated they have business insurance to cover issues such as this ! It has been well over 2 weeks and no return call!! Stay far away from this company !! read more
