I find it hard to think of something better than piping hot fresh made donuts. Carpe Donut hits the spot. It's a food truck, but they also have a physical location on 1715 Allied Lane. They only make one kind of donut, with apple cider. The ingredients are organic and they are truly delicious. We went on a thursday afternoon and the young lady that helped us made them right in front of us. They were fluffy, not too sweet, slightly dusted with cinnamon and sugar, and you could taste a hint of the apple cider. They also make coffee drinks, hot cider, and they have an awesome hot chocolate. It's worth the little detour.

    Tasty tasty donut goodness!

Why did we drive TWO hours to Charlottesville, VA? For a deliciously hot apple cider donut made by Carpe Donut. That's why!! My love affair with Carpe Donut's donuts started a year ago. Join me as we go down fatboy memory lane. Watch your step, there's icing and sugar all around this place... It was a year ago when we first had the pleasure of devouring Carpe Donut's tasty apple cide donuts at our friends' wedding. In lieu of a wedding cake, they had hired the folks at Carpe Donut to make fresh apple cider donuts for all their guests...as many as they could eat. Can you say apple cider donut BUFFET!! **wipes away drool** Anyway, the donuts were SO amazing that I stuffed my fat face with an embarrassingly large number of fresh donuts. I was the first one in line, and at the end of the wedding I was the last one in line. That night the donut maker even packed half a dozen donuts in a to-go bag for this pastry loving fatboy. I loved these donuts so much could not wait until trying their tasty treats again... Flash back to the present, due to work and other travel commitments were weren't able to pay a visit to the Carpe Donut store for a year. In that time I had to satisfy my love of baked goods with other pastry treats (cupcakes, cakes, pies...you name it, I ate it). We finally had a chance to head down to Charlottesville and drove straight to the Carpe Donut "factory". The Carpe Donut location is somewhat hidden in the middle area of a shopping/industrial park. You'll see the Great Harvest Bread from the road, and if you drive too quickly through their parking lot (after passing Great Harvest), you might miss Carpe Donut. Heading inside there's a small three seat table near the counter where a member of the Carpe Donut staff will happily take your order. The lady at the counter happily took our donut order. Soon we had a nice bag full of hot and tasty apple cider donuts. I couldn't help myself and all manners were thrown out the window as I plunged my chubby hand into the donut bag. I immediately shoved this warm donut into my mouth and closed my eyes. Yep, the same and just as tasty as I remembered them to be. As I shoved the remnants of that first donut into my mouth, I then offered the wife and kids a donut. Afterall, everyone knows that when you drive for hours just to eat a delicious apple cider donut, you need to let the guy with a nickname of "Cupcakes" eat first. :-) BTW, make sure you eat these fresh! If you do take some home, do NOT warm them up in the microwave. Be patient and warm them up slowly in a toaster over. Trust me, these donuts still tasty the next day.... **drools again**

Carpe Donut is a donut cart that sits in the parking lot behind Wachovia on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall on Fridays. I've also seen the cart next to the Pavilion during Friday's After Five (local concert series). If you are wandering near the Downtown Mall on a Friday, stop by!! There is only one kind of donut: apple cider cake donut, but it's worth it because of its great taste and eco-friendlyness. The donuts are made of organic flour, eggs, and local apple cider and are fried in soybean oil. YUM! I think they also recycle the oil after it's done... it's so awesomely granola. The apple cider gives these cake donuts a fantastic flavor that is not too overwhelming. The guy even rolled it around in cinnamon/sugar right in front of me after pulling it from the fryer. Ahhh! The best!

Oh how we miss your sweet embrace. Your warm fresh sweets with sometimes gooey insides. We waited all summer only to have less than a week left before you unleash your web upon us. Looking forward to it and another fall & winter of your tasty concoctions. Grubs ~

    So small, not worth $1.50.

It's not an actual donut store, its a catering business. So disappointing we were expecting a real donut store.

Rehearsal Dinner The first signs of trouble appeared here. Despite our wedding planner reaching out hours before the event, Jason (the owner) never responded. He was responsible for providing tables and chairs for 40 guests but brought enough for less than a third. While the food was acceptable, it did not match the quality we experienced during our tasting. Wedding Day Our wedding had about 135 guests; per the contract, the catering team was supposed to arrive 3 hours early to assist with setup, food prep, and drinks. Instead, most staff and food arrived late and during the ceremony. Jason was not on-site and could not be reached until well after the event began. The bartenders arrived on time but with no direction and without mixers (also part of the contract), forcing our planner to purchase them out of pocket. Luckily we provided the alcohol so we at least had beer and wine. Because of their late arrival and lack of organization, we had to delay happy hour, dinner, and the reception. When food was finally served, many agreed-upon dishes were missing, including gluten-free options for guests with dietary restrictions. Portions were inconsistent, and they ultimately ran out of food, leaving 20+ guests--including our band and planner--without dinner. Jason did not arrive until after 8 PM (seven hours late) and offered no apology or solution to running out of food. After the Event The team was contracted to handle cleanup, breakdown and trash removal, but this was minimally worked on. Our planner stayed until midnight to clean what she could, after Jason and his staff had left. The next day, my wife, several guests and I spent the whole morning finishing what Jason hadn't done. Afterwards, while my wife and I are trying to enjoy our honeymoon and recover from the disaster he created with our wedding, he harassed my wife about getting all of the items he had left at the venue (we had to take them and store them in our trailer so we didn't get charged by the venue). He didn't have the decency to communicate during the wedding or make efforts to correct his mistakes, but he sure could call and text us non-stop when it was impacting his pocket book. You might wonder if there were warning signs. Honestly, there weren't--until the rehearsal dinner. Leading up to the wedding, Jason was responsive and helpful. He provided a wonderful tasting, he even met us a couple months in advance to walk venue and discuss our needs and coordinate with our wedding planner. He even worked with us to design a menu that accommodated multiple dietary restrictions. He seemed professional and committed. However, on the day of, he was overcommitted and underperformed. The food quality was nowhere near what we had at the tasting. It seemed either Jason didn't prepare the food himself (the head chef onsite was not Jason) or he cannot scale his recipes. Most dishes were bland, poorly cooked, or inedible. Jason may be a fine chef, but he is not a caterer. Something though that really defines who Jason and LFA Catering is, not once, to this day have we received an apology for everything that happened. In fact, during any conversation, with us or anyone else involved, he has only made excuses and tried to defend his actions saying he did the best he could. I'm sorry, but if that's the attitude you plan to have, I could not in good conscious recommend him to anyone for any catering needs. After reading another review where he no called and no showed, I feel lucky we at least received some food and services. I truly feel for those people. I hope whoever has spent the time to read this and their review, learn from our mistakes and stay as far away as possible from this company.

The presentation of the food is always beautiful and classy. I had some of the most memorable foods at the two events I attended that were catered by them. For a foodie like me, that's saying a lot! I first had their food at an Anthro graduate student event at UVA and it was so delicious and classy that I absolutely had to inquire about who did the catering. They had these amazing candied ginger brownies, a wonderful variety of gourmet breads and dips, and some other great desserts that slip my mind now. Everything was to die for. The food was the type of thing that truly shows how much you care about your guests. I used this catering company to cater a Caribbean conference I organized at UVA in 2009 and everything was divine. The roasted red pepper almond dip was to die for...seriously!! The breads were so amazingly tasty. The desserts were perfect (ginger brownies, cinnamon phyllo, citrus cream puffs). Everyone ranted and raved about everything from the presentation to the absolutely wonderful flavor, and they were all asking who did the catering. A Pimento gives attention to every single detail, and I would happily trust them to do any of my events. If I can have them come down to Richmond and do my wedding, I will do it in a heartbeat! Having A Pimento cater my conference was worth every single penny and so much more more. Many, many thanks to Gay and her team for an exceptionally well-done job. Your hard work was very much appreciated. The owner is friendly, very helpful, patient, and professional. Note: Super hard-to-find location. Drive slowly once you're on market street. It's in a very very small unit of a business building. There's a glass door and it's on the side that faces the road.

Well... now that we got that out of the way... this location was horrible. I showed up on Memorial Day after finishing a 6 hour hike at Old Rag. Believe me, I was hungry. The staff looked totally disinterested, maybe business was slow that day. I was the only customer in the building after all. I ordered a big Mediterranean with chicken on wheat. So the girl spread the hummus on the bread, added the chicken, and rolled it through the oven. She ran outside to greet someone she knew, I saw her hand out a cookie to a kid, which was nice. Sadly, my sandwich was sacrificed. The guy had no idea what he was doing. He asked if I wanted all the toppings, I told him no mayo, no mustard, everything else. Now I couldn't see it, but when he handed the bag to me within a minute, I thought that came back pretty fast. I paid my 13 bucks for the sandwich and drink and took a seat outside. As I unwrapped my lunch, my sense of concern was realized. He not only left off the hot peppers, he left off all the other Mediterranean sandwich toppings. No feta (which is supposed to go in the oven), no cucumber, no roasted peppers, no artichoke hearts. I decided not to ask for it to be remade, I didn't want an issue. So I asked for the Mediterranean toppings, a lady put cukes, peppers, and artichokes in a plastic cup. Still no feta or hot peppers. I decided to take what I could get. Oh and if you want more proof they don't pay attention to detail, the tomatoes on my sandwich were from the ends of the fruit. That's right, I had tomato stem in my sandwich. This staff needs training today. Not next weekend, they need it now. I'll go back to Potbelly again. But not this location. If they don't care, they're not getting any more of my money.
