Carondelet Park Rec Complex is such a great community spot! The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the place stays clean and well-maintained. I really like how they've got something for everyone -- from the gym and pool to the walking track and fitness classes. It's got that neighborhood feel but still feels modern and professional. Whether you're coming to work out, swim, or just relax a bit, it's a great place to spend some time and stay active. Definitely one of the best local rec centers in St. Louis! read more

Crowded, unclean, out of order. Sunday noon-4 pm. Loud and rude guests. Very disappointed that even after cleaning hot tub it still is far from clean. The sauna was also run down and not in good shape. Front desk staff are friendly. Clearly, there is no management or quality assurance staff. The whole pool area needs cleaning. There aren't enough chairs for guests on the weekend. During the week there often aren't enough staff to keep even basics done. They got rid of towels using Covid as an excuse. This was years ago, repairs go slowly on all equipment and basics aren't maintained. Probably the worst value for money. read more

Nicest YMCA Facility that I've visited. The entrance floor has a Daycare, one for Infants & one for Toddlers, and also has a 'Teen Hub' equipped with gamer chairs, computers, and pool tables. (although no one's ever in there) Past the entrance gate, you have the option to walk downstairs to the workout area / locker rooms / basketball court. OR, you can walk/run on the indoor track that revolves around the entire facility. For even numbered days, traffic moves clockwise on the track. Odd numbered days, you travel counter-clockwise. So, let's say it's April 1st, the flow of traffic would be counter-clockwise on the track. Pretty neat. Indoor Pool has 3 lap lanes, Lazy River, Hot Tub, kids play arena, as well as a spiral mega-slide. There is a reasonably large outdoor pool that opens in the summer. Only thing that bugs me is: Members have to pay an additional one-time fee for summer time access to the pool. But, you also must be a member to access the pool, regardless. Kind of a double-standard. ***Nice place and design. Forgot to mention the Outdoor playground. Amazing neighborhood YMCA and very affordable, especially for families. I always noticed this Y driving on 55, but couldn't justify going to this gym until I moved to the area. And that's the thing, it's not a destination (maybe it is during summer for the outdoor pool - TBD). For people in the neighborhood, the location is fantastic, it's spacious and clean, and it has whatever you need: plenty of machines, weights, and an indoor track and pool. They're not the newest machines in town, but I'm also playing less than $30/mo for each of the two people in my household ($54 total). I've never gone and had trouble using the machines or areas I needed, but it does look like swimming lanes fill up quickly and are hard to reserve. read more

For a facility that costs a family over $800 a year you'd think their attitude would be a hell of a lot better. 3 people at a desk- 2 with their hands in their pockets offering zero assistance with checking in. Go to California anytime, except around election time. Trust me - never go to CA-around-elect ion time. Don't say I didn't warn you. But I digress. This is actually a YMCA, and reportedly one of the best ones in the STL area... which is sad. I hate to give them such a low rating, but I'll list the positives first: (1) Lovely surroundings, in a nice park in a nice part of STL (2) The most wonderful girls at the front desk, one of them was training, both liked me a lot (3) They give out free towels to use And the negatives: (1) This is one of the most problematic YMCA facilities I've used, in terms of how many machines are out of order and how many things are rusted or don't work well (2) There aren't enough benches for lifting weights and the guys get pretty territorial about the few benches that are here... which are uncomfortable, bad ones (3) The showers aren't great (4) It's a fair way from the parking spots to the building - and plenty of steps (5) There aren't enough of some of the key lifting machines to go around, and there are no big comfy mats either (6) When equipment is out of order, it stays out of order for a long time (7) They insisted on calling my home YMCA in Buffalo to make sure I was allowed to use the facility. While this is the correct way to do it, the majority of YMCAs just let me in without checking, which I appreciate. It's somewhere between a 2 and a 3, but could get raised up if they give the place a bit of a makeover. read more

Love this location of the YMCA. For the past couple of years, I have been going to their Body Pump classes. Dana, Megan, Jelly, and Alison are amazing instructors and I try to frequent their classes as much as possible. Pro tip: If you aren't 10-15 minutes early, the classes often fill up and they run out of equipment. Also, always tell the instructor if you are new to this class so they will be sure to explain all of the exercises. It will help you avoid injury. It's overall my favorite class at the Y. I also occasionally go to beginner yoga on Monday and Wednesday and that lady is awesome, as well. I also am totally obsessed with the running track here, especially in the winter. First of all, because of all the glass windows on all sides of the building it's so well lit and bright with natural lighting. If you're going to be running inside, this is the closest thing to being outdoors. With the heat of Saint Louis summers, you gotta' have your AC, especially when exercising. Their facilities and equipment are so new, clean, and well-maintained. Staff is friendly and welcoming every time I come. It's the little things, y'all. read more

I have been attending this Y location for a few months now. When I had to switch from another location I was nervous about "starting over" at a new place, but this location has been great! I arrived in the evening a few months ago and asked for them to give me a quick tour of the facility. I also needed to rent a gym locker and find out how some of the machines worked. It was nice to get a personalized tour of the gym and hear about the amenities offered. The pool(s) are amazing! I selected a locker and filled out a form with the front desk. I like having a locker since I can store bathroom stuff, makeup and hair products since I use them all when getting ready in the morning. I attend fairly regularly in the morning. I am often greeted with a smile and my ID card is scanned in. I make my way down to the locker room where I change into my gym shoes and then I head out to the cardio area. They have so many treadmills, elipticals, bikes, etc! I basically can pick anything to use when I arrive since it's not too busy at 7 am. However, I usually use the same machines. The people are nice and the workers are friendly. Once my workout is over I shower and get dressed for work. I like the shower area since they have privacy and stalls rather than just curtains. I also like how I have privacy when getting dressed. Once I am all ready for work I pack up my bags, re-organize my locker and I am on my way. The ladies at the desk almost always tell me to "have a nice day" when I am leaving. It's such a nice start to my day! read more

Although this building is relatively new (2009), this facility suffers from frequent system failures. The whirlpool, steam room, and indoor pool are closed for repairs at least once year. In addition, the water pressure for the showers is weak due to low flow shower heads. Trying to shave at one of the locker room sinks is a difficult experience as the faucets all have flow restrictors installed and usually just put out cold water. Finally, I suggest always wearing sandals in the locker room as the floor surface is quite slippery when wet. As for the work out area, always keep any eye open while running on the track. People frequently walk the wrong direction as they ignore the signs and staff never tries to correct the problem. In addition, parents frequently bring strollers on the track which can create obstacles while running. Finally, I recommend NEVER leaving valuables in your locker or car -- use the free lobby kit lockers instead. My wallet was stolen from a padlocked locker in the men's locker room. The YMCA then gave me a new padlock because of my loss. :( read more

Clean , easy to park and has plenty of machines. Never a wait for equipment like those 10 a month places. (Although i go at 530 am so can't say what it's like later) Huge pool/water slides and hot tub which i haven't used. This is my all-time favoritest gym for a few reasons. They have a wide variety of cardio machines--including two row machines and a ladder climber. How cool is that? (Hint: It's really cool.) They also have a large selection of anaerobic machines and free weights. Side note: I recently learned the word "anaerobic" and try to include it as often as I can in casual conversations. Like, "This steak is really tasty and provides a good anaerobic workout for my biceps as I place meaty chunks of meat into my mouth." Or, "Did you see 'Avengers: End Game'? It was quite anaerobic!" Anyway, I also like the diversity of people at this gym. There's white, black, brown, yellow, and red people. Tall people, short people. Well-padded folks, scrawny, ripped. You name it. All getting along and respecting each other. That's pretty sweet. As a bonus, the staff is very friendly. Machines occasionally break down, but not to the extent that some reviewers are suggesting, and they are usually fixed within a few days. But there's such a range of machines that if you can't find something alternative to use, then you're doing it wrong. The only reason I'm knocking off one star is that this gym definitely has a much higher ratio of smelly people than any other gym I've used. My brother is one of the biggest offenders. I mean, I still love him, but damn he stank! Don't run on a treadmill next to him. He smells like he rubbed his body with rancid meat and spoiled eggs. He's 52 years old and runs a 7-minute mile though, so at least he's got that going for him! Okay, that's all. Have a nice day. read more

I'm officially a fan of the brand new pool at the Carondelet Rec Plex! It's been too damn hot to visit up until a few days ago... but now that it's not 99 degrees with 100% humidity, I had to go check it out! First of all, the membership here is CHEAP! As a member of the Rec Plex, the summer pass for the pool was only $50! That's right, only 50 bones. For the entire summer. And you must know that this pool is new. Brand new. State of the art, with a huge water slide, lazy river, misters, etc. Love it! And they also have nice lounge chairs for members to use, as well as umbrellas for us old ladies who can't sit in the sun for a long time. Brought my laptop here on Tuesday afternoon and actually got some work done in the sun. The glare was a little intense, but it was still nicer than being cooped up in the house. Looking forward to going back this afternoon. Bring a towel and some sunscreen and join me! read more

The Carondelet YMCA, as a whole, is a nice facility. The gym is ok, but small. (Machines are sometimes down and out of commission for weeks). The basketball court is very nice, too. It's the most used area in the entire complex. What I'm partial to is the track that sits above the court on the second floor. Great overview of the lowel level and suits all cardio needs. The indoor and outdoor pool settings are great! The kids really enjoy it. Such a great additive for those sweltering, Summer days. But the customer service, though?!!!! Oh, no ma'am. The front desk is atrocious, so is the morale. First of all, why are there so many workers stationed at the front desk, yet none of them are barely paying attention. Furthermore, they all act like they have no clue what they're doing? Listen, I don't understand. Another gripe I have is unruly children running around, swinging off gym equipment. I know part of the problem is the parents not stepping in. HOWEVER, there needs to be more workers, in all areas, enforcing rules about those matters. There's about 50-11 workers at the desk, folding towels...how many YMCA workers does it take to fold linen? Management should really check on that. It doesn't look good walking in and people in YMCA staff t-shirts all clustered together, doing nothing. The complex gives a safe and fun place for kids to fellowship and to stay out the streets. But in the customer service department, some changes need to happen. read more

I'm typically a South City YMCA goer, but I will definitely go a bit out of my way to come to this awesome gym. The facility is very new with tons of amenities, including a pool for swimming (with a designated kids' area), ample circuit training and cardio equipment, an indoor track, and most importantly (for me at least), a stellar roster of group fitness classes. They also offer a lot more weekend group classes than other Y's in the area. The locker room and showers are always clean and there are always clean towels. My one complaint - and I know this is very nit picky - is that the main group fitness classroom doesn't have great mirrors (they're only on the front wall and there's a big ballet bar that runs through). But that's just me because I'm particular about monitoring my form. If you're looking to try some classes out, the instructors for Body Pump (Allison) and PiYo (Steph) are really friendly and helpful! Just be sure to come early to set up for classes - they fill up quickly! read more

This review is for the pool only at the YMCA Carondelet Park Rec Plex... like Abby S, I'm a huge fan! My sis and I brought her two young children here for a reprieve from the blistering heat. There's plenty of lounge chairs if you wish to soak up the sun (some shaded by umbrellas), as well as a brand-new, modern pool with all the stops: a water slide, lazy river and even a fun area with various misters for the kiddies to run through. There's a concession stand with soft drinks and light snacks, but I also noticed a few people set up shop at patio tables with what appeared to be BYO lunches. My only gripe: my sister has a family pass but for me to come in as a guest, I had to pay $10. That's somewhat hefty for a St. Louis city pool in my opinion! But, it is rather difficult to get pool privileges in the city vs. the county so maybe the price is fair if you factor in supply and demand. Still, it's a beautiful pool and I know I'll return with my family. read more

I really love this YMCA. The location is off the beaten path but can be seen from highway 55. We stop by at least two times per week to get our treadmill on. I can't say that I have ever been in, when there wasn't an elliptical/ cross trainer free to use. Everything is clean for the volume of traffic, especially the restrooms. My only complaint in that area is the towel situation. Bring your own towel. They dump so much bleach in the laundry that upon wiping sweat off of my face, I immediately broke out into hives and began itching uncontrollably. YIKES. Child care is convenient and free. I love the ladies that work in the toddler room. They are super funny and sweet. Classes are inexpensive or FREE. Our daughter is in the Little Fishes swimming class and she had really improved in the past few weeks. She also stops by the gym afterwards for free playtime in which they pull out some gymnastics stuff and let the little ones bounce around. So cute. I can't wait for summer so we can check out the outdoor pool. The indoor pool is nice but generally crowded. The pool nazis are always in full force to make sure you don't use any of their noodles (unless you are in the swim class). There is a fun whirl pool, a lazy river and a hot tub big enough to fit 30 sweaty senior citizens. read more

I hate to do this but......now that some time has past and I have spent more time here, I have to delete a star or two. I enjoy working out but often something or other is broken or not working for some reason. Often the hot tub is closed or the steam room is not in use. Really makes me mad that things like that will be broke down for weeks. I liked the swimming class but the instructor is a social butterfly and talks WAY to much, so you end up standing there waiting for her to SHUT UP so we can move on. I finally dropped out of the class and will go to the one on Sublet to swim. It's been disappointing, I had such great hope for this place. read more

Great place! I never considered the idea of joining a Y,instead of a gym; it was all the boyfriend's idea. Turns out that the cost is comparable for a couple, especially considering they have a pool and an actual gym, you know, like with basketball hoops. (Also, my boyfriend's daughter gets to go, so that's awesome.) It opens at some God forsaken early hour and is open late enough on weekdays, but I am sad that it closes at 6 on the weekends. While there are definitely busy times, I've never seen all of the cardio machines be in use at once. They have tons of free adult exercise classes at a range of times. The pool area also has a sauna and a steam room for anyone who can tolerate/likes that amount of heat. There is a family locker room for anyone who brings a child of the opposite gender. The staff are nice and helpful. At the front desk, you can also leave keys/an ID/etc. to borrow a basketball or a lock for a locker. They also have the clean towels, no valuables required. I could go on and on about why I love this place, but I'll just give you the headlines (ie why you should care) It's brand-spankin' new. Everything's still shiny and clean, and when things are broken (it's a gym; machines break. Even new ones.) they fix 'em. Maybe that's a normal thing, and I've just gone to cruddy gyms in the past (probably. cheap often = cruddy) but wow. Flat-screen TVs in the cardio area, PLUS TVs on all the machines. Sweet! Oh, and though I haven't used it, the pool's pretty darn swanky. Even waterslides and a lazy river for the kiddos. It's a shame there aren't more laps for swimming, though. DH sometimes has to split a lane if he goes during peak hours (and the lanes sometimes are occupied by various classes.) It's relatively inexpensive. While I wish they had a "couples" price, since the hubs and I pay the same price as we would if we had a handful of kids, it's still a good deal. A good amount of the classes are included. WIsh the outside pool was included (it's not open yet; they're still working on it) but we'll see how that shakes out. Seems like it's going to be a pricey add-on, and I wonder if the price will get lowered for members. It's plenty big. Even when it's crowded, there's plenty of available machines. I wish there were more small-weight freeweights (Since, really, who's lifting those super-giant ones anyway?) but even that's not a hugely big deal. The track gets crowded at times, though, so you sometimes have to navigate your way around the crowds of walkers if you're running. No biggie (but wish they'd enforce the walk in the red lane, run in the gray lane rule a bit more) The people who work there are nice, welcoming and helpful. It's a Y, so no pushy sales people. No contracts. I see all kinds of people there. Young, old, fit, not-so-fit... Parents working out with their kids, people clearly training for races on the track when the weather's lousy... older folks chatting it up in the pool. And people who are seriously working out. It's this neat cross between a completely legit gym and a community center. I love it. read more

I have been going to this Y ever since it opened up and I love it. The friendly staff make it feel like it is so much more than a Y, it is a community. I like how there is always something going on at this Y. You can workout in the exercise area, take an exercise class lead by awesome instructors, go to the indoor pool (or outdoor during the summer), or play some games in the gym! My favorite part about this Y is child care, specifically camp. The lengths that the staff go through to make sure the children have a safe and fun summer is truly amazing. The YMCA at Carondelet Park is a great gym. A recent renovation that was completed in November really steps up the amenities. The gym consists of a large cardio room (tread mills, elipticals, stationary bikes, etc), free weights, basketball/volleyball courts exercise/dance room, and two pools (1 indoor and 1 outdoor). The cardio room has plenty of machines. I have never had to wait for a machine. The indoor pool has 3 lap lanes, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi. There is also a giant waterslide for the kids that is open at certain times. The outdoor pool requires an additional membership. Rates are very reasonable $46/mo. You can save money if you sign up as a family which is about $65/mo. Rates are different if you are not a city resident. Check to see if you get a discount from your employer. By far the best part of the gym is the staff. They are super friendly. There are no employees who sit there with disapproving looks if your BMI is over 2%. They are always wonderfully helpful. I also like the fact that the YMCA has a stated mission to help the community. Profits are reinvested back into the community, not into some dude's pockets. If you are a St Louis resident you should at least check it out. read more

This facility is amazing. The whole area is kept quite clean, indoors and out. The range of services offered from childcare to water aerobics (and everything in between) is extensive. The staff is very attentive and really watching out for your safety. Recently, I began to feel a migraine coming on quickly as I sat in the pool and a staff member came over to me because she saw me rubbing my forehead. She offered me water and a snack to help me feel better. You are safe there and you will have a lot of fun! read more

This post is about the pool. I'm so excited to have a pool pass for the first time in 10 years! I went today and had a blast with my friends who were not members but ok with paying $10 to get in. We hit up the waterside at least 6 times, lapped the lazy river dozen times, raced in the lap pool, chilled in the beach pool, and ate some snacks! It was a great time. The only downside is that the pool only gets to be 3 feet deep (except for the lap pool which is 12 ft) . None of us were really bothered with it though, we still had a blast. Another odd rule is that there are not inflatables allowed. Not sure why but many guests had noodles with them....although I didn't see a noodle in the pool...hmmm. The other thing that bugged me just a little was that I was expecting to see healthier snacks at the snack bar for 2 reasons. 1. It's a YMCA and they are all about being healthy and 2. the company that sells the snacks, Urban Eats, is all about healthy. They did have a salad and fruit offerings as well as a smoothie. Besides that there were the usual pool snacks: nachos, pizza, pretzels, candy bars, ice cream, and soda. All in all, I had a great time and plan to utilize my pool time this summer! read more

Very large gym with lots of good equipment and machines, but they are always broken! That would be fine since there are usually multiple other machines to use instead, but those aren't working either. I normally have to try about 3 or 4 treadmills before I can find one that is working properly. Needless to say, that is very frustrating especially bc you let the staff know about the issue, but the equipment is rarely, if ever, repaired. Also, they have a nice pool area, but that is unfortunately closed for weeks at a time and the other features in the pool area are also unavailable, such as the steam room and sauna yet there is no discount on the expensive monthly membership bill. Lastly, they close at 6 on the weekends which is very early and inconvenient if you have to work weekend days like I do. read more

Love. Love. Love this gym. Every time I enter or leave I'm greeted with a friendly hello. I guess when gym-goers scan they're membership card as they walk in the Y has all this information that pops up because I went in after work on my b-day and got a happy birthday greeting from the woman working the front desk. I like those little niceties. Not only is the staff super friendly but the gym is really nice, new and clean too. Nearly all the aerobic machines have tv screens attached to them so I can watch my favorite guilty pleasure shows like Jerseylicious or Bad Girls while I work out. I feel like if I'm working out I deserve to watch some trash tv too. The weight area is really well equipped as well with new machines and free weights that will help you sculpt and tone. If the machines are overwhelming and you don't know what you're doing the staff is more than willing to teach you how to use them. The number of classes they have can be overwhelming, but it's great that they have so many options. I've taken a few aerobic ones and my favorite so far is Zumba with Jeli. She makes it so fun! She also makes it look super easy. My only complaint is that it's becoming too popular and the class size is getting a little out of hand. They also offer classes that will help you in your daily lives. I took a women's self defense class with Joel and after only 3 intense sessions the class is complete and I feel so much better prepared to defend myself if I had to. My hope is that they offer more classes like this. They have a nice pool area as well. The inside pool is part of the Y membership, but unfortunately the outside pool is an additional fee. It's great for the kiddies though and laying out. If you're looking for a large gym where the staff is friendly this is the place to go. read more

This is a well appointed and reasonably new gym. However, the clientele there have no idea of etiquette. People are talking loudly on cell phones, and some people will hang out on a particular machine for over 30 minutes, and act hostile when you politely ask them for a turn. There was a brawl in here a few weeks ago. The policeman stood there while the Y employees restrained the people in the brawl. It was only 15 feet away from where I was working out on the treadmill. I checked the St Louis police crime map, and found many thefts from cars and lockers here, as well as other crimes. I've switched to a new gym. read more
