It also appeared that employees working the floor were avoiding helping with paperwork. Several staff members would go into the back room whenever customers needed assistance instead of helping. I eventually called the store and asked to speak with a manager, but instead of connecting me, the employee asked why I needed to speak with one and never actually put me through to a manager. After waiting nearly an hour without receiving any help, I ended up leaving. This was a very frustrating and unprofessional experience. I hope management or ownership at Blackstone Shooting Sports looks into what happened that evening, because customers should not be left waiting this long without assistance. If someone from management or ownership would like to follow up about this experience, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Price point was extremely fair. Good value! I'm looking forward to my next visit. Seems to be a well run partnership at first glance. Suggestion: prior to visiting, head to the website, watch the orientation video, and complete the online waiver. They'll have it waiting for you to sign at the office. The office is your first stop, where you'll sign the waiver (after watching the video, if you didn't already watch it online) and pay your fees. A single fee gives you all day access via wristband, and just a couple dollars more pays for the target stands you'll be using. One free target comes with the fees. Staplers and staples are provided free at each range. Office staff can answer your initial questions and get you in-processed quickly, then let the range officers know you're coming their way. Suggestion 2: weapons brought into the complex must be cased and unloaded. Do this before you arrive, and everything will go smoothly. Range officers are helpful, friendly, and not drill sergeants. Listen to them, follow their instructions, and enjoy the day. They've all got different personalities, of course; the Range 2 guys were pretty lackadaisical, while I appreciated the efficiency of the Range 3 crew. The facilities I saw were all clean and well equipped. Nothing fancy, mind you, but still far nicer than most of the public ranges I've seen. It's a shame there aren't more facilities of this caliber dispersed around the state. I certainly wish there were one closer to where I live. But going here was worth the drive. And for those of us who are veterans, there are discounts for visiting on weekdays. Maybe I can take advantage of that some time soon.

It's UNSAFE! I visited this range today. I was assigned to range B lane 3. The shooter to my left…read morein lane 2 was firing a 9mm semi. His ejected casings were raining down onto me. I looked over my shoulder through the observation window to see if a range master was watching. They were not. So I went outside and told one what was going on. While standing outside the range with the range master we both could see 9mm casings were raining on my gear in lane 3. So he went onto the range and asked the shooter to STEP BACK in the lane to make sure his ejected casings were stopped by the fixed wall (rather than going over the top of small/short an extended unfixed hinged barrier). I re-entered the range and probably fired off about 50-60 rounds of the 500-1000 rounds I planned. Then a new shooter shows up in lane 2. He's firing .45 semi. Now I have .45 casings raining down on me. These things are hot enough to burn your skin! I looked back through the barrier glass. This time the same range master was watching. We made eye contact. He saw what was happening as I motioned toward the shooter in lane 2. He just shrugged his shoulders. That's what he did. I have red hot casings landing on my position, and this range master just shrugs his shoulders! I immediately packed my gear and GOT OUT. That range is UNSAFE for 3 reasons. One, a shooter in the forward firing position is where he should be. When the first shooter was asked to STEP BACK in the lane to fire, I was uncomfortable with this. I'd rather have a hot casing land on me than have a negligent discharge find my backside! Second, when leaving I expressed that the movable barriers forward of the fixed walls are inadequate to protect other shooters from ejected casings, his response was to say, "It's always been that way." UNBELIEVABLE!!! Thirdly, the fact that it's always been that way tells me safety is not a priority for this range. To be transparent, when I was firing I started with .357, then a few .380. The same range master approached and asked that I not rapid fire from the hip. You should always obey a range master, so there was no push back or complaint from me. Just compliance. But I was not actually firing from the hip. I was firing 3 shot bursts from a forward retention position, not from my hip. But no matter, the range master instructed that I not do what I was doing so no problem; I stopped. Immediately and with no complaint. I fired the rest of my .380 from the same retention position at 2 second intervals. Then I loaded up 9.mm to begin firing again. That's when the .45 casings started raining down on me from lane 2 again. Shooters should know this is how that range is ran. I did speak with the on-premise manager before I left so he could know what was going on. He apologized. But no one and nothing suggested to me anything would change at this gun range. I've sent millions of rounds down range. I've never experienced this sort of nonsense at a range. It's UNSAFE. For novice shooters lacking experience you may not be aware how hot fired shell casings are as they eject. If one of them lands between your safety glasses and face, it's going to burn you! The last thing you want to have happen is you to have a hot casing burning your face when you're in an up and ready firing position in process of squeezing off a round. That's when bad things happen.

In my years I have experienced different instructors, but none have shown the perfect balance of comfort, hands on training experience and knowledge presented in such a manner that is relaxing, stress free and to top it off... the ability to build confidence. Jim has a natural ability to place a student at ease, to answer any questions even if they seem simple, encourages discussion and provides education in a manner anyone can understand and relate to. In addition, the method he teaches seems personal and more attentive rather than a large class which seems impersonal and crowded. This allows the student to feel more relaxed and able to soak in the knowledge being presented. A portion of his class was in his classroom which was filled with educational material and material that we could inspect and learn from. He provided lunch then transportation to finish the second part of the class which was held on a private range which was quiet and private. The range portion was just as excellent as it provided an area where we could qualify without the distractions and onlookers a public range would have negatively provided. If you are looking for training whether a beginner, refresher or to gain your certificate this is the best place to choose and I wholeheartedly recommend Jim at Stars & Stripes!

Scouts require that these two merit badge counselors be NRA certificated instructors in Shotgun and Rifle. I found Jim Elliott and it was a great find. Jim teaches a raft of NRA programs which include pistols, rifles, shotguns, reloading, range safety and other programs, like home defense. Just what I was looking for. The initial shotgun course was in his basement home in Tega Cay. Absolutely one of the best small classroom operations I have experienced. Worth a tour. He has great displays of ammunition, guns, training aids and actual guns. You just don't talk about things, you actually can touch them. A very fine set-up. Jim is a super instructor. Emphasis is on safety and applying what you learn to actual operation. You take weapons apart, compare ammunition, watch videos and, ultimately, as part of the training, go to a range and fire the guns. It was a very full day, which included a simple lunch and he drove us to and from the range. A very nice, sincere guy. I am very appreciative of his approach-ability and willingness to teach. I will most likely take other courses that he offers. If you need any type of fire arm training, give him a call. At a minimum he can recommend others, like him, that really care about what they are teaching.
