Island Grillers and Catering - Jerk Chicken

Island Grillers and Catering

There was a steady number of people getting food from Island Grillers, and I was excited to try it out. #20 Jerk Chicken ($19.50) - The Jerk Chicken takes around 30 minutes after ordering to come out. It seems to be cooked fresh as it was steaming when we picked up the box. The chicken itself, consisting of a leg quarter, is super tender and falls off the bone easily. There are some crispy bits from the chicken being charred on the grill and the fat/skin is rendered well. The char is quite good - I normally don't eat the cartilage on the end of the drumstick, but here, it's nicely charred and chewy, a nice departure from the tenderness of the meat. The jerk seasoning/sauce applied is a bit on the sweet side, almost like a tomatoey sweet BBQ sauce. There's just the barest hint of scotch bonnet heat - to be honest, if you didn't tell me this was jerk chicken, I might not have been able to guess it. Still, the chicken is quite delicious even if it's not the most "jerk". On the side, we got a salad, red beans & rice, and a dinner roll. The salad is simple, but with plenty of halved grape tomatoes, diced bell peppers, cucumber, and romaine lettuce dressed in a very sweet red dressing. Both the rice and red beans are cooked a bit on the hard side and give a nice bite in contrast to the tender chicken. Be careful eating - they cook the herbs/spices inside, so you can find full allspice berries and stems of thyme mixed throughout. The dinner roll is quite interesting. It's a commercial roll, but it's covered with butter and spices and then grilled, giving the exterior somewhat of a crust and a nice flavor. It comes sliced in half, and it's perfect for mopping up the dregs of jerk sauce after finishing the chicken. Note: Island Grillers charges an 8.5% fee for credit card transactions, which is the highest I have ever seen. If you go inside the bar building up the stairs there's a station where you can get complimentary sparkling or still water. The bathrooms are also in that area, two larger rooms per gender. Overall I enjoyed the food at Island Grillers and I can definitely recommend this food truck if you stop by The Back Lot.
