But my partner has been RAVING about this spot for so long, we finally got a chance to grab hot dogs (to go) while also buying some to grill, and some other meats to smoke for the house. I think they're all pork based, so if you're not a pork hot dog person, this isn't the spot for you, but they're delicious. They have a small little parking lot, and they're extremely efficient. You order everything at the counter, and if you want hot dogs to go for an affordable lunch, this is the spot! They even have some cute t-shirts, hats and other cute merch. I grew up in Michigan, but now live in Los Angeles. Ever since I discovered Plath's bacon several years ago, while on vacation in Michigan, I have frozen and brought major quantities of both their bacon and their cheese dogs home to California with me. Recently, I made my husband and college age nephew do a blind taste test to compare the Plath's bacon to a well-known California bacon from Mahogany Meats, in Bishop, CA. The price of the CA bacon was literally DOUBLE Plath's price, and when I commented on this to their sales person she replied something along the lines of "quality costs." Well, when my husband and nephew tasted the two bacons -- without knowing which was which -- each immediately chose the bacon from Plath's as far superior to Mahogany Meats! And the better bacon cost half as much. Truly a win-win situation! read more

Wonderful, local butcher shop with great sausage, brats, hot dogs, other meats, and a nice but small selection of made in michigan food items (mustards, maple syrups, chips, spices, etc). We got the smoked polish sausage at the recommendation of one of the employees which was my favorite. We also tried the regular brats and smoked buffalo and pork sausage (also delish). So I am a strict vegetarian. Well, maybe not strict. Walked into this place very near closing time. I ordered the way any vegetarian would. "Ah, yeah, give me a hot dog without the dog and all the condiments." Basically a bun, onion, mustard, relish... I am smelling the smoke flavor and eyeing all the meat in the front case. So I plead with the guy ... "Do you have just one hot dog left?" No, he says all gone. I do not shut up. This other guy comes out and I plead with him... He says they actually do have just ONE more hot dog in the back. "Well I need it (I begged like a junky)." He offered me the last sausage but that was going a little too far. So no on that. I got the hot dog and threw all that stuff on it and then I said "But there's an empty warmer over there with special homemade coney sauce missing; so where is that .... I think I need that too?" He then goes back and gets me that special chilli sauce (to die for, yes meaty). I chowed down on a maple honey beef jerky stick while I waited for the hot dog. Whaat? There's some seeds in that! Absolutely love this place! Okay, they make hot dogs that will literally change your life (or they should)! Whether you grill them, fry them or pan fry them in a little butter (our preferred), the dogs are absolutely perfect! The smoked pork chops are out of this world! Just shake a little pepper and garlic and grill (or once again pan fry with butter) enough to warm them up, and i promise you'll love them! They also have great steaks, cheeses (habanero cheddar is stupid hot but one of those things i can't quit) snack sticks, breakfast sausages, and pig ears for the 4 legged fans. We had the Plath's Bacon every morning at Stafford's Bay View Inn during our stay. I had to search it out. Who doesn't like bacon for one thing? Turns out this is paramount of smoked meat goodness! Lots of other items in the case but I didn't have much room and I had to buy a mini cooler and ice for trip home! Worth it. Mmm...pork. Smoked pork. From their house-cured bacon to their smoked pork chops to their Canadian bacon, this place is a mecca for all things smoked. Now, I'm a fan of their pork products (can't you tell?), but they also do smoked beef jerky, smoked poultry and smoked fish. My 5-year-old nephew's a big fan of their hot dogs, and if a 5-year-old doesn't know his hot dogs, then who does? Each time I'm up in Petoskey, Plath's is one of my first stops. (This from a girl who lives in the Big City and is normally happy buying all of my meat at a Big Grocery Chain.) And each Christmas I look forward to the box of Plath's meats my Dad ships to me. Plath's is fantastic! Now if only I can persuade them to open a Chicago location. read more

If you are looking to have your freshly caught fish smoked, Plath's is the place for you. We recently caught seven Lake Trout on an expedition out on Lake Michigan. Our amazing charter (Ward Brothers) took care of cleaning and filleting the fish. We took them to Plath's and they took it from there! They smoked the fish and shipped them to us, carefully packed in ice, in a sturdy cooler (which they provided). Each fillet was individually smoked and vacuum sealed, so we could choose how much to freeze. This smoked fish is the best we've ever tasted! We highly recommend Plath's! read more

We got burgers, hotdogs, and brats for my daughter's graduation party and all I can say is that they were amazing. The burgers were perfect, the hotdogs were some of the best I've had in my life, and we got the mango habenero brats and they were so good I'm craving one right now. Mostly, Plath's is just a normal meat market with a case full of all kinds of smoked goodness, but you can also just walk in and get a wonderful hotdot for like $2. HIGHLY recommended. read more
