I stopped in this "Old Neighborhood" and village market on Wednesday October 23rd while in route to…read morea few wineries for some pretzels and Chex mix. What a nice, clean and organized store with pleasant "local" employees working. I noticed while looking for the snack isle that everyone knows someone in here (except me lol). It does not totally compare in size to my local Kroger or Meijer, yet Ken's Village Market is sufficient enough to satisfy customers looking for many foods, cereals, bakery, deli and other items on a weekly or weekend shopping basis. While power walking to shop I noticed a nice deli, bakery and weekly sale items in the main area. A familiar brand from my Value Center store back home that was sold which caught my eye. The old name "Spartan" Brand which is now called "Our Family" was displayed in the center area with canned fruit and vegetables on sale. ( see photo). Too bad I wasn't shopping with a list to grab a dozen. I saw a pharmacy counter for the local residents which is necessity here in this town. I also saw a shopper in a electric scooter so that is helpful for the handicap. I found the snack isle with many well known name brands as well as "Family= Spartan." My favorite "Snyder Pretzels" was on sale 2/$4.00 so I grabbed 2 different styles: Rods and Mini and also one regular bag (Blue) of Chex Mix. The liquor or booze shelves are directly across from the snacks, so how convenient and perfect is that idea for all party and munchie animals. :) When checking out, this store has a "U-Scan" area so I was paying without waiting in line. My snack shopping experience was successfully completed in a total of 15 minutes. Ken's Village Market is a bookmark when in this small town. Their store hours are: Monday thru Saturday 8 am to 9 pm and also Sundays 10 am to 5 pm. P.S. When exiting the parking lot I saw a resident shopper saving gas by riding his unicycle to this store. I hope he shops for 3 items or less ?? To keep balanced :)

The best store around. Anything you might need is in this store. The Bakery is the best.read more

When purchasing groceries in Boyne City there are a few options but we love perusing this natural…read morestore as we always find amazing yummy items that we can eat without guilt! They have produce, frozen, refrigerated and canned items that will make any meal a delight. We can find alternative milks and butter, gluten free pastas that are the best kind and all for a pretty reasonable price. There are a few discounts if you belong to a co-op (anywhere in the world we were told), but honestly for what you get it's not too costly in comparison. We love their brown rice gluten free pasta and sauces which can be an easy dinner while on vacation, or we can splurge with some dairy free ice cream or gelato. Yum! If you haven't been in but want to try out something good for you that is also delicious we recommend this store!

Don't get me wrong, I love the Grain Train, and I go there just about daily now, but you cannot…read morecompare it to the warehouse grocery store. With that said, I personally love the Grain Train due to how close it is to where I am staying, how I can easily find local produce and products there (which I fully support), and the friendly staff. There is a small corner where you can get bulk items such as oatmeal, nuts, popcorn, etc. if that's more your speed. They also keep a small fridge in the back for a selection of pre-made cold meals and sides. Again, due to its small size, it is pretty limited on what it offers, but it covers a basic grocery haul. Also, items are typically listed at a higher premium than a standard grocery store because of the local and organic quality of its products. I would recommend dropping by if only to look around and see what's available if you want to shop locally.

My friends and I ended up at Topinabee Market and Deli on our way back to Grand Rapids from…read moreDrummond Island in search of gas and restrooms. I walked in to the market and looked around for a restroom - didn't see one anywhere. I noticed that the space was pretty small and a bit cramped and there was a door propped open that led to what looked like a storage space - luckily I didn't end up in there accidentally. Finally eventually someone working there said that the restrooms were across the street. Got it! Headed across the street to what looked like a state park type free-standing restroom facility. It was fairly clean which was nice! However there was no soap in the dispenser and I couldn't get the automatic faucet to give up any water. Well, I guess that's what hand sanitizer is for, right? Yikes. I did a quick glance around at the liquor options behind the counter, because I wanted to see if I could pick up a local whisky we had tried while on Drummond Island. I didn't see any and the guy behind the counter didn't ask if I had any questions or if I was looking for anything in particular so that was a bit awkward. They only had your typical big name bottles, nothing at all that looked local. Not a big deal but I also didn't feel super welcomed there. There was a nice little walking path and grassy area for my friends' dogs to roam, as well as a really nice view of Mullett Lake! We saw a person hanging out there with their dog just enjoying the views. It made for a pleasant outdoor experience even if the indoor experience wasn't 5 stars. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get to this spot again, as it was pretty far off the highway.
