This was my first cruise, so I don't have much to judge it against, however, the fact that I got engaged onboard, I think, makes it worthy of a 5 star review.
My boyfriend of three years and I decided just two weeks before to go on a cruise for Valentine's Day and the anniversary of our first date. So we booked a 7 day cruise to the western Caribbean - our ports included: Cozumel, Honduras' island Roatan, Belize and Costa Maya.
We flew down on a Saturday morning, boarded that afternoon and the eating began and didn't really end until we got off the cruise the following Saturday. The Carnival Glory had more food and entertainment options than I could have imagined. And its sheer size was astonishing.
Let me recount the ways: Guy Fieri burger bar, taco and burrito bar, two different buffets, two different sit down restaurants, a steakhouse, four separate bars, a pizza place, a fish and chips shop, a deli and several 24-hour froyo machines. Oh, plus room service at anytime of the day or night.
While I won't lie and say it's the best food I've ever had, for the amount of food that the ship had to prepare for everyone, they certainly did quite well. I ended up thinking the upcharge for the steakhouse (we did that our first night) was a little much, but since everything else was included in the price (minus alcohol and sodas - those were extra) it was pretty darn good. Plus, the amount of options you had for every meal was impressive as well. My qualm was on days when we got off the boat to do excursions, sometimes we didn't return until after the normal lunch options had closed, so were limited in our choices then.
And then there's the entertainment options. Without having ever gotten off the ship, we could have been busy with something every hour of the day. There was a large casino, two theaters, a comedy lounge, a piano bar, a kid's club, an adults' only pool, a night club, a preteen club, a video game arcade, a spa, a workout room, hot tubs, an adults' only section of deck chairs, not to mention all the impromptu happenings scheduled every day. It was really remarkable.
Not really knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the size our room on the 8th floor with its little balcony. Whoever designed those rooms did a bang up job of utilizing every square inch of space available. While you couldn't open the bathroom door and one of the closets simultaneously, how often do you really need to do that?
And I have to say, that never in my life, have I had customer service as good as what I experienced on the Carnival Glory. Every staff member from our room steward (who made the best towel animals every night), to our cruise entertainment director Dr. E, to the guy who made the burritos couldn't have been nicer. Plus, you can be a total slob on the cruise and it's kosher - there's always someone coming around to pick up left over cups, plates, whatever. It felt weird at first, but got really easy really quickly.
My boyfriend and I decided to do shore excursions two of the four days we were in port and saved those for Honduras and Belize. We went ziplining in Gumbalimba Park in Honduras and snorkeling off of a little island Carnival bought in Belize, and both excursions were awesome! I had the best time, and even when we just went wandering in the Mexican ports it was interesting. I would highly recommend doing a few exciting ones.
One of the best things about the cruise was the fact that there wasn't much to do beyond eating, sleeping, sunning and lounging. Also, since we didn't bother to pay the hideous cost of internet on the boat, we even got to have a digital detox. But now for what you really want to hear: my engagement story.
So here's how we got engaged. It was our first full day on the boat and it was one of the "cruise elegant" evenings, which meant get dressed up and go to a fancy-schmancy dinner and take pictures, etc. We did so and had a lovely dinner then after, we went on to the deck to enjoy the night. We walked over to the adult section, which was crowded during the day, but deserted that evening and climbed into one of the big double hammocks to look at the stars. I said to my boyfriend, "Did you ever imagine three years after our first date we'd be on a cruise together?" and instead of answering he pulled the engagement ring out of his pocket and I began crying when I realized what it was. Tears of joy of course. As you might imagine, we were both deliriously happy the rest of the trip and really nothing short of a stomach flu outbreak onboard could have ruined it (thankfully that did not happen). But it was perfect.
In a nutshell, I got engaged under the stars off the coast of Cuba on the eve of our third anniversary of our first date. Beat that for an engagement story.
So all in all, this was an awesome first cruise and I would definitely go on another one in the future. read more
