Our friends recommended Carnaval Mexican Grill. We were coming home from the Portland area and were looking to have some dinner on a Sunday. Arriving after 6 pm , place was busy but there were still enough seating for us. Both , my wife and I were tired and very hungry from our 3 hour trip. There aren't many choices for vegetarians but my wife found the Huevos Rancheros. Fried eggs served on a crispy tortilla with refried beans, topped with warm salsa Red or Green. Chopped fresh cilantro, queso fresco, drizzled with sour cream and avocado slices... Her first experience eating the Huevos Rancheros was a good one. Very tasty . Just a little too much salsa. The dish was swimming in it. I had the Carnitas de Puerco. Slow simmered pork, quickly fried at the end. Served with arroz mexicano, refried beans, queso fresco, fresh pico de gallo, guacamole, tortillas a mano. True Mexican Cuisine. This Chef's mother's recipe is a must have... I like the little tortillas where you can put nice bites of carnitas, rice and beans, and guacamole all in one . Very flavorful. The carnitas is moist and extremely tender. First time at this restaurant. We were able to pick our own table as it wasn't that crowded when we arrived. That changed in a few minutes and it became pretty busy. There was only one server who also doubled as the bartender. She was pretty amazing in that she was handling everything and took our orders (there were four of us) without writing anything down. I figured "no way" our orders would come out correct. She proved me wrong, that's for sure. Everything was perfect and exactly as ordered. I had a burrito/enchilada plate and it was fine but not outstanding. I've had better similar orders at other places in the Central Oregon area. Tasty Mexican food! The drink selection had a wide offering lots of mezcal and tequila options of course. I believe they have beer and other spirits as well. My margarita had freshly grilled pineapple that was delicious. I ordered two tacos, one fish and one shrimp. Both were very tasty and flavorful. Small street style tacos. I'm still in disbelief that one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at was in Redmond, Oregon. Coming from Arizona, I am still in denial. The grilled octopus appetizer was the most memorable to us. Our friend, who doesn't even really eat much seafood, ate this and loved it. The knife wasn't even needed because it was prepared so well that even with a fork, you could slice pieces like butter. Heavenly tenderness! I'm not sure if it's always that way, or we were just incredibly lucky that all starts aligned that evening but I still dream about it to this day. My main was the Chile de Gulfo. It's an open face poblano pepper stuffed with king crab and shrimp that's sautéed with onions and tomatoes and blanketed in a creamy chipotle sauce and sour cream drizzles. There was also rice and black beans but they were hidden under the pepper and chipotle cream sauce blanket. The cocktails are something they're known for since they house a diverse variety of Mexican liquors. We enjoyed some of their cocktails as we discussed our awesome day climbing at Smith Rock that weekend and this was our last meal in the area. What a perfect way to finish the adventure off! We decided to give Carnaval a try after landing in Redmond on a trip to visit family over Labor Day weekend. We had a group of 7 so there was a little bit of a wait because they were BUSY. The restaurant inside was packed full. It was really warm inside and quite noisy. We started with the Chicharrón's. When they came out the were still crackling and the hot sauce was tangy and a delicious addition. My husband and I shared the fish tacos and the carnitas plate. The tacos were fresh and super tasty. They had a real crunch from the cabbage, and the sauce added a Smokey spice to them as well. The carnitas was so savory. Perfect amount of salt to accentuate the actual pork flavor. We are so glad this place was suggested to us. We will definitely have to come back next time we are in town. read more

2.5* Ive been here once last year and decided to finally write a review. I found the menu to have quite a few options but prices are a bit steep for what you get. What we ordered: -fried calamari: decently made but came with so little, it was probably $1.50 per piece of cut calamari.. -seafood stuffed pepper: i ordered this at their sister(?) Restaurant in Redmond where it was delicious. Here, the sauce straight up tasted like plain cream .. unappetizing. -my son had the alambres w carnitas where the bacon resembled bacon bits almost. I thought the dish didnt meld as well together as other places where weve ordered it. Carnitas itself was tasty though. -my husband ordered a breakfast dish which he said was good. Overall, i wouldnt return. We had leftovers to bring back and my husband asked for more tortillas to bring back and we were charged for those.. i understand theyre homemade tortillas but when all entrees are pretty much $22+, i think asking for more tortillas shouldnt be included. Service was great. Music was louder than you'd expect because it was not "family appropriate" as lyrics go. The food wasn't good enough for me to return. Refried beans were runny and mostly tasteless. Rice was bland. Taco shell was grilled to a nice crisp but the chicken inside was just a chunk of white meat, not seasoned or simmered. Same for the enchilada filling. The verde sauce did nothing to help it. I wanted to like it after reading the reviews but my husband and I just didn't think it was good. read more

I was expecting traditional Mexican food, but the menu was a pleasant surprise! My husband ordered the carnitas and they were cooked perfectly. I ordered the prawns in crema de chipotle. Incredible! I couldn't believe how delicious it was. It was happy hour, so we ordered blood orange margaritas. OMG! Best margarita EVER! In town with my family all the way from Wilsonville and so so happy to have stumbled upon this gem. The service, atmosphere and most importantly, the food was phenomenal. We went after a spectacular Carnival show, Paranormal Circus. We wanted to keep in theme for the night and my lady suggested this Mexican food restaurant. The place was very busy on a Sunday night but the nice hostess sat us right away! Our server was great, she was very busy but checked in on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed and enjoying our selections.. My passionfruit margarita was so good and I love that I got the rest of the cocktail in the shaker. Very well garnished and not super sweet- 10stars! Tableside guac & salsas were a great touch. The gentleman was interactive chatting with us as he created the guacamole. He was pretty funny. The green salsa was my favorite.. Vegan beans & rice were flavored well and hot when they hit the table, the sauteed veggies were asparagus, zucchini, and carrots sauteed al dente. They were good but needed a bit more seasoning.. This place is fantastic. We were a party of four and ordered the chips and guac to start. We ordered shrimp tacos, cheeseburger, the steak alhambres and the pork chop. You can see we ordered a variety of food. My pork chop was cooked perfectly and was seasoned with a mild garlic flavor. It was delish. The steak alhambres was the best I have had any where. The meat was flavorful and cooked with tons of sauteed veggies and a plentiful amount of cheese. The shrimp tacos were flavored and cooked properly, not under or overcooked. My only gripe is that the menu is misleading in that one side indicates part of the menu as "small bites" and then other parts state various different things in Spanish. Turns out, the entire one side is just starters, and the main dishes are on the other side. This was not clearly stated on the menu, but the staff did point this out. I would suggest the menu be clearer. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this place. Very busy and popular. The dining area was of moderate size and can get very crowded. Had a girls day in Redmond, Oregon today. Stopped in for lunch and margarita's! We had the poblano Chile stuffed with King Crab and extra large shrimp topped with a chipotle cream sauce. Chili Rellenos is our favorite to eat when in a Mexican restaurant and this one hands down was the best!! A blood orange margarita and a regular margarita were the best we ever had! Went to Carnaval for the first time this weekend. I had heard from a foodie friend that it was really good and they did not disappoint! Wow! The menu was so interesting that we decided to eat family style so we could try more things. We decided to try the Carnaval Mar y Tierra Salad - so refreshing and good, two each of the chicken, halibut and shrimp tacos - all delicious! We also shared the Cecilia Adobada- great. They bring little white tortillas to the table when you sit down along with a lovely red sauce. Such a nice touch. The service was like great hospitality. The server knew the menu extremely well, so much so that I guessed it was the owner. Turns out it was! She was lovely and right there when you wanted anything! We all had margaritas which were great too. They have an extensive list of drinks. Definitely will go back when I return to Redmond in a few weeks. read more
